Purple Star 紫微斗數 Charts for Twins & Multiple Births
In brief: seven things to know about a twin chart
- Two people born in the same double-hour have Purple Star 紫微斗數 charts that match star for star. Purple Star Astrology 紫微斗數 places the Palace of Destiny 命宮 by the month and the hour of birth, places Tử Vi 紫微 by the Configuration and the day of birth, and places the Thái Tuế 太歲 cycle by the branch of the year. Not one step takes the minute, and not one step takes the order of birth.
- The classical texts of Purple Star 紫微斗數 record no method for reading two people born in the same double-hour apart. The classics record only how to recognise that a chart has a twin in it, for example Nhật 日, Nguyệt 月 and Thai 胎 in the same palace.
- Every method now current for separating twins is of a later age, and the schools do not agree. The Thiên Di 遷移 method has 5 independent sources, the Huynh Đệ 兄弟 method has 4, and the Thân Cung 身宮 method has 1.
- Twins of different sexes are the one case the classical method separates of itself. The rule that a Yang male 陽男 and a Yin female 陰女 run forward while a Yin male 陰男 and a Yang female 陽女 run in reverse gives the two children Major Periods 大運 that run in opposite directions.
- When the Tai Ji Point 太極點 is shifted, the whole field of stars stays as it is and only the roles of the 12 palaces change. The stars are not placed again and the Five Phases Configuration 五行局 is not worked out again. The words used in the Chinese sources are 借位 borrowing a position, and 同一張命盤 one and the same chart.
- The term 太極轉移法 does not exist in the Chinese of Purple Star 紫微斗數. The correct terms are 立太極, 太極點, 轉宮, 借盤論六親, and the original use of this technique is to examine the Six Relatives 六親, not to lay out a chart for twins.
- A birth by caesarean weakens every method that ranks elder and younger, because the order of birth is then decided by the surgeon and not by nature.
One word before you press the button
The seven points above have named every difficulty. The gravest are the second and the third: here the ancients left a blank, and each later school has filled it in its own way. Practitioners in the Chinese-speaking world themselves call this 「世紀之謎」, the riddle of the century.
So what does this page do with that blank. It declares no method correct, and it hides none of its own weaknesses. It runs all four methods and sets out the provenance and the grade of evidence of each, so that you may weigh them yourself. Every figure on the page carries a grade mark; hover or tap the mark and you see the source.
Please read it with the eyes of someone seeking to raise a child, and not as a verdict. Where a separation can be made, the page says plainly what makes it. Where none can be made, the page says outright that none can be made, rather than inventing something to fill the space.

Searching the classical texts in the UK MASTER ACADEMY library, we found exactly three sentences, and all three are sentences of recognition, not sentences of separation:

Conclusion at grade ①: all three sentences stop at recognising. Not one goes on to dividing the chart. That is the whole of what the classics have left us on this subject.

Material in circulation asserts that the Zhong Zhou school 中州派 (in the transmission of Lục Bân Triệu 陸斌兆, annotated by Vương Đình Chi 王亭之) standardised a method named 「太極轉移法」 for use with twins. We went and searched, and found no evidence of it whatever. Specifically: we examined the whole table of contents of 《王亭之談斗數》 in five parts, some 150 articles, and not one article discusses 太極點, 立太極, 雙胞胎, or 借盤論六親.
In other words, that name was coined by whoever wrote the material, and is not a name of the craft. The sixth point in the summary at the head of the page named the four correct terms; here we add one place where confusion is very common: the technique of borrowing a palace that truly characterises Zhong Zhou 中州 is 借星安宮, by which a palace with no major star borrows the stars of the palace opposite, which is quite another matter.
The chain «the 2nd takes Huynh Đệ 兄弟, the 3rd takes Phu Thê 夫妻, the 4th takes Tử Tức 子息» is the rule 借盤論六親 of the Flying Star 飛星 school, used to count the order of the native's own siblings of the subject, not a method for twins.
A case of one boy and one girl borrows no palace at all. The classical method separates them of itself, and what it separates does not stop at the direction of the Major Periods 大運: the Minor Periods 小限 differ, the Three Directions 三方 by period differ, the annual Four Transformations 流四化 differ. This is the one place on the whole page that stands at grade ① without borrowing from anyone.
Tested on real data: for one and the same date and hour of birth, changing only the sex, the system returns an identical Five Phases Configuration 五行局, identical stems for all 12 palaces, the same Palace of Destiny 命宮 and the same age at which the periods begin, yet the Major Periods 大運 run in opposite directions.

Ngũ Dần Độn 五寅遁: the stem of a palace follows the stem of the year of birth. Begin at the palace of Dần 寅: Giáp 甲 Kỷ 己 → Bính 丙 · Ất 乙 Canh 庚 → Mậu 戊 · Bính 丙 Tân 辛 → Canh 庚 · Đinh 丁 Nhâm 壬 → Nhâm 壬 · Mậu 戊 Quý 癸 → Giáp 甲. Count forward by the Earthly Branches 地支, and the modulus 12 must be taken at the counting step before the modulus 10, or the palaces of Tý 子 and Sửu 丑 will come out wrong.
The direction of the Major Periods 大運 ①, a Yang male 陽男 and a Yin female 陰女 run forward; a Yin male 陰男 and a Yang female 陽女 run in reverse.
The star field does not change ①. The fifth point in the summary at the head of the page says this in plain words; here is where the evidence is set down. Both of the major schools choose words for the act of borrowing and turning, and no school uses a word for the act of laying out afresh: 借位 · 同一張命盤 · 轉盤, and not 重排. Along with this, the Trường Sinh 長生 cycle is likewise no reset.
If the Nạp Âm 納音 formula is applied again to the stem and branch of the new Palace of Destiny 命宮, a different Configuration comes out. Not one school records recalculating the Configuration when the Tai Ji Point 太極點 is shifted. The page does display that figure so that you may compare it, but marks it ③ and states plainly that it is a mechanical inference.

The calendrical layer alone has one closed loop worth recording: a Gregorian date → converted to lunar by an outside library → given to our system → our system returns a Gregorian date. 20 out of 20 came back exactly to the original date, across the whole 75 years surveyed.

Neither side is wrong. Both use the same lookup table, and differ in the input.

The decisive evidence: among the 20 cases there is exactly one in which the branch of the year coincides with the branch of the Palace of Destiny 命宮, and that is precisely the one case in which the two sides give the same result. Were this an error of calculation, the agreement could not fall exactly upon the one case in which the two inputs are equal.
We have not yet been able to consult the original text in order to judge which school is right, and so the page declares neither side right.

A9 · Arguments against ourselves
1 · Birth by caesarean. When the order of birth is decided by the surgeon and not by nature, every system that ranks elder and younger loses its foundation. This is the strongestobjection, and it strikes at all the methods, our own included. The entry form therefore asks you outright whether the birth was natural or by caesarean.
2 · An inner contradiction in the Huynh Đệ 兄弟 method. By the very rule of 借盤論六親, the Palace of Siblings 兄弟 is already the projection of the Palace of Destiny 命宮 of the mother and of the eldest sister. One palace can hardly be at once the independent destiny of a person living a life of their own and the projection of the mother upon someone else's chart.
3 · The schools will not have one another. The five authors of the Thiên Di 遷移 school set out their method as the only correct one and never once mention that the Huynh Đệ 兄弟 method exists. Practitioners themselves say 「其实真的还说不准」, that in truth nothing can yet be said for certain.
