Ngũ quan: tai, mày, mắt, mũi, miệng trong nhân tướng họcThe five features: ears, brows, eyes, nose and mouth in face reading

This overview walks through all five on a male and a female face: what to look at, how the old books describe each, where they sit among the three zones and twelve palaces, and what science has measured.

The five features of face reading are the ears, brows, eyes, nose and mouth, each named as an official: the ears are the Official of Hearing, the brows of Longevity, the eyes of Inspection, the nose of Judgement, the mouth of Intake. A reader looks at shape, left right balance and how each fits the whole face. It is a tradition for reference, not a method science accepts for judging character.

Ngũ quan là gìWhat the five features are

Wu guan literally means five officials. In Chinese physiognomy they are five parts of the face: the ears, eyebrows, eyes, nose and mouth. The last volume of the Complete Book of Spirit Physiognomy has a section on them, giving each part an office and describing the shape the book considers complete.

The five features are the fourth of the seven layers introduced in face reading for beginners. This is the overview of the five features cluster: broad across all five, brief on each. Separate articles on each feature will go deeper.

The yearly column comes from the hundred year chart on the main page, with ages counted the traditional way. The nose stage from 41 to 50 includes the cheekbones at 46 and 47. The mouth is the Water Star point at 60, with most of ages 51 to 70 around the mouth and lower cheeks.

Official of Longevity is the name the books give the brows. This article, like Master Ung Khiem's readings, does not read lifespan from the brows or from any feature.

Nhìn gì ở từng quanWhat to look at in each feature

For all five, the reader looks at three things before interpreting: the shape of the feature, whether both sides match, and whether it fits the whole face. The books never grade a feature in isolation. The same nose on a broad or a narrow face is read differently.

The descriptions below paraphrase the five features section of the Complete Book of Spirit Physiognomy, last volume, softened and without its fortune verdicts. This is tradition for reference, not a scientific finding.

Tai, Thải Thính QuanEars, the Official of Hearing

What to look at: the top of the ear against the brow line, whether the inner and outer rims are clear, whether the ear lies close to the head or sticks out, the lobe, and whether both ears sit at the same height. A 90 degree profile shows the ear best.

Sách tả tai trọn vẹn là tai sắc tươi, cao hơn lông mày, vành tai đầy đủ, áp sát vào đầu, dày dặn, cửa tai rộng. Trên sơ đồ lưu niên, tuổi 1 tới 14 nằm ở hai tai, nam khởi từ tai trái, nữ khởi từ tai phải.

The books describe a complete ear as fresh in colour, higher than the brows, with full rims, lying close to the head, thick, with a wide opening. On the yearly chart, ages 1 to 14 sit on the ears, men starting from the left ear, women from the right.

Mày, Bảo Thọ QuanBrows, the Official of Longevity

Nhìn gì: chiều dài của mày so với mắt, dáng cong hay thẳng, dày hay thưa, khoảng cách giữa hai đầu mày, và khoảng cách từ mày xuống mắt. Mày là quan dễ đổi nhất trên ảnh vì có thể tỉa, kẻ, xăm, nên phần đo luôn ghi mày còn tự nhiên hay đã sửa.

What to look at: brow length against the eye, curved or straight, thick or sparse, the gap between the brow heads, and the gap from brow to eye. The brows change most easily in a photo, since they can be plucked, pencilled or tattooed, so the measurements always note whether they are natural.

The books describe complete brows as broad, clear and long, the two parting towards the temples, sometimes shaped like a new moon, full from head to tail, set high. Another summary line wants the brows tight, not scattered. The brows are the Siblings palace among the twelve palaces and hold ages 31 to 34 on the yearly chart.

Mắt, Giám Sát QuanEyes, the Official of Inspection

What to look at: long or round, outer corners tilting up, level or down, the gap between the eyes against the length of one eye, the lids, the iris and white, and whether both eyes match. Light, glasses, make up and one short night all change the eyes in a photo.

Sách tả mắt trọn vẹn là ẩn tàng không lộ, lòng đen lòng trắng phân minh, con ngươi ngay ngắn, có ánh sáng, hoặc dài và nhỏ. Quanh mắt có ba cung: Điền Trạch ở mí trên, Nam Nữ ở dưới mắt, Thê Thiếp ở đuôi mắt. Mắt giữ tuổi 35 tới 40 trên sơ đồ lưu niên.

The books describe complete eyes as calm and not bulging, with clear black and white, a steady pupil, bright, or long and fine. Three palaces surround the eyes: Property on the upper lid, Children below the eye, Spouse at the outer corner. The eyes hold ages 35 to 40 on the yearly chart.

Mũi, Thẩm Biện QuanNose, the Official of Judgement

What to look at: a straight or off centre bridge, a high or low nose root between the eyes, the tip, the wings, and nose length against the middle zone. The nose is the master peak of the five mountains, so the books always read it with the forehead, chin and cheekbones.

