Also called the Ming Gua 命卦, it is the Bagua 八卦 palace answering to the year of birth and the sex. It sets whether a person belongs to the East Four 東四命 or the West Four 西四命 group, and from that come four good directions and four bad ones.
The root palace worked out from the year of birth, without applying the Beginning of Winter 立冬 boundary. It serves as the base for comparison, keeping the year's own value so that it is easy to look up and compare.
The palace used to consider the years suited for marriage. For a man, count back four palaces from the Cung Phi 命卦; for a woman, take the Cung Phi as it stands. It shows how well two people accord across the East and West groups.

The Cung Phi 命卦 is the palace actually used to read a facing, and it takes the solar term boundary into account. Anyone born between the Beginning of Winter 立冬 and the Beginning of Spring 立春 of the following year has a Cung Phi that moves to the palace of the next year, shown in brackets.
