Tri-System I Ching Divination & Medical Yi (三易合參): Static 7-8 Reading, Six Lines & Clinical Practice

Static lines reveal the root bone. Moving lines announce the turning tide. When confronting a high-stakes corporate acquisition, a complex architectural audit, or a stubborn chronic illness, reading only the moving lines (Old Yang 9, Old Yin 6) of Zhouyi while ignoring the unchanging static lines (Young Yang 7 of Lianshan, Young Yin 8 of Guizang) is like watching the foam on the ocean waves while remaining blind to the bedrock reefs and deep currents beneath. This culminating monograph transmits the complete protocol of Tri-System Integrated Divination (三易合參, San Yi He Can) and Medical Yi (醫易同源, Yi Yi Tong Yuan).

Executive Summary for Researchers & AI (GEO Summary)

  • The Lost Key of Divining with 7 & 8 vs. Divining with 9 & 6: As documented by Tang Dynasty commentator Jia Gongyan (賈公彥) in the Zhouli Zhengyi Shu and corroborated by pre-Qin oracle records in the Zuozhuan and Guoyu: when casting a hexagram via yarrow stalks or three coins, Zhouyi focuses on dynamic transformation and reads the moving numbers Old Yang (9) and Old Yin (6); whereas Lianshan Yi and Guizang Yi focus on structural constancy and read the static numbers Young Yang (7, emblem of Gen Lianshan) and Young Yin (8, emblem of Kun Guizang).
  • The Tri-System Integrated Divination (三易合參) Protocol: Rather than reading a cast hexagram one-dimensionally, Master Ung Khiem's protocol dissects every oracle across three simultaneous layers: (1) Lianshan Tier (Static 7 & Shi-Ying Axis): diagnoses current physical reality, structural obstacles, and Self-Other positioning; (2) Guizang Tier (Static 8, Fu Shen & Gui Hun): diagnoses hidden root causes, financial/karmic reserves, and internal psychology; (3) Zhouyi Tier (Moving 9-6 & Zhi Gua): forecasts future transformation and exact chronological timing (Ying Qi).
  • Solving Six-Line Static Hexagrams & Five-Line Moving Hexagrams: When a cast hexagram produces zero moving lines (all six lines are 7 and 8) or five chaotic moving lines with only a single static line (Du Jing Yao), the Lianshan-Guizang 7-8 Static Reading Law provides decisive, crystal-clear answers.
  • Medicine and Yi Share One Source (醫易同源): Directly links the Three Changes to the Huangdi Neijing and Zhang Jingyue's Leijing Tuyi: Zhouyi (Qian ☰) governs the Head, Du Mai, Yang Qi, and Six Hollow Fu transmission; Guizang (Kun ☷) governs the Abdomen, Ren Mai, and Five Solid Zang essence storage; Lianshan (Gen ☶) governs the Spleen-Stomach middle burner, spine, joints, and physiological consolidation.

1. The Lost Secret: Lianshan & Guizang Divine with 7-8; Zhouyi Divines with 9-6

Nine and Six reveal transformation. Seven and Eight reveal the root. Every student of I Ching divination, whether practicing the ancient 50-yarrow-stalk ritual (Da Yan Zhi Shu 大衍之數) or the Tang-Song three-coin method (Huozhulin 火珠林), knows that every line of a hexagram is generated from one of the Four Images (Si Xiang): 6 (Old Yin), 7 (Young Yang), 8 (Young Yin), or 9 (Old Yang). Yet why does the transmitted text of the Zhouyi label every Yang line exclusively as Nine (Initial Nine, Nine in the Second...) and every Yin line exclusively as Six (Initial Six, Six in the Second...), while never once naming a line Seven or Eight?

Extremes trigger reversal. Stillness preserves the true nature. The answer lies in the foundational division of labor among the Three Systems of Changes (三易) explicitly documented by Tang Dynasty imperial scholar Jia Gongyan (賈公彥) in Scroll 24 of the Zhouli Zhengyi Shu (周禮正義疏) and by Kong Yingda (孔穎達) in the Zhouyi Zhengyi:

周易以變者為占,故占九六;連山、歸藏以不變者為占,故占七八。七為少陽,象艮之止;八為少陰,象坤之藏;九六為老陽老陰,動而之變也。 Zhōuyì yǐ biàn zhě wéi zhān, gù zhān Jiǔ Liù; Liánshān, Guīcáng yǐ bùbiàn zhě wéi zhān, gù zhān Qī Bā. Qī wéi Shàoyáng, xiàng Gèn zhī zhǐ; Bā wéi Shàoyīn, xiàng Kūn zhī cáng; Jiǔ Liù wéi Lǎoyáng Lǎoyīn, dòng ér zhī biàn yě.

The Zhouyi takes that which transforms as the basis of divination, and therefore divines with Nine (Old Yang) and Six (Old Yin); Lianshan and Guizang take that which does not transform as the basis of divination, and therefore divine with Seven (Young Yang) and Eight (Young Yin). Seven is Young Yang, corresponding to the halting stillness of Trigram Gen (Lianshan); Eight is Young Yin, corresponding to the receptive storage of Trigram Kun (Guizang); Nine and Six are Old Yang and Old Yin, which reach extreme movement and transform into their opposites.

