The secret method of reading fortune year by year through the moving lines of the I Ching, drawing on the He Tu and the Luo Shu.
He-Luo Numerology 河洛理數 is a classical forecasting discipline that joins two ancient diagrams, the the He Tu Diagram 河圖 and the Luo Shu Square 洛書 with the hexagram system of I Ching. From a person's day, hour, month and year of birth, He-Luo casts an Early Heaven hexagram (the natal hexagram) and a Later Heaven hexagram (the operative hexagram), then derives the moving line corresponding to each year of a life.
Each line of the hexagram corresponds to a specific span of time, which is why He-Luo is known for its ability to name the exact year in which a great event will fall: the year of marriage, the year of advancement, the year of hardship, the year of change. This is a strength in which Purple Star Astrology and the Four Pillars struggle to match it for precision of timing.
In Master Ung Khiem's transmission, He-Luo is treated as the final layer of verification: a Purple Star chart shows the nature of a person, the Four Pillars show the rise and fall of the Five Phases, and He-Luo states plainly which year brings which event. Only with all three together is a destiny read in full.
Three reasons why He-Luo has become indispensable to anyone serious about reading destiny.
He-Luo tells you at what age a life turns a major corner: marriage, career, misfortune, standing. This is what Purple Star Astrology and the Four Pillars find hardest to pin down.
Unlike the applied disciplines, He-Luo goes straight to the 64 hexagrams and their moving lines. Studying He-Luo also trains the foundations of I Ching scholarship, the ground for every later discipline.
In reading a chart, He-Luo serves as the layer of verification: if Purple Star signals an event, the Four Pillars confirm the movement of Qi, and He-Luo names the year, then the reading rests on solid ground.
Five modules, from the foundations of I Ching scholarship to reading a destiny in practice. Each module has theory, worked examples, and exercises checked against real charts.
Yin and Yang, the Four Images, the Eight Trigrams and the 64 hexagrams. Reading a hexagram's name, reading its lines, and understanding the upper and lower trigrams. Distinguishing the Early Heaven Eight Trigrams 先天八卦 and from the Later Heaven Eight Trigrams 後天八卦, and grasping what each hexagram means in daily life.
The origin, meaning and use of the The He Tu and the Luo Shu in He-Luo calculation. Generating numbers and completing numbers, the Five Phases by direction, and how a birth date in stems and branches is converted into numbers and drawn out as a hexagram.
The secret method of casting the Early Heaven hexagram (the natal hexagram) and a the Later Heaven hexagram (the operative hexagram) from the hour, day, month and year of birth. Placing the lines, placing the destiny number, and fixing Substance and Function. By the end of this module a student can cast a complete He-Luo chart unaided.
The heart of He-Luo: how the moving lines are divided across the years of a life, and how a moving line is read against the hexagram to name the year in which a great event falls. Distinguishing auspicious, inauspicious, responding and clashed lines. Methods for reading marriage, standing, wealth, illness and misfortune through the lines.
How to fold He-Luo into a proper reading procedure: Purple Star fixes character, the Four Pillars weigh the Qi, He-Luo locks the timing. Students practise on real charts kept by Master Ung Khiem.
On completing the programme, a student can cast a He-Luo chart and read the fortune of each year for themselves, for their family and for clients.
You may begin at Foundation or enrol for both levels together. The Advanced level requires the Foundation level, or a solid existing grounding in the I Ching.
