Tướng tai: vành tai, dái tai, tai cao thấpEar reading: the rims, the lobes, and how high the ears sit

The ear is the first feature on the yearly chart and the hardest to see in a frontal photo. This piece goes further than the ear section of the five features article: it names each part of the ear in anatomy and in the classics, measures ear height against the brows and nose in profile, looks at the rims, shape, lobe, set and colour, then sets all this beside what science has measured, on a male and a female face.

Ear reading is the part of Chinese physiognomy that reads the ears, the feature the classics call the Official of Hearing. The Complete Book of Spirit Physiognomy describes complete ears as fresh in colour, rising above the brows, with clear rims, lying close to the head, thick, with a wide opening. The reader measures the ear in profile, against the brow and nose. This is tradition for reference. Science shows lobe attachment involves many genes and that ears lengthen with age.

Tướng tai là gìWhat ear reading is

In Chinese physiognomy the ear is one of the five features of the face, titled the Official of Hearing. The face map on the main page gives its meaning as: The official who listens and gathers. The same ears sit on two other map layers: among the four rivers they are the Yangtze, The ears are the Yangtze. On the hundred year chart they hold the first fourteen years of life.

The five features article covered the ear briefly. This piece goes deep into one feature: what parts the ear has, what each is called in anatomy and in the classics, how to measure ear height, then the rims, lobe, set, colour, and what science has measured about ears.

Men start at the left ear, women at the right. Left and right are the subject's own.

The Verse of Yearly Fortune Points opens with the instruction that men go left and women right, each side with its own form. So ages 1 to 7 sit on a man's left ear and on a woman's right ear. The name of each stage follows the age, not the side: ages 1 and 2 are always the Heavenly Wheel at the top of the rim, ages 5 to 7 always the Heavenly Rim and Lobe at the lobe, whichever ear it is.

The five features section of the Complete Book of Spirit Physiognomy also says that the left ear is the Metal Star and the right ear the Wood Star. Figure 1 names the two stars under the ears, in the element colours of Metal and Wood.

Các phần của tai: tên giải phẫu và tên sách tướngThe parts of the ear: anatomy and the classics

The visible part of the ear is the auricle or pinna. Anatomically it is made of skin, cartilage, ligaments and muscle, while roughly the lowest quarter has no cartilage, only skin over fat, and is called the lobe. That is why the lobe is softer than the rest of the ear. The auricle first appears around the sixth week of pregnancy, from small hillocks of the first and second pharyngeal arches.

The classics name the ear more briefly than anatomy. The most telling word is luan, a wheel: Vietnamese anatomy calls the outer edge the "luan ridge", and the classics call it the Wheel. The ridge inside it, facing the helix, is the antihelix in anatomy and the Rim, the inner rim, in the classics. The canal opening is the Wind Gate, the lobe the Hanging Pearl. Setting the two vocabularies side by side, as in the table below, is the Master's way of keeping readers from mixing them up, not a table found in the old books.

Vertically, the yearly verse names three parts of each ear, exactly the points in Figure 1. On the starting ear the top, middle and bottom are the Heavenly Wheel, the Heavenly City and the Heavenly Rim and Lobe. On the other ear they are the Heavenly Wheel, the Human Wheel and the Earthly Wheel facing the mouth. Popular physiognomy writing today simply calls the three parts of the rim the Heavenly, Human and Earthly Wheel.