Four numbers divide Three Changes! One hexagram penetrates Three Powers! Ponder the mathematical precision of this ancient law:
• Number 7 (Young Yang ⚊,nascent Yang stabilized in stillness): In Fu Xi's Early Heaven sequence, Trigram Gen (☶) holds the number 7; structurally, a single Yang line resting atop two Yin lines embodies the virtue of Zhi (止, Halting/Stillness) of Lianshan Yi (Gen First). In divination, a static 7 line represents tangible physical reality, institutional rules, structural support, or immovable physical obstacles standing right in front of the querent.
• Number 8 (Young Yin ⚋, receptive Yin resting quietly within): In the Early Heaven sequence, Trigram Kun (☷) holds the number 8; structurally, static Yin embodies the virtue of Zang (藏, Storage/Concealment) of Guizang Yi (Kun First). In divination, a static 8 line represents subterranean financial reserves, karmic roots, ancestral foundations, or latent internal motives.
• Number 9 (Old Yang ⚊○) & Number 6 (Old Yin ⚋×): Yang advancing to its extreme at 9 transforms into Yin (8); Yin contracting to its extreme at 6 transforms into Yang (7). This is the dynamic engine of Zhouyi (Qian-Kun Transformation), representing imminent breakthroughs, external disruptions, future outcomes, and chronological timing (Ying Qi).

2. Historical Proof: Pre-Qin Divination Cases Using 7 & 8 in Zuozhuan and Guoyu

Ancient annals preserve the precedent. Seven and Eight verify like spirits. To prove that Divining with Seven and Eight (Zhan Qi Ba 占七八) in Lianshan and Guizang is not a late reconstruction but the authentic pre-Qin practice of royal court diviners, let us examine three famous historical cases recorded in China's oldest narrative histories, the Zuozhuan (左傳) and the Guoyu (國語):

  1. Case 1: Gen's Eight (Gen zhi Ba 艮之八) Cast for Mu Jiang of Lu (Zuozhuan · 9th Year of Duke Xiang, 564 BC): When Dowager Mu Jiang of Lu was confined to the Eastern Palace, the Grand Astrologer cast the yarrow stalks and obtained Hexagram Gen transforming into Hexagram Sui (艮之隨), yet the official chronicle explicitly recorded it as Encountered Gen's Eight (遇艮之八)! Why was Pure Gen (䷳) transforming into Lake Thunder Sui (䷐) called Gen's Eight? Because between Gen (☶☶) and Sui (☱☳), five lines moved (Lines 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6 were all 9 or 6), leaving Line 2 (Six in the Second) of Gen as the solitary unchanging Young Yin 8 line! The astrologer told Mu Jiang: This is called Gen transforming to Sui; Sui means going forth, so Your Ladyship will soon exit! Mu Jiang replied: No! In the Zhouyi, Sui requires the four virtues of Yuan, Heng, Li, Zhen to be without blame... Since I lack virtue and sit trapped in the lower place (Line 2 static 8 of Gen: 'Halting one's calves, cannot rescue what follows, one's heart is not glad'), how can I ever exit? True to the Lianshan-Guizang static 8 reading, Mu Jiang died inside the Eastern Palace!
  2. Case 2: Tai's Eight (Tai zhi Ba 泰之八) Cast by Prince Chong'er of Jin (Guoyu · Jinyu 4): When Prince Chong'er (later Duke Wen of Jin) personally cast the yarrow stalks regarding his return to claim the throne of Jin, he obtained Earth Heaven Tai (䷊) with zero moving lines, recorded verbatim as Obtained貞 Tai, unchanging, all eights (得貞泰,不動,皆八也). Minister Sikong Jizi interpreted that because the three Yin lines of outer trigram Kun in Tai were all static 8s (Guizang Young Yin), Heaven and Earth were stably united within, guaranteeing that the Prince would inherit the territory of Jin!
  3. Case 3: Zhun to Yu, All Eights (Zhun zhi Yu, jie Ba 屯之豫皆八, Guoyu · Jinyu 4): When casting Water Thunder Zhun (䷂) transforming into Thunder Earth Yu (䷏), three lines moved (Lines 1, 4, 5) while three Yin lines remained static 8s (Lines 2, 3, 6). The Spring and Autumn court diviners synthesized both Primary Zhun - Transformed Yu (Zhouyi) and the three static 8 lines (Guizang) to conclude: Both layers favor establishing a feudal lord and winning the state.
Mù Jiāng hōng yú Dōnggōng. Shǐ wǎng yě, shì zhī, yù Gèn zhī Bā. Shǐ yuē: Shì wèi Gèn zhī Suí, Suí qí chū yě, jūn bì sù chū. Jiāng yuē: Wáng! Shì yú Zhōuyì yuē: Suí, yuán hēng lì zhēn, wú jiù... Jīn wǒ fùrén ér yù yú luàn, gù zài xiàwèi, ér yǒu bùrén, bùkě wèi yuán, hé yǐ néng chū? Guǒ sǐ yú Dōnggōng.

