Tướng miệng là gì, miệng nằm ở đâuWhat mouth reading is, where the mouth sits
Mouth reading is the part of physiognomy that looks at the mouth, the two lips, the corners and the philtrum, along with the points around them. The article on the five features gave the mouth one short passage. This is the mouth's own article, part by part: shape, upper and lower lips, corners, philtrum, teeth, and the twenty five yearly points around the mouth.
On the face map of the main page, the mouth stands on four layers at once. Among the five features it is the Official of Intake, the official of speech and intake. Among the four rivers, the mouth is the Huai. On the yearly chart it is the Water Star point at age 60. Among the three zones it sits in the middle of the lower zone, which runs from the philtrum to the chin.
To be clear from the start: modern science classes physiognomy as a pseudoscience, as face reading for beginners explains. The tradition here is cultural heritage for reference. For the mouth, though, science has measured a good deal about expression, age and make up, and those findings come later in the piece.
Các phần của miệng: tên tướng pháp, tên giải phẫuParts of the mouth: traditional and anatomical names
Before looking at shapes, each part needs its right name. Physiognomy and anatomy name the same places in two different ways. The drawing below sets them side by side, so both the old books and the science make sense.
Anatomy calls the philtrum a vertical groove in the middle of the upper lip, running from the nasal septum to the tubercle of the upper lip, bordered by two ridges called the philtral columns. It forms where the nasomedial and maxillary processes meet during embryonic development. The Law Lines at ages 56 and 57 lie in the area anatomy calls the nasolabial folds, the two skin folds that run from each side of the nose to the corners of the mouth.
Sách cổ tả miệng thế nàoHow the old books describe the mouth
Thần Tướng Toàn Biên không tả miệng ở một chỗ mà rải qua nhiều thiên: thiên Ngũ Quan, thiên Tứ Độc, thiên Ngũ Tinh Lục Diệu và bài thơ quyết đoán đi kèm, cùng bài ca lưu niên ở quyển trung. Đặt các thiên cạnh nhau mới thấy sách muốn một cái miệng thế nào. Bảng dưới dịch ý, câu chữ đã làm nhẹ, và ghi rõ phần phán mà bài lược đi.
The Complete Book of Spirit Physiognomy does not describe the mouth in one place but across several sections: the Five Features, the Four Rivers, the Five Stars and Six Luminaries with its verse of judgements, and the yearly verse in the middle volume. Only side by side do they show what the book wants of a mouth. The table paraphrases and softens the wording, and names the verdicts left out.
| ThiênSection | Sách tả miệng (dịch ý)What the book says (paraphrase) | Phần bài lược điLeft out here |
|---|---|---|
| Ngũ Quan, miệng là Xuất Nạp QuanFive Features, the Official of Intake | Miệng vuông và lớn, môi hồng, ngay ngắn, dày, khóe như cánh cung, mở ra thì lớn, khép lại thì nhỏ. Corners turning up without showing the teeth are called the bow. | Lời phán về nghèo hèn, cô độcVerdicts on poverty and loneliness |
| Tứ Độc, miệng là sông HoàiFour Rivers, the Huai | Miệng cần vuông rộng, hai môi che và đỡ nhau. Môi trên mỏng thì không che, môi dưới mỏng thì không đỡ.The mouth should be square and broad, the lips covering and supporting each other. A thin upper lip does not cover, a thin lower lip does not support.

Read together, the book wants five things of a mouth: square and wide, both lips moderately full and covering each other, corners curving slightly up, a clearly edged lip border, a deep philtrum. It also names other shapes, such as the blowing fire mouth with pursed, protruding lips, the small mouth with thin lips, corners drooping down, teeth shown when talking or laughing, each with a verdict. This piece keeps the names so you can recognise them in the books, and leaves out the verdicts.
Dáng miệng: vuông, cung, rộng, hẹpMouth shape: square, bow, wide, narrow
Dáng miệng xem khi hai môi khép tự nhiên. Có ba điều: đường viền môi vuông hay tròn, khóe miệng thế nào, và bề ngang miệng so với bề ngang cánh mũi. Hình dưới vẽ sáu dáng giản lược, mỗi ô có chân mũi và hai nét chấm xanh đánh dấu bề ngang cánh mũi để mắt so được.