Sách tướng tả một đôi tai thế nàoHow the classics describe the ears

Thiên Ngũ Quan của Thần Tướng Toàn Biên, quyển hạ, gói tiêu chuẩn của tai vào một câu: nhĩ tu yếu sắc tiên, cao tủng ư mi, luân quách hoàn thành, thiếp nhục đôn hậu, phong môn khoan đại, vị chi Thải Thính Quan thành. Dịch ý, tai trọn vẹn gồm năm điều:

The five features section in the last volume of the Complete Book of Spirit Physiognomy packs the standard for the ears into one sentence. In paraphrase, complete ears have five qualities:

  1. Sắc tươi. Màu tai sáng, không xỉn.
  2. Cao hơn mày. Đỉnh tai dựng cao quá đường lông mày.
  4. Thiếp nhục đôn hậu. Áp sát vào đầu, dày dặn.
  5. Phong môn khoan đại. Cửa tai rộng.
  1. Fresh colour. The ear looks bright, not dull.
  2. Above the brows. The top of the ear rises past the brow line.
  3. Complete rims. Outer and inner rim both clear and whole.
  4. Close and thick. Lying against the head, with substance.
  5. A wide Wind Gate. A wide ear opening.

The commentary quotes Guo Linzong: the ear is the sovereign and the brow the minister, and the sovereign should stand above the minister. That is why the books want the top of the ear above the brows. It also quotes the Guangjian collection: do not judge the ear by its size, first look for fresh colour, and a clear pale tone is best.

The Guangjian line is the one for beginners to remember: even in the old books, a big ear is not the first thing. The commentary goes on with many fortune verdicts tied to large ears, thick lobes, thin or pointed ears. This article leaves all of them out and keeps only the descriptions of shape. This is tradition for reference, not a scientific finding.

Tai cao thấp so với mày và mũiEar height against the brows and nose

Ear height is measured by landmarks, not a ruler: is the top of the ear above or below the brow line, is the bottom of the lobe above or below the base of the nose. In a frontal photo the ear is partly hidden by the cheeks and hair and shifts with every tilt of the head, so this is measured in a 90 degree profile.

Top: four landmarks in the profile of a male and a female face, showing the subject's right ear. Bottom: three ear heights against the brow and eye, simplified. The gold framed cell is the shape the old books describe.

How to measure: draw one horizontal through the brow line and one through the base of the nose, where the nose meets the upper lip. Note whether the top of the ear is above, level with, or below the brow line, and whether the bottom of the lobe is above or below the nose line. The head must be level with the eyes looking straight ahead, since a slight lift or drop of the chin already slides the ear against the brows in the photo.

Classical Western art has an "ideal" proportion right here, the naso-aural canon: the ear as long as the nose is high, measured from the root of the nose between the eyes to its base. Le and colleagues (2002) measured it in four groups of 60 young adults, one of them Vietnamese. Only one Vietnamese person, 1.7%, had an ear exactly as long as the nose. An ear longer than the nose was the dominant pattern in all three Asian groups, and the study records only three people, all in the Chinese group, with a nose longer than the ear.

For a face reader this means two things. First, an ear longer than the nose is ordinary among Vietnamese, so a lobe that ends below the nose base is normal. Second, an "ideal" that almost nobody fits cannot be a yardstick for praise or blame. The measurement only records where the ear sits and does not treat a departure from a canon as a flaw.

Vành tai, tai dày mỏng và dáng taiThe rims, ear thickness and shape

Complete rims means both helix and antihelix are clear and whole. In a profile the reader checks whether the outer edge rolls evenly from top to bottom, whether the inner ridge stands out in its Y shape, and whether the groove between them is clear. The books want the ear to have substance. Rim thickness is very hard to measure in a photo, so the measurement notes only whether the rim is well rolled or thin and flat.

Six right ear shapes in profile, simplified. The top row shows the rims, the bottom row the outline. The gold framed cell is the shape the old books describe, the others carry measurement notes only, no verdict.

One shape has its own name in the classics: the antihelix standing out beyond the outer rim, which the yearly verse calls the flying wheel and reversed rim. The verse reads this shape harshly, and the verdict is left out here. Round ears, long narrow ears and a slightly pointed top are variations of outline, which the measurement simply records.

Tai áp hay vểnhClose set or outstanding ears

The term for lying close in the standard sentence means pressed against the flesh, and the commentary glosses it as lying hidden. To see whether ears lie close or stand out, you need the frontal and the profile photo together: the frontal shows how far the rims stand out from the head, the profile whether the rim is clear or hidden.