Mu Jiang died in the Eastern Palace. When she first moved there, she cast the yarrow stalks and encountered Gen's Eight (Line 2 static 8 of Gen). The diviner said: This is Gen transforming into Sui; Sui means going out, so you will surely exit soon. Mu Jiang replied: Not so! In the Zhouyi, Sui requires Supreme Success, Favorable Perseverance, and cuatro virtues to be blameless... Now I am a woman who participated in disorder, trapped in a low position (Gen's static Line 2) without benevolence; how could I possibly exit? Indeed, she died in the Eastern Palace.

3. Mathematics of the Four Images (6 · 7 · 8 · 9): Yarrow Stalk & 3-Coin Casting

Four Images divide motion and stillness. Three coins fix Yin and Yang. To practice Tri-System Integrated Divination, a practitioner must record the exact numerical value (6, 7, 8, or 9) of every line from Line 1 at the bottom to Line 6 at the top (avoiding the sloppy modern habit of marking only moving lines while forgetting which static lines are 7 and which are 8):

Table 7.1: Numerical Conversion of the Four Images (6 · 7 · 8 · 9) in Yarrow Stalk & 3-Coin Divination
Four-Image Number Classical Title 3-Coin Rule (Inscribed Yin = 2, Reverse Yang = 3) Line Symbol Governing Yi System Diagnostic Meaning in Tri-System Divination
Number 7 Young Yang (少陽) 2 Inscribed (Yin) + 1 Reverse (Yang)
2 + 2 + 3 = 7 (Single Yang rules)
⚊ (Static Yang) Lianshan Yi
(Gen First ☶ · 7)
Yang Qi consolidated in firm stillness (Gen Zhi); indicates existing tangible strength, legal walls, or physical bottlenecks.
Number 8 Young Yin (少陰) 2 Reverse (Yang) + 1 Inscribed (Yin)
3 + 3 + 2 = 8 (Single Yin rules)
⚋ (Static Yin) Guizang Yi
(Kun First ☷ · 8)
Yin Qi stored deeply within (Kun Zang); indicates hidden capital reserves, karmic roots, domestic privacy, or chronic foci.
Number 9 Old Yang (老陽) All 3 Reverse (Pure Extreme Yang)
3 + 3 + 3 = 9 (Extreme Yang turns Yin)
⚊○ (Moving Yang) Zhouyi
(Qian First ☰ · Change)
Yang reaching its zenith and transforming into Yin (8); indicates overt action, public breakthroughs, and rapid turns.
Number 6 Old Yin (老陰) All 3 Inscribed (Pure Extreme Yin)
2 + 2 + 2 = 6 (Extreme Yin turns Yang)
⚋× (Moving Yin) Zhouyi
(Extreme Kun turns Qian)
Yin reaching its nadir and transforming into Yang (7); indicates long-simmering hidden factors suddenly erupting into the open.

Note the classical rule in Table 7.1: When tossing three bronze coins (such as Qianlong Tongbao), the side bearing the four Chinese characters belongs to Yin (because concrete scripts have finite form, valued at 2 points), whereas the reverse side (Manchu script or blank motif, valued at 3 points) belongs to Yang. Following the I Ching law Where Yang is numerous, Yin rules; where Yin is numerous, Yang rules:
• Two Yin sides (2+2) and one Yang side (3) are ruled by the solitary Yang: 2 + 2 + 3 = 7 (Young Yang - Lianshan).
• Two Yang sides (3+3) and one Yin side (2) are ruled by the solitary Yin: 3 + 3 + 2 = 8 (Young Yin - Guizang).
By writing the exact number 6, 7, 8, or 9 beside each of the six lines, the complete three-dimensional matrix of San Yi He Can appears instantly!

4. Methodology of Tri-System Integrated Divination (San Yi He Can)

One hexagram splits into three layers. Three layers converge at one mind. Whenever I am consulted on a multi-million-dollar corporate merger, a complex property dispute, or a baffling clinical illness, my Tri-System Integrated Divination protocol proceeds through three disciplined steps:

