Góc atd là gìWhat the atd angle is
The atd angle is a measurement from the study of skin ridges, dermatoglyphics. The palm has spots where three ridge flows part, called triradii. According to Fogle's genetics teaching text (1990), the base of the four fingers usually carries four triradii, named a, b, c, d from the index to the little finger, and near the point where the palm joins the wrist there is usually an axial triradius t. Draw a line from a to t and another from d to t, and the angle at t is the atd angle.
The reliability study by Brunson and colleagues gives a tighter definition: the angle formed by lines between the triradii below the first and last digits and the most proximal triradius on the hypothenar region of the palm. Thute and colleagues (2024) place t at the base of the palm between the thenar and hypothenar eminences. In palmistry terms, t usually sits in the gap between the Venus and Moon mounts.
Why measure it? Brunson and colleagues note that dermatoglyphic traits are widely used markers in studies of fetal development, developmental disturbances, disease and genetics. Ridges form before birth, as our piece on what dermatoglyphics is explains, so they are a trace left from the first weeks of life.
Every hand here follows one convention: a right palm seen face on, thumb on the right, so the index and point a are on the right, the little finger and point d on the left. When a left hand is needed, the drawing is mirrored and labelled.
Đo góc atd thế nàoHow the atd angle is measured
Phép đo chỉ có bốn bước. Tìm tam giác điểm a dưới ngón trỏ và d dưới ngón út. Tìm tam giác điểm trục t ở chân lòng bàn tay. Kẻ hai đường thẳng từ t tới a và từ t tới d. Đo góc tại t. Cái khó không nằm ở phép đo, mà ở bước tìm điểm: tấm dấu hay tấm ảnh phải rõ cả vùng gốc ngón lẫn vùng sát cổ tay.
The measurement takes four steps. Find triradius a below the index and d below the little finger. Find the axial triradius t at the base of the palm. Draw straight lines from t to a and from t to d. Measure the angle at t. The hard part is not the measuring but finding the points: the print or photo must show both the finger base and the area next to the wrist clearly.
Tools vary. In the Brunson study, the first reader used photocopies of the prints, a goniometer and a magnifying glass. The second scanned the prints at 400 DPI and used the angle tool of an image editor. Both rounded to the nearest degree.
Đo lại có ra như cũ khôngDoes it give the same result twice
Yes, once the points are found. Brunson and colleagues had two readers measure the prints of 100 people. Each reader's repeat measurements correlated at 0.97 or higher, and the two readers agreed with each other at 0.92 to 0.96. On the same set, the first reader averaged 45.6 degrees and the second 44.8.
But not every print can be measured. Of 200 palm prints, the first reader could measure 149 and the second 179. The usual trouble is a triradius that is faint, missing or out of place. That is why an atd figure should always come with questions: was the print clear, who measured it, and with what.
Tam giác điểm trục t, t′ và t″The axial triradius: t, t′ and t″
The axial triradius does not always sit next to the wrist. Fogle (1990) records three positions. The most common is t, near where the palm joins the wrist. About 2% of typical people have it near the centre of the palm, called t″. The halfway position, t′, is found in about 21% of typical people. About 11% have more than one axial triradius on the same palm.
When a palm has two axial triradii, authors choose differently. Fogle's text takes only the largest angle. Brunson and colleagues, following David (1981), use only the one nearer the wrist, t rather than t′, t′ rather than t″. On the same hand the two rules give very different numbers. An atd figure means little until you know which t was used.
The atd angle is not a fixed figure like a pattern type. Brunson and colleagues repeat two points from earlier authors. First, after Mavalwala (1979), a print taken with the fingers together and one with the fingers spread give different measurements for the same person. Second, after Cummins and Midlo (1961), the angle changes with age: it is larger in children than in adults.
Nor do the two hands give the same figure. In Thute and colleagues' 2024 study of 200 first year medical students in Wardha, India, the mean atd angle was 45.55 degrees on the right hand and 43.77 on the left. The study found no significant difference between men and women.
Từ đó ra năm điều cần ghi cùng mỗi con số atd, để lần đo sau còn so được với lần đo trước:
Hence five things to record with every atd figure, so that one measurement can be compared with the next:
- Which hand: left or right, and which is dominant.
- Finger pose when printing or photographing: together or spread, and keep it the same next time.
- Age at the time, above all for children.
- Whether the axial triradius is at t, t′ or t″, how many there are, which one was used.
- Whether the print or photo shows both the finger base and the area by the wrist clearly.
Góc atd bao nhiêu là thườngWhat a typical atd angle is
There is no single standard for everyone. Each study measures one population, with one printing method and one rule for choosing t. The sources read for this piece put the average in typical people at about 44 to 48 degrees: 45.55 on the right and 43.77 on the left for 200 Indian medical students, 45.6 and 44.8 for the two readers of the same 100 prints in the Brunson study, and 48 for typical people in Fogle's teaching text.
The bottom bar is the mean for people with Down syndrome in the same Fogle text, 81 degrees. It describes a whole group, not a cut off for sorting individuals. The next section explains why.
Góc atd và hội chứng Down: khác biệt nhóm, không chẩn đoán một ngườiThe atd angle and Down syndrome: a group difference, not a diagnosis
This is what worries parents most, so it needs saying plainly. Wikipedia notes that people with Down syndrome often have mainly ulnar loops and a distinct atd angle. Fogle (1990) gives figures: a mean of 48 degrees in typical people, 81 in people with Down syndrome. Wikipedia also notes that in a few other rare genetic conditions the axial triradius sits at t′ or t″ more often than usual.