Tai vểnh hơn mốc ấy thường do gờ đối luân gấp chưa đủ, khiến vành ngoài chìa ra, hoặc do lòng xoắn tai sâu.

Medicine has numbers for this. The ear usually sits less than 2 cm from the side of the head, at an angle under 25 degrees. Ears standing out further are mostly due to an under folded antihelix, which lets the outer rim project, or to a deep concha. The medical literature also notes that most prominent ears are anatomically normal. An outstanding ear is a shape, not a fault.

Dái tai: Thùy ChâuThe earlobe: the Hanging Pearl

The lobe draws the most questions in ear reading. The classics call it the Hanging Pearl and want it full and fresh, with lines describing a lobe that turns toward the mouth, as in the name of the yearly point for ages 12 to 14, the Earthly Wheel facing the mouth. The verdicts the old books attach to the lobe are not quoted here, and Master Ung Khiem does not read lifespan from the earlobe.

Dái tai dính hay rời không do một genLobe attachment is not a one gene trait

Biology textbooks long used the earlobe as an example of a single gene trait, with the free lobe dominant. Shaffer and colleagues (2017) studied the genomes of 74,660 people in four cohorts and found 49 genetic regions linked to lobe attachment, including EDAR and many genes involved in ear development. They concluded that lobe attachment is polygenic. The biologist John McDonald also shows that lobes do not fall into two clear types but vary continuously, the attachment point sitting anywhere from up near the cartilage to well below, and the family data he cites include parents who both have attached lobes with a child who has free lobes.

The shares differ widely between populations. In the Chinese cohort from Taizhou, 64.96% had attached lobes and only 3.12% free lobes, the reverse of the European American cohort. Rating also shapes the numbers, as in the Latin American cohort where 75.6% were scored partly attached. For Vietnamese readers the point to keep is that attached lobes are not rare, and not a defect.

Among the five qualities, fresh colour comes first, and the Guangjian collection puts colour ahead of size. The five features section also has the phrase that the ear may be even paler than the face, which the book treats as a fine sign. It also criticises coarse skin with a dark, dry tone, and the verdict attached is left out here.

Ear colour is the easiest thing to get wrong from a photo. The ear is thin and usually sits at the edge of the frame, far from the light, so warm lamps, hair shadow, backlight or beauty filters all change its colour. The Master notes ear colour only when the photo was taken in even natural light, and always compares the ear with the facial skin in the same photo, never across two photos.

Tai lớn dần theo tuổiEars grow with age

Ears do not stay the same for life. The surgical literature notes that by about six a healthy ear is almost adult sized. After that it keeps lengthening, slowly and steadily. In 1995 the British general practitioner James Heathcote and colleagues measured the left ear of 206 patients aged 30 to 93 and found ear length rising by 0.22 mm a year on average.

The two sample ears are drawn to the lengths for age 30 and age 90.

Sforza and colleagues (2009) measured the ears of 843 people aged 4 to 73 and likewise found every ear dimension larger in older people, male ears larger than female ears, and the width to length ratio falling with age, so ears grow longer more than wider. For ear reading this means today's ear is not the ear at twenty. The Master always notes the age at the time of the photo beside the ear measurements, and never compares a young person's ear with an older person's.

In a frontal photo the ear is just a narrow strip beside each cheek, as Figure 1 shows. Most of what this article measures needs the profile. The Three Readings page asks for two face photos: one frontal and one profile at 90 degrees.