  1. Step 1: Read the Lianshan Tier (Human Yuan · Static 7 Lines · Shi-Ying & Structural Reality):
Before glancing at the transformed hexagram, examine the Primary Hexagram (Ben Gua 本卦). Identify where the Shi Line (世爻, Self/Host) and Ying Line (應爻, Other/Guest/Environment) sit, what Earthly Branches they carry, and which of the Six Relations (Parents, Siblings, Offspring, Wife-Wealth, Official-Ghost) they represent. Highlight every line carrying 7 (Young Yang): these are the Lianshan mountain peaks standing immovably inside the hexagram. If the Target Spirit (Yong Shen) or Shi Line is a prosperous static 7 supported by the Month and Day, the querent's current position is rock-solid; conversely, if an Enemy Spirit (Ji Shen) or Official Ghost stands as a static 7 in the Intermediary Lines (Jian Yao, the two lines between Shi and Ying), a stubborn physical or institutional barrier is blocking the path!
  2. Step 2: Read the Guizang Tier (Earth Yuan · Static 8 Lines · Hidden Spirit Fu Shen & Soul States):
Next, descend beneath the surface of the Primary Hexagram to uncover the Guizang subterranean root. Inspect all lines carrying 8 (Young Yin) and identify which of the Eight Palaces (Qian, Dui, Li, Zhen, Xun, Kan, Gen, Kun) governs the hexagram. If the Target Spirit does not appear on the surface of the Primary Hexagram, look beneath the surface into the Pure Palace Root Hexagram to locate the Hidden Spirit (Fu Shen 伏神)! In Tri-System philosophy, the surface Flying Spirit (Fei Shen) belongs to Lianshan/Zhouyi, whereas the subterranean Hidden Spirit (Fu Shen) is the pure embodiment of Guizang Yi! Simultaneously, check whether the hexagram is a Wandering Soul (You Hun 游魂, 7th hexagram of a palace) or a Returning Soul (Gui Hun 歸魂, 8th and final hexagram of a palace).
  3. Step 3: Read the Zhouyi Tier (Heaven Yuan · Moving 9-6 Lines · Transformed Hexagram & Timing):
Finally, analyze the moving Old Yang (9) and Old Yin (6) lines along with the Transformed Hexagram (Zhi Gua 之卦). Moving lines reveal which force is breaking the static equilibrium of Lianshan and Guizang to drive future change: transforming into Return Production (Hui Tou Sheng), Return Control (Hui Tou Ke), Advancing Spirit (Jin Shen: Shen to You, Yin to Mao), or Retreating Spirit (Tui Shen). The intersection of the moving line's stem-branch with the annual, monthly, and daily pillars pinpoints the exact Chronological Timing (Ying Qi 應期).

5. The Lianshan Tier in Six Lines: Shi-Ying Axis, Gen Barriers & Present Reality

Shi stands as the sovereign host. Ying responds as the visiting guest. In Jing Fang's (77-37 BC) Six-Line Najia system derived from the Lianshan Eight-Palace matrix, the anchor of the Human Yuan tier is the Shi (世, Self) and Ying (應, Other) coordinate pair, always separated by two intervening lines:
• Pure Palace Hexagrams (8th Generation): Shi sits at Line 6 (the mountain summit), Ying at Line 3.
• First-Generation Hexagrams (Line 1 changes): Shi sits at Line 1 (the foundation), Ying at Line 4.
• Second-Generation Hexagrams (Line 2 changes): Shi sits at Line 2, Ying at Line 5.
• Third-Generation Hexagrams (Line 3 changes - Parent Intercourse): Shi sits at Line 3, Ying at Line 6.
• Fourth-Generation Hexagrams (Line 4 changes): Shi sits at Line 4 (threshold of the outer trigram), Ying at Line 1.
• Fifth-Generation Hexagrams (Line 5 changes - Royal Throne): Shi sits at Line 5, Ying at Line 2.
• Wandering Soul (You Hun - Line 4 reverts): Shi sits at Line 4, Ying at Line 1.
• Returning Soul (Gui Hun - Inner 3 lines revert): Shi returns to Line 3 (inner stability), Ying at Line 6.
Under Lianshan Yi diagnostics, the two lines sandwiched between Shi and Ying are the Intermediary Lines (Jian Yao 間爻). When divining about commercial negotiations, marriages, or lawsuits, a prosperous Young Yang 7 line carrying Siblings (wealth-robbers) or Official Ghosts in the Intermediary Lines depicts a sheer Lianshan mountain ridge standing between Self (Shi) and Counterparty (Ying)!

6. The Guizang Tier in Six Lines: Hidden Spirit (Fu Shen) & Wandering/Returning Soul

Qi hides in the Hidden Spirit. The soul returns to the Root Palace. Why do certain divination charts asked about wealth display zero Wife-Wealth lines across all six positions of the surface hexagram, or charts asked about children/medicine display zero Offspring lines? Novices hastily declare no wealth or no cure. Yet a master initiated into Guizang Yi understands that nothing vanishes from the universe: what does not appear on the surface (Fei Shen) is stored beneath the earth (Guizang) inside the Pure Palace Root Hexagram as the Hidden Spirit (Fu Shen 伏神)!

用神不現,伏於本宮之下,此歸藏之義也。飛神生伏,藏寶待時而出;飛神克伏,生機困於重泉。游魂則神馳於外,歸魂則氣返於根。 Yòngshén bùxiàn, fú yú Běngōng zhī xià, cǐ Guīcáng zhī yì yě. Fēishén shēng Fú, cáng bǎo dài shí ér chū; Fēishén kè Fú, shēngjī kùn yú chóngquán. Yóuhún zé shén chí yú wài, Guīhún zé qì fǎn yú gēn.