But that is a difference in averages between two groups. Fogle's own text states that no one feature is diagnostic, that many of these patterns are found in the normal population, and that chromosome analysis or other appropriate tests are essential to confirm anything. By the same source, about 2% of typical people have a t″ triradius, roughly one healthy person in fifty with a very wide atd angle.
MedlinePlus puts Down syndrome at about 1 in 700 newborns, mostly from each cell carrying three copies of chromosome 21 instead of two. Only genetic testing can answer that question. An angle drawn on palm ridges cannot. Our piece on the single palmar crease works through 700 newborns to show why a sign common in one group still predicts nothing for an individual.
If someone measures your child's atd angle and calls it "unusually wide", please do not panic. The angle shifts with age, hand pose and the choice of t, and wide angles occur in perfectly healthy people. If you have any concern about your child's health or development, ask the paediatrician, not a palm reader. This article is no substitute for a medical examination.
Góc atd có đoán được năng khiếu, tốc độ học khôngCan the atd angle predict talent or learning speed
Some fingerprint talent reports, of the kind discussed in our piece on whether fingerprint tests work, have a separate atd section that sorts children by "learning speed": under 35 degrees very fast, 35 to 40 stable, 40 to 45 step by step, over 45 slow and needing more steps. This piece names no provider and discusses only the scale.
Set the scale beside real data and three gaps appear. First, the mean for typical adults already sits around 44 to 48 degrees, so the scale would call almost half of the medical students in the 2024 study slow learners. Second, the angle is larger in children than in adults, so the younger the child, the likelier the "slow" label. Third, the same hand gives different numbers with fingers together or spread, or with t chosen instead of t′.
As for that 2024 study, it did report an association between the atd angle and the students' entrance exam scores. But the authors themselves call it a small scale study in a single institute, not compared with students elsewhere, and say large multi institutional studies are needed before the angle could be a reliable tool for predicting academic performance. An average association within one group does not allow reading one child's ability.
No accepted scientific study shows that the atd angle predicts talent, learning speed or the right career for a child. To understand how your child learns, watch what they do, talk with their teachers, and if you need a test, see a psychologist who uses validated instruments. Our piece what DMIT is covers these packages in more depth.
Thầy Ưng Khiêm dùng góc atd thế nàoHow Master Ung Khiem uses the atd angle
The Sinh Trac Tam Tuong hub lists the atd angle among the indices recorded in the measurement section of the book, and states that measurements such as pattern type, ridge count and the atd angle are real data of dermatoglyphics, while the reading of character is classical physiognomy, for reflection and self understanding. This piece keeps to that line.
The atd angle belongs to modern dermatoglyphics, not to classical physiognomy. So the Master records it in the measurement file in full: the angle on each hand, where t lies, the hand pose in the photo, so you have the real figure for your own hand and know how it was taken.
The Master reads no talent, learning speed or health from this angle. The reading comes from fingerprints, palm lines and the face set side by side, as our piece on why three methods explains. Read to understand yourself, not to fear.
Muốn tự nhìn thấy ba điểm a, d, t trên tay mình, hãy chụp lòng bàn tay thật rõ, đủ cả gốc ngón lẫn vùng sát cổ tay, giữ các ngón khép tự nhiên và chụp hai tay cùng một tư thế. Bài chụp ảnh xem chỉ tay hướng dẫn kỹ từng bước.
To see points a, d and t on your own hand, photograph the palm sharply, showing both the finger base and the area by the wrist, keep the fingers naturally together, and shoot both hands in the same pose. Our guide to photographing your palm walks through each step.

Hỏi đápQuestions
Góc atd là gì?What is the atd angle?
Là góc tại tam giác điểm trục t gần cổ tay, giữa hai đường nối t với tam giác điểm a dưới ngón trỏ và d dưới ngón út. Đây là một số đo của ngành vân da.
It is the angle at the axial triradius t near the wrist, between the lines joining t to triradius a below the index and d below the little finger. It is a dermatoglyphic measurement.
Góc atd bình thường là bao nhiêu độ?What is a normal atd angle?
There is no single standard. The sources read for this piece give averages of about 44 to 48 degrees in typical people, varying with population and method.
t, t′ và t″ là gì?What are t, t′ and t″?
Là ba vị trí của tam giác điểm trục. t nằm gần cổ tay, thường gặp nhất. t′ nằm lưng chừng, gặp ở khoảng 21% người thường. t″ gần giữa lòng bàn tay, khoảng 2%. t càng lên cao thì góc atd càng lớn.
They are the three positions of the axial triradius. t near the wrist is the most common, t′ halfway up in about 21% of typical people, t″ near the palm centre in about 2%. The higher t sits, the wider the angle.
Does a wide atd angle mean illness?
No. People with Down syndrome have wider angles on average, but wide angles also occur in perfectly healthy people, and no single ridge feature is diagnostic. Health questions belong with a doctor.
Can the atd angle predict a child's learning speed?
No. No accepted study shows it can. By the "learning speed" scale in some reports, almost half of the medical students in a 2024 study would be called slow learners.
Vì sao hai lần đo góc atd cho hai số khác nhau? Why do two atd measurements differ?
Because the angle depends on finger pose when printing, together or spread, on age, on left or right hand, on which t is chosen when there are several, and on the reader. Record all of these to compare.