Mouth shape is read with the lips closed naturally. Three things matter: whether the outline is square or round, what the corners do, and the mouth width against the width of the nose. The drawing shows six simplified shapes, each with the base of the nose and two blue dotted lines marking the nose width for comparison.
- Square mouth. A squared lip outline with four clear corners, like the square written character for four. The books call it complete.
- Upturned bow. Corners curving up like a bow lying on its back, closing without showing the teeth. The books call this the bow.
- Wide mouth. Clearly wider than the nose. The books favour a large, broad mouth and call a wide mouth with bowed corners a sea mouth.
- Narrow, small and thin, blowing fire. A mouth near the nose width, a small mouth with thin lips, lips pursed forward as if blowing on a fire. The books name them with verdicts, left out here.
Mouth width is where measurement speaks most clearly. Classical Western art set an "ideal" of a mouth one and a half times the nose width. Jayaratne and colleagues (2012) measured 3D photographs of 103 young adults in Hong Kong, 51 men and 52 women: only 8.7% fitted that canon, and most had mouths narrower than one and a half noses, 92.2% of men and 82.7% of women. So the measurement records the number and never treats a narrower mouth as a flaw.
Môi trên, môi dưới: che và đỡUpper and lower lips: lid and base
The book's best line on the lips is in the Four Rivers section: the mouth is the Huai, the lips must cover and support each other, a thin upper lip does not cover, a thin lower lip does not support. The book pictures the upper lip as a lid and the lower as a base. So the tradition does not ask whether lips are full or thin in general, but whether the two match.
The book also wants the lips red, even, with a clearly edged border. Lip colour is what a photo gets wrong most easily: warm light, filters and lipstick all change it. So Master Ung Khiem records lip colour only from a photo without lipstick, in natural light.
Khóe miệng lên, ngang, xuốngMouth corners: up, level, down
Mouth corners are read with one simple step: draw a horizontal line through the middle of the lip line, then see whether both corners sit above, on or below it. The books praise corners curving up like a bow, and name corners drooping down with a verdict, left out here.
The corners are where expression shows most. Anatomy records that the zygomaticus major draws the angle of the mouth up and back to smile, while the depressor anguli oris pulls the corner down, as in a frown. For one and the same person, the corners already differ between smiling, resting and tiredness. So the corners are measured only on a relaxed face with the lips closed naturally.
The philtrum is the groove from the base of the nose to the upper lip. On the yearly chart it is the Philtrum point at age 51, the first point of the lower zone. The Five Stars section wants a deep philtrum. The books also name a philtrum slanting to one side, a shallow flat one, one crossed by lines, each with a verdict.
The old books tie many philtrum shapes to children and lifespan. This piece leaves those lines out, and Master Ung Khiem does not read such things from the philtrum. It is treated as a point to measure and to place on the yearly chart, not a source of verdicts.
Philtrum length is a measurement that changes with age. Iblher, Stark and Penna (2012) ran three studies: perioral proportions on 182 standardised photographs, MRI measurements of 30 women aged 20 to 35 and 30 women aged 65 to 80, and histology of the upper lip in 20 people. All three found a significant lengthening of the upper lip with age: more skin in the upper lip, less visible red lip, the lip redistributing from thickness to length without losing volume.
For measurement this means: the same person has a longer philtrum and thinner red lip at sixty than at twenty. Comparing the philtrum of two people of different ages, or against a model drawing, is unfair. The Master records philtrum length with the age at the time of the photo, and compares only photos of the same person across the years.
Răng trong sách tướngTeeth in the old books
The books speak of teeth, but briefly. The Five Stars section wants the mouth and teeth even. A passage in the middle volume describes teeth that are even, close set and white as frost. The old books frown on teeth showing when talking or laughing, with a verdict left out here.
Today teeth can be straightened, capped and whitened, and a smile showing teeth is simply a smile. Reading photos are taken with a relaxed face and closed lips, so the Three Readings book does not measure the teeth.