  1. Vén tóc ra sau cả hai bên, để lộ trọn vành tai và dái tai. Tháo khuyên tai to, bỏ kính.
  2. Ảnh nghiêng quay hẳn 90 độ, máy ngang tầm tai, đầu thẳng, mắt nhìn ngang về phía trước.
  4. Tắt mọi bộ lọc làm đẹp và chế độ chân dung xóa phông, vì chúng làm mờ vành tai.
  5. Nếu muốn so hai tai, chụp thêm một ảnh nghiêng phía bên kia với đúng tư thế ấy.
  1. Pull the hair back on both sides to show the whole rim and lobe. Remove large earrings and glasses.
  2. For the profile, turn a full 90 degrees, camera at ear height, head level, eyes looking straight ahead.
  3. Natural light falling on the side being photographed, not against the light, no flash.
  4. Turn off beauty filters and portrait blur, which soften the ear rims.
  5. To compare both ears, take a second profile from the other side in exactly the same pose.

Thầy Ưng Khiêm đọc tướng tai thế nàoHow Master Ung Khiem reads the ears

Đo trên ảnh nghiêng, luận có sách, không phán thọMeasure in profile, interpret with sources, no lifespan verdicts

In the Three Readings book, the ear measurements are written apart: the ear top against the brow line, the lobe against the nose base, close set or outstanding, clear or thin rims, free or attached lobe, with the age at the time of the photo. The traditional reading is written separately, naming its source.

The ears are read with the other four features, the three zones and the twelve palaces, then set beside fingerprints and palm lines. The Master stresses a point only where all three arts agree.

The Master never pronounces on lifespan, illness or wealth from the ears or lobes. Ear reading is a mirror for understanding oneself, not a source of fear.

Hỏi đápQuestions

Tướng tai là gì?What is ear reading?

It is the part of physiognomy that reads the ears, the feature the classics call the Official of Hearing. The Complete Book of Spirit Physiognomy describes complete ears as fresh in colour, above the brows, with clear rims, close to the head, thick, with a wide opening. It is a tradition for reference, not science.

Tai cao hơn lông mày nghĩa là gì?What does an ear above the brows mean?

The classics want the top of the ear above the brow line, quoting Guo Linzong that the ear is the sovereign and the brow the minister. To check, measure on a 90 degree profile with the head level. Vietnamese ears are usually longer than the nose, and high or low ears are both normal shapes.

Dái tai dày, to có phải sống thọ không?Does a big thick earlobe mean a long life?

Master Ung Khiem does not read lifespan from the earlobe, and this article does not quote the old lines on it. What science has measured is that ears lengthen with age, by 0.22 mm a year on average according to Heathcote (1995), so older people tend to have longer ears than younger people.

Dái tai dính hay rời do đâu?What decides a free or attached earlobe?

Not a single gene, as old textbooks said. Shaffer and colleagues (2017) studied 74,660 people and found 49 associated genetic regions. In the Chinese cohort studied, nearly 65% had attached lobes, so it is a very common shape.

Tai vểnh có xấu không?Are outstanding ears a bad sign?

Sách tướng quý tai áp sát đầu. Về y học, tai thường cách đầu dưới 2 cm, góc dưới 25 độ, tai vểnh hơn thường do gờ đối luân gấp chưa đủ, và phần lớn tai vểnh vẫn có cấu trúc bình thường. Thầy chỉ ghi lại độ áp, không phán.

The classics prize ears that lie close. Medically, ears usually sit under 2 cm from the head at under 25 degrees, outstanding ears mostly come from an under folded antihelix, and most are anatomically normal. The Master only records the set, with no verdict.

Chụp ảnh thế nào để xem tướng tai?How should I photograph my ears?

Cần thêm một ảnh nghiêng 90 độ ngoài ảnh chính diện. Vén tóc để lộ trọn vành và dái tai, tháo khuyên to, máy ngang tầm tai, đầu thẳng, ánh sáng tự nhiên chiếu vào phía tai, tắt bộ lọc làm đẹp.

Add a 90 degree profile to the frontal photo. Pull the hair back to show the whole rim and lobe, remove large earrings, keep the camera at ear height and the head level, light the ear with natural light, and turn off beauty filters.