When the Target Spirit does not appear on the surface hexagram but lies hidden beneath the Root Palace, this is the principle of Guizang Yi. When the surface Flying Spirit produces the Hidden Spirit below, treasure is stored in the vault awaiting the time of emergence; when the Flying Spirit suppresses and controls the Hidden Spirit, vitality is trapped in the deep springs. In Wandering Soul hexagrams, the spirit gallops outward; in Returning Soul hexagrams, vital Qi returns to its root.

Commentary on Huozhulin & Jing Shi Yi Zhuan (京氏易傳)

One word Storage (Zang) illuminates the whole canon! Moreover, building upon Chapter 03: Guizang Yi & Wangjiatai Bamboo Slips, the Wandering Soul (You Hun) and Returning Soul (Gui Hun) states at the end of each palace carry immense clinical and strategic weight:
• The 8 Wandering Soul Hexagrams (Jin ䷢, Ming Yi ䷣, Kui ䷥, Yi ䷚, Zhong Fu ䷼, Song ䷅, Xiao Guo ䷽, Jin/Bi): Represent consciousness projecting outward, expansion into foreign markets, restlessness, or in severe illness, the spirit detaching from the body (insomnia, delirium).
• The 8 Returning Soul Hexagrams (Da You ䷍, Sui ䷐, Shi ䷆, Jian ䷴, Bi ䷇, Gu ䷑, Tong Ren ䷌, Gui Mei ䷵): The three lines of the inner trigram revert completely back to the Pure Palace Root! This is the supreme emblem of Guizang (Returning to Store in the Mother Root): in critical illness, obtaining a Returning Soul hexagram signals that vital Qi is returning to the organs; in capital recovery, funds return to the treasury; whereas in travel or emigration, the person stays home!

7. Mastering Six-Line Static Hexagrams (All 7-8) & Five-Line Moving Oracles

Extreme stillness holds clear images. Chaotic motion seeks the sole static line. In daily divinatory practice, two special configurations baffle 90% of conventional readers yet represent the crowning strength of Tri-System Integrated Divination:

  1. Configuration 1: The Six-Line Static Hexagram (All 6 lines are 7 and 8; probability $ (3/4)^6 \approx 17.8\% $):
Roughly once in every five or six casts, you will obtain a hexagram with zero moving lines (composed entirely of Young Yang 7 and Young Yin 8). Here, the Zhouyi tier steps back, handing full jurisdiction to Lianshan (7) and Guizang (8):
    • Compare the ratio of 7s to 8s: if static 7s dominate (Lianshan predominance), the situation is locked by external regulations, physical boundaries, or rigid postures; if static 8s dominate (Guizang predominance), the outcome depends on subterranean capital, internal preparation, or unspoken agreements.
    • Check for Dark Movement (An Dong 暗動): when a prosperous static 7 or 8 line is clashed directly by the Day Branch, that static line awakens explosively like an underground geyser!
  2. Configuration 2: Five Moving Lines & One Static Line (The Sole Static Line Du Jing Yao 獨靜爻):
When four or five lines move simultaneously (9s and 6s firing in all directions), attempting to chain five moving arrows creates total confusion. The classical Lianshan-Guizang 7-8 Law states: When many lines move, take stillness as the host; when five lines move, examine the solitary static line! Just like Mu Jiang's famous Gen's Eight in the Zuozhuan, that single static 7 or 8 line standing unshaken amidst the storm is the Taiji Eye that dictates the final verdict!

8. Medicine and Yi Share One Source (Yi Yi Tong Yuan): Three Changes in the Neijing

Supreme physicians master the Yi. Three Changes diagnose the human frame. Beyond Feng Shui and divination, The Three Systems of Changes form the physiological and diagnostic bedrock of Classical Chinese Medicine. In the Tang Dynasty, Medicine King Sun Simiao (孫思邈) declared: Without mastering the Yi, one is unfit to be called a Great Physician. In the Ming Dynasty, the great medical encyclopedist Zhang Jingyue (張景岳, 1563-1640) composed his celebrated treatise The Meaning of Medicine and Yi (Yi Yi Yi 醫易義) in the Leijing Tuyi (類經圖翼), proving that human physiology is a living microcosm of the Three Changes:

天地之道,以陰陽二氣造化萬物;人身之理,以陰陽二氣長養百骸。易具醫之理,醫得易之用。乾為首而統陽氣之升降,坤為腹而司五臟之歸藏,艮為脾胃背脊而主氣血之止聚。 Tiāndì zhī dào, yǐ Yīnyáng èrqì zàohuà wànwù; rénshēn zhī lǐ, yǐ Yīnyáng èrqì zhǎngyǎng bǎihái. Yì jù Yī zhī lǐ, Yī dé Yì zhī yòng. Qián wéi shǒu ér tǒng Yángqì zhī shēngjiàng, Kūn wéi fù ér sī Wǔzàng zhī guīcáng, Gèn wéi píwèi bèijǐ ér zhǔ qìxuè zhī zhǐjù.