Hai mươi lăm tuổi quanh miệngTwenty five yearly points around the mouth
The lower zone carries the yearly chart from age 51 to 75, and most of those ages surround the mouth. Starting at the philtrum at 51, the path goes to both sides of the philtrum, down the law lines, out to the tiger ears near the ears, back to the water star at the mouth at 60, then down to the receiving fluid, round the lower lip and chin to the earth pavilion at 71, then to the servant points and the two jaw bones. Ages are counted the traditional way.

The Servants palace of the twelve palaces also sits here, which the main page describes as: "Both sides of the chin. Staff and helpers." The article on the hundred year chart has a box for your birth year to find this year's point.
Đo miệng trên ảnh thế nàoHow to measure the mouth on a photo
The mouth changes more than any other feature between two photos of the same person. For the measurements to mean anything, the photo must follow a fixed setup, and each number must note how it was taken.
- Đo bề ngang miệng giữa hai khóe (a) và bề ngang cánh mũi (b), rồi lấy a chia b.
- Đo nhân trung từ chân vách mũi tới viền môi trên (c), đo độ dày môi trên (d) và môi dưới (e) ở đường giữa.
- Kẻ đường nối hai khóe miệng, so với điểm giữa đường khép môi để ghi khóe lên, ngang hay xuống.
- Ghi tuổi lúc chụp. Muốn so qua các năm, chỉ so ảnh của chính người ấy, chụp cùng một lối.
- Frontal photo, camera at eye level, face relaxed, lips closed naturally, not pressed, not smiling.
- Ideally one photo without lipstick or lip make up, in natural light. If lipstick is worn, note it so lip height and colour are read correctly.
- Measure the mouth width between the corners (a) and the nose width (b), then divide a by b.
- Measure the philtrum from the base of the nasal septum to the upper lip border (c), and the upper (d) and lower (e) lip heights on the centre line.
- Draw the line joining the corners and compare it with the middle of the lip line to record corners up, level or down.
- Record the age at the time. To compare over the years, compare only photos of the same person taken the same way.
Khoa học nói gì về miệngWhat science says about the mouth
Science does not accept reading character from mouth shape. But the mouth is where science says most about expression and about how the face changes over the years. The results below show why measuring the mouth needs more care than any other feature.
Miệng là nơi người ta đọc cảm xúcThe mouth is where emotions are read
Carbon (2020) showed 41 people aged 18 to 87 twelve faces with six expressions: angry, disgusted, fearful, happy, neutral and sad, with and without a mask over the lower face. With the mouth covered, viewers read emotions less accurately and with much less confidence. Happy, sad and angry faces were often read as neutral.
Gương mặt không cười vẫn gợi ấn tượngA face at rest still gives an impression
Said, Sebe and Todorov (2009) had 66 neutral faces rated on 14 traits, then ran the photos through a classifier trained to detect expressions. Neutral faces rated positively tended to resemble happiness in structure, faces seen as threatening resembled anger. Oosterhof and Todorov (2008) explain this as an overgeneralisation of how we read expressions onto faces at rest, giving judgments that are rapid, yet not necessarily accurate.
The Master sets two things side by side for reference: the books favour corners curving up, and the smile is what lifts the corners. That may explain why people then and now feel at ease with slightly upturned corners, but it is an impression, not character.
Miệng đổi theo tuổi và thói quenThe mouth changes with age and habit
Besides the longer upper lip, Iblher and colleagues (2012) recorded less pouting, an inward turning of the red lip and a sagging of the lip with age. The nasolabial folds, which physiognomy calls the law lines, may grow in length and depth with age and are commonly called smile lines. Skin wrinkling is promoted by habitual facial expressions, ageing, sun damage and other factors. The vertical lines beside the chin appear as the ligaments around the mouth and chin relax with age.