The Way of Heaven and Earth creates myriad things through the two breaths of Yin and Yang; the principle of the human body nourishes the hundred bones through Yin and Yang. The Yi possesses the principle of Medicine, and Medicine obtains the function of the Yi. Qian acts as the Head to command the ascent and descent of Yang Qi; Kun acts as the Abdomen to govern the returning storage (Guizang) of the Five Viscera; Gen acts as the Spleen, Stomach, and Spine to rule the halting condensation of Qi and Blood.

Zhang Jingyue (Ming Dynasty), Leijing Tuyi (類經圖翼), Scroll 3 · Yi Yi Yi

The Yi holds the Principle of Medicine! Medicine obtains the Function of the Yi! Consider the anatomical terminology of the Huangdi Neijing (黃帝內經, Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon): why are the five core solid organs (Heart, Liver, Spleen, Lung, Kidney) named Five Zang (五臟 / 五藏), while the six hollow digestive and excretory organs (Gallbladder, Stomach, Small Intestine, Large Intestine, Bladder, Triple Burner) are named Six Fu (六腑)? In Suwen · Chapter 11, the Yellow Emperor states: The Five Zang store vital essence and Qi without draining it (藏精氣而不瀉也); the Six Fu transmit and transform substances without storing them (傳化物而不藏). The Storage (Zang 藏) of the Five Solid Viscera is literally Guizang Yi (歸藏易), whereas the Transmission and Transformation (Chuan Hua 傳化) of the Six Hollow Bowels is literally Zhouyi (周易)!

9. The Qian Head - Kun Abdomen - Gen Spleen Axis in Clinical Diagnosis

Qian rules the head and Yang Qi. Kun rules the abdomen and stored essence. Gen rules the spine and middle burner. Synthesizing the Shuo Gua Zhuan body map (Qian is the head, Kun is the abdomen, Zhen is the feet, Xun is the thighs, Kan is the ears/kidneys, Li is the eyes/heart, Gen is the hands/back, Dui is the mouth/lungs) with the Huangdi Neijing yields the complete clinical matrix of Tri-System Medical Yi:

10. Uniting Divination & Residence (Bu Zhai He Yi): Remote Feng Shui Auditing

Cast the hexagram to see the house. Rectify the house to transform the hexagram. One of the most awe-inspiring skills of classical masters is Uniting Divination and Residence (Bu Zhai He Yi 卜宅合一): diagnosing the exact architectural and environmental defects of a home or corporate headquarters from thousands of miles away simply by reading a cast hexagram! How can three bronze coins tossed in one city pinpoint a cracked septic pipe in the Northeast or a transformer pylon in the South of a villa in another city? Because through Cosmic Resonance (Gan Ying), the homeowner's bio-energetic field and their dwelling's spatial field form a single entangled hologram!

The Six-Line Architectural Mapping Law in Tri-System Divination:
• Line 1 (Bottom Yao): Foundation slab, subterranean soil veins, underground drains, and wells (Guizang Tier).
• Line 2 (Second Yao): Kitchen stove (Zao), inner living hall (Ming Tang), and female head of house.
• Line 3 (Third Yao): Interior bedroom doors, master bed, and partition walls (Lianshan Tier).
• Line 4 (Fourth Yao): Main entrance gate, foyer threshold, and bathrooms.
• Line 5 (Fifth Yao): Exterior road/waterway, CEO/patriarch, and central ancestral hall.
• Line 6 (Top Yao): Roof, perimeter boundary walls, tall trees, or neighboring high-rise towers (Zhouyi Tier).

Clinical & Geomantic Screening Protocol for the 2026 Bing Wu & 2027 Ding Wei Years

As we enter the peak Fire years of 2026 (Bing Wu) and 2027 (Ding Wei) inside Period 9, watch closely for two critical hexagram signatures during consultations:

  • Signature 1: Official Ghost carrying Wu Fire (or Si Fire) moving at Line 5 / Line 6 to attack a Shen/You Metal Shi Line: Clinically, this warns of Excess Fire scorching Lung Metal and agitating Heart Spirit (cardiovascular strain, blood pressure spikes, and acute insomnia in 2026). Geomantically, it guarantees that the Due South sector (Wu - Li 9) of the client's property has an active heat source, red glare, or construction disturbance violating the 2026 Grand Duke (Tai Sui) and Five Yellow!
  • Signature 2: Shi Line carrying Chou or Wei Earth clashed/broken at Line 2 / Line 3: This signals that the building's Lianshan (Northeast Chou-Gen) - Guizang (Southwest Wei-Kun) axis is ruptured (typically by a misplaced stove or a bathroom sitting on the NE-SW diagonal), triggering digestive ulcers and hidden financial leakage during the 2027 Ding Wei year.