Son môi đổi ấn tượngLipstick changes the impression
Etcoff and colleagues (2011) photographed 25 women aged 20 to 50 in four looks, bare faced and three make up styles from light to heavy, and had them rated at 250 milliseconds or with unlimited time. Make up darkened the eyes and lips and raised their contrast with the skin. At a glance, make up raised all four ratings: attractiveness, competence, likeability and trustworthiness. With longer looking, attractiveness and competence stayed higher, while likeability and trustworthiness varied with the look.
Russell, Kramer and Jones (2017) measured 151 male and female faces in three age groups: colour contrast around the brows, eyes and lips declined with age in women and men alike, while the difference between the sexes held throughout adult life. Lip colour in a photo therefore shifts with age and with lipstick, so the measurement always notes a natural photo or lipstick.
Thầy Ưng Khiêm đọc tướng miệng thế nàoHow Master Ung Khiem reads the mouth
In the Three Readings book, the mouth measurements are written apart: mouth width against the nose, upper and lower lip heights, corners up, level or down, and the philtrum's length, depth and line. Each number notes a natural photo or lipstick, a relaxed or smiling face, and the age at the time.
The interpretation is written separately, naming the section of the Complete Book it follows. The mouth is read with the lower zone and yearly points 51 to 75, then set beside fingerprints and palm lines. The Master stresses a point only where all three arts agree.
The Master never pronounces on children or lifespan from the philtrum, nor on wealth from the lips, whatever the old books say. The mouth is a mirror for understanding oneself, not a source of fear.

Hỏi đápQuestions
Tướng miệng là gì?What is mouth reading?
Là phần nhân tướng học xem dáng miệng, hai môi, khóe miệng và nhân trung. Thần Tướng Toàn Biên gọi miệng là Xuất Nạp Quan, sông Hoài, Thủy Tinh, và tả miệng trọn vẹn là vuông rộng, môi hồng dày, khóe cong lên như cánh cung. Đây là tướng pháp để tham khảo.
It is the part of physiognomy that reads mouth shape, the lips, the corners and the philtrum. The Complete Book of Spirit Physiognomy calls the mouth the Official of Intake, the Huai river and the Water Star, and describes a complete mouth as square and wide, with red full lips and corners curving up like a bow. It is a tradition for reference.
Môi dày hay môi mỏng thì tốt?Are full or thin lips better?
The books do not ask full or thin in general, but want the lips to cover and support each other: a thin upper lip does not cover, a thin lower lip does not support. Lips also thin with age and look fuller with lipstick, so the measurement notes age and whether lipstick was worn.
Khóe miệng cong lên hay trễ xuống nói gì?What do upturned or drooping corners mean?
The books praise corners curving up like a bow and pass a verdict on drooping ones, left out here. Corners change with expression and sag with age, so they are measured only on a relaxed face. Slightly upturned corners give a pleasant impression, but that is an impression, not character.
Nhân trung dài, sâu có ý nghĩa gì?What does a long, deep philtrum mean?
The Five Stars section wants a deep philtrum, and it is the point for age 51 on the yearly chart. The old books tie it to children and lifespan, which this piece leaves out. Research shows the upper lip lengthens with age, so philtrum length is always measured with the age at the time.
Những tuổi nào nằm quanh miệng?Which ages sit around the mouth?
Theo bảng lưu niên của trang tổng, tuổi 51 ở nhân trung, 52 tới 57 ở hai bên nhân trung và pháp lệnh, 58 và 59 ở hổ nhĩ, 60 ở thủy tinh là miệng, 61 ở thừa tương dưới môi, rồi 62 tới 75 vòng quanh môi dưới, cằm và hàm. Mặt nữ đổi bên như soi gương.
On the main page yearly chart, 51 is the philtrum, 52 to 57 the sides of the philtrum and the law lines, 58 and 59 the tiger ears, 60 the water star at the mouth, 61 the receiving fluid under the lip, and 62 to 75 round the lower lip, chin and jaw. The female face is mirrored.
Does lipstick distort a mouth reading?
Lipstick changes lip colour and contrast, and make up shifts the impressions viewers report. So the measurement always notes a natural photo or lipstick, and ideally there is one photo without lipstick in natural light. Science does not accept reading character from lip shape.