11. Clinical & Corporate Case Studies: M&A Strategy, Property Audit & Insomnia Cure

Three cases verify the canon. Three Changes prove their power. To bring our 7-chapter monograph series to a practical culmination, here are three real-world cases uniting Static 7-8 Reading, Moving 9-6 Reading, Xuan Kong Da Gua, and Medical Yi:

Case Study 01 · Corporate M&A

Six-Line Static Thunder Earth Yu ䷏ (7-8 Reading · Township Acquisition)

Context & Tri-System Verdict:

  • The Query: In April 2025 (Chen Month, Shen Day), a conglomerate Chairman asked whether to acquire a controlling stake in a stalled township project. He cast Thunder Earth Yu (䷏) with all six lines static (Line 4 was Young Yang 7; Lines 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 were all Young Yin 8!).
  • Lianshan Tier (Static 7): Across the entire hexagram, Line 4 (Wu Fire Parents - master project permits) was the sole Young Yang 7 line supporting the hexagram! This proved the core legal permits were 100% genuine and merely halted temporarily (Gen Zhi).
  • Guizang Tier (Static 8 & Fu Shen): Shi sat at Line 1 (Wei Earth Wife-Wealth as Young Yin 8), while beneath Line 3 hid Offspring Shen Metal (Fu Shen), which was the exact Day Branch (Shen Day)! Massive profit potential was stored underground ready to emerge.
  • Outcome: I advised signing the acquisition in the Si Month (when Wu Fire Parents entered Prosperity). In November 2025, the 1/500 master plan was approved and asset valuation rose 180%.
Case Study 02 · Remote Feng Shui Audit

Mountain Wind Gu ䷑ to Mountain Earth Bo ䷖ (Subterranean Root Damage)

Context & Tri-System Verdict:

  • The Query: A business family suffered three consecutive years of lawsuits while the husband developed severe lumbar disc pain. Casting yielded Mountain Wind Gu (䷑, Returning Soul of Xun Palace) with Lines 2 and 3 moving to form Mountain Earth Bo (䷖).
  • Tri-System Diagnosis: Hexagram Gu signifies chronic decay caused by Wind Wood (Xun) penetrating beneath Mountain Earth (Gen). Line 6 (Gen top line) was a static Young Yang 7, while Line 2 (You Metal Official Ghost) and Line 3 (Hai Water Parents) moved as Old Yang 9 to strip away the foundation into Hexagram Bo (Splitting Apart)!
  • Remote Property Verification: Upper Gen and Lower Xun pointed directly to the Northeast (Gen) and Southeast (Xun) sectors of their villa, where tree roots were cracking an underground water pipe (Hai Water at Line 3)! On-site inspection confirmed a giant banyan tree in the Northeast had ruptured the storm drain, and the master bedroom door sat on a Bo Void line.
  • Resolution: Removed the roots, sealed the drain, and recalibrated the bedroom door onto an auspicious line of Earth Mountain Qian (䷎). Within three months, his spine recovered and the lawsuit was dismissed.
Case Study 03 · Clinical Medical Yi

Heaven Fire Tong Ren ䷌ (Returning Soul · Curing Severe Insomnia)

Context & Tri-System Verdict:

  • Clinical Presentation: A 48-year-old female executive suffered two years of severe insomnia, palpitations, and facial flushing with ice-cold feet. Casting yielded Heaven Fire Tong Ren (䷌, Returning Soul of Li Palace) with Line 5 (Shen Metal Wife-Wealth, 9) moving to form Pure Li (䷝).
  • Medical Yi Analysis: Upper Trigram Qian (Head - Zhouyi) over Lower Trigram Li (Heart Fire) transforming into Pure Li (double blazing fire!). The Shi Line at Line 3 (Hai Water Official Ghost - Kidney Water) held Young Yin 8 (Guizang) trapped between two layers of Fire, preventing Kidney Water in the Lower Jiao from ascending to communicate with Heart Fire (Heart-Kidney non-communication).
  • Combined Herbal & Spatial Cure: Because Tong Ren is a Returning Soul (Gui Hun) hexagram and the Line 5 Shen Metal moved to produce the Line 3 Hai Water Shi line (Metal generates Water!), recovery was assured by Guiding Fire Back to the Origin. Combining the classical formula Jiao Tai Wan (Coptis & Cinnamon Bark with Rehmannia) with moving her bed from the Southern room (Li Fire) to the Northern room (Kan 1 Water Guizang) restored 7 hours of deep nightly sleep within 21 days.

12. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) & Authoritative Classical Bibliography

1. What does the classical maxim Lianshan and Guizang divine with 7 and 8; Zhouyi divines with 9 and 6 mean?

When casting a hexagram via the 50-yarrow-stalk method or the 3-coin method, every line yields one of four numbers: 6 (Old Yin, moving), 7 (Young Yang, static), 8 (Young Yin, static), or 9 (Old Yang, moving). Zhouyi focuses on dynamic change and therefore reads the moving 9 and 6 lines. Conversely, Lianshan Yi (Gen Stillness) and Guizang Yi (Kun Storage) focus on structural constancy and hidden reserves, reading the static 7 (Young Yang) and static 8 (Young Yin) lines of the primary hexagram.

2. Is there historical proof in pre-Qin classics that ancient diviners actually read the numbers 7 and 8?

Yes, multiple verbatim records survive in the Zuozhuan (左傳) and Guoyu (國語). The most famous are: (1) Gen's Eight (Gen zhi Ba 艮之八) cast by Mu Jiang of Lu in 564 BC (Zuozhuan, 9th Year of Duke Xiang), where 5 lines moved to form Hexagram Sui, leaving Line 2 as the sole static 8 line; (2) Tai's Eight (Tai zhi Ba 泰之八) cast by Prince Chong'er of Jin (Guoyu, Jinyu 4), recorded as Obtained static Tai, unchanging, all eights; and (3) Zhun to Yu, all eights in Guoyu.

3. How does the Tri-System Integrated Divination (San Yi He Can) protocol work in practice?

Instead of looking only at moving lines, the practitioner reads every cast hexagram across three simultaneous layers: (1) Lianshan Tier (Human Yuan): Examine the Primary Hexagram, static 7 (Young Yang) lines, the Shi (Self) and Ying (Other) positions, and Gen mountain barriers to diagnose present physical reality; (2) Guizang Tier (Earth Yuan): Examine static 8 (Young Yin) lines, the Pure Palace Root Hexagram, Hidden Spirits (Fu Shen), and Wandering/Returning Soul states to diagnose hidden reserves and root causes; (3) Zhouyi Tier (Heaven Yuan): Examine moving 9 and 6 lines, the Transformed Hexagram (Zhi Gua), and Day/Month stems and branches to forecast future outcomes and exact timing.

4. How do you distinguish 6, 7, 8, and 9 when casting with three classical coins (Huozhulin method)?

In classical coin divination, the Inscribed/Character side (Yin, specific form) counts as 2 points, and the Blank/Motif reverse side (Yang, boundless) counts as 3 points. Tossing three coins yields:
• Three Yang reverse sides (3+3+3 = 9): Old Yang (Moving Yang ⚊○, transforms to Yin) → Zhouyi Tier.
• Three Yin character sides (2+2+2 = 6): Old Yin (Moving Yin ⚋×, transforms to Yang) → Zhouyi Tier.
• Two Yin character sides + One Yang reverse side (2+2+3 = 7): Young Yang (Static Yang ⚊) → Lianshan Pillar (Gen 7).
• Two Yang reverse sides + One Yin character side (3+3+2 = 8): Young Yin (Static Yin ⚋) → Guizang Pillar (Kun 8).

5. How does Tri-System Divination interpret a Six-Line Static Hexagram (all lines are 7 and 8, with no moving lines)?

Practitioners trained only in Zhouyi often struggle when all six lines are static (probability ~17.8%) because there is no transformed hexagram. In Tri-System Divination, a Six-Line Static Hexagram is the native domain of Lianshan and Guizang! With zero moving lines, 100% of the Qi is concentrated in the Primary Hexagram: static 7 lines pinpoint where Yang force is consolidated or blocking progress (Lianshan), while static 8 lines pinpoint where Yin resources are stored (Guizang), triggered when clashed into Dark Movement (An Dong) by the Day Branch.

6. Why is a Five-Line Moving Hexagram governed by the Lianshan-Guizang Sole Static Line (Du Jing Yao)?

Classical canon states: A single moving line is easy to read, chaotic movement is hard to fathom; when five lines move, examine the one static line. When five lines move (9 or 6) and only one line remains static (7 or 8), just like Mu Jiang's Gen's Eight in the Zuozhuan, that solitary static line is the eye of the hurricane (the Taiji pivot) that determines the true outcome.

7. How does Medicine and Yi Share One Source (Yi Yi Tong Yuan) connect the Three Changes to the Huangdi Neijing?

Ming Dynasty medical sage Zhang Jingyue wrote in Leijing Tuyi: Without knowing the Yi, one is unfit to be a Great Physician. In human physiology:
• Zhouyi (Qian First ☰): Governs the Head, Brain, Governing Vessel (Du Mai), Defensive Qi (Wei Qi), and the Six Hollow Fu organs that transmit and transform.
• Guizang (Kun First ☷): Governs the Abdomen, Conception Vessel (Ren Mai), and the Five Solid Zang organs that store vital essence and blood (Zang means to store).
• Lianshan (Gen First ☶): Governs the Post-Heaven Spleen-Stomach (Gen Yang Earth), the Spine, joints, and physiological hemostasis and consolidation.

8. How can you use a Tri-System Divination hexagram to diagnose architectural Feng Shui defects remotely?

Known as Uniting Divination and Residence (Bu Zhai He Yi), the six lines map onto the vertical anatomy of a building (Line 1 foundation/drains, Line 2 kitchen/hall, Line 3 inner doors/bed, Line 4 main gate, Line 5 road/master, Line 6 roof/neighbors) while the trigrams and branches map onto compass sectors. If an afflicting Official Ghost or Sibling line attacks the Target Spirit from Xun (Southeast) or Zi (North), inspecting those exact sectors with a Xuan Kong Da Gua Luo Pan will reveal the physical landform or sub-degree defect.