Sách tả mũi trọn vẹn là sống mũi ngay thẳng, ấn đường phẳng rộng, sơn căn nối liền ấn đường, phần giữa sống mũi cao, chóp mũi tròn, dáng như túi mật treo hoặc như ống trúc cắt ngang, sắc vàng sáng. Trên mũi có cung Tật Ách ở sơn căn và cung Tài Bạch ở chóp mũi. Mũi giữ tuổi 41 tới 50.

The books describe a complete nose as straight in the bridge, with a flat wide Seal Hall, a nose root joining it, a high mid bridge, a round tip, shaped like a hanging gall bladder or a cut bamboo tube, bright yellow in tone. The nose holds the Health palace at its root and the Wealth palace at its tip, and ages 41 to 50.

Miệng, Xuất Nạp QuanMouth, the Official of Intake

What to look at: mouth width against the nose, the thickness of the upper and lower lips, corners slightly up or down, whether the lips close, and whether both sides match. Smiling, talking or pressing the lips changes the mouth most, so a reading photo needs a relaxed face.

The books describe a complete mouth as square and wide, with red, even, full lips, corners curving up like a bow, wide when open and neat when closed. The mouth sits in the lower zone and is the Water Star point at age 60 on the yearly chart.

The section also has a four line summary: tight brows, a straight nose, ears high with clear rims, a wide mouth with corners curving up like a bow. Its final line pronounces on fortune in old age, and is left out here.

Ngũ quan, ngũ tạng và ngũ hànhThe five features, five organs and five elements

Bảng tương ứng của y học cổ truyền lại xếp can thuộc Mộc, tâm thuộc Hỏa, tỳ thuộc Thổ, phế thuộc Kim, thận thuộc Thủy.

The term five officials comes from early medical texts. The Five Readings and Five Messengers chapter of the Lingshu calls the nose the official of the lung, the eyes of the liver, the lips and mouth of the spleen, the tongue of the heart, and the ears of the kidney. Traditional Chinese medicine in turn pairs the liver with Wood, heart with Fire, spleen with Earth, lung with Metal, kidney with Water.

Side by side the two lists differ: the medical five include the tongue, the physiognomy five include the brows. These correspondences belong to the culture of early medicine, cited here to show where physiognomy borrowed the term. The article does not use them to infer illness. For health questions, please see a doctor.

Ngũ quan trong tam đình và mười hai cungThe features among the three zones and twelve palaces

The features do not stand alone but sit on the other map layers of the face. On the main page map, the upper zone runs from the hairline to the brows, the middle from the brows to the nose tip, the lower from the philtrum to the chin. The brows lie right on the border of the upper and middle zones, the ears, eyes and nose in the middle zone, the mouth in the lower zone.

Among the twelve palaces, the brows, eyes and nose are where palaces crowd most. The brows are the Siblings palace. Around the eyes are Property, Children and Spouse. Between the brow heads is the Life palace at the Seal Hall. The nose holds Health and Wealth. The ears and mouth coincide with none of the twelve palaces on the main page map, and the Servants palace sits on both sides of the chin, below the mouth.

The meaning of each palace is in face reading for beginners. The point here is that one feature carries several layers: the eyes are the Official of Inspection, the Yellow River of the four rivers, host to three palaces and six yearly points. Seasoned readers stack these layers rather than read each alone.

Cân đối và tương xứng: đo thế nàoBalance and proportion: how to measure

The books often speak of balance and proportion. To keep the measurement objective, four distances can be taken on a frontal photo: the length of one eye, the gap between the eyes, the width of the nose and the width of the mouth. Classical Western art once set "ideal" ratios between them.

Jayaratne and colleagues (2012) measured 3D photographs of 103 young adults in southern China, 51 men and 52 women, with typical faces. The canon that the gap between the eyes equals nose width fitted 19.4% of people, the canon that the mouth is one and a half times the nose fitted 8.7%. The canon of three equal face thirds, very close to the three zones, and the canon that the eye gap equals one eye fitted no one.

Four measurements on a male and a female face, and the share of people fitting each "ideal" canon, from Jayaratne and colleagues (2012). The two model drawings do not fit those canons either.

The lesson for readers: balance is relative. Most real faces fit no ideal canon, so the measurements record the numbers and compare the two sides, without treating a departure from a canon as a flaw.

So hai bên mặtComparing the two sides

Cách so: kẻ trục giữa qua ấn đường, sống mũi, nhân trung, rồi kẻ bốn đường ngang qua đầu mày, khóe mắt, cánh mũi và khóe miệng.

How to compare: draw a centre line through the Seal Hall, nose and philtrum, then four horizontal lines through the brow heads, eye corners, nose wings and mouth corners. Check whether both sides are level and each feature sits the same distance from the centre. The photo must be straight, camera at eye level, since a slight head tilt already skews the lines.

Vì vậy Thầy chỉ so hai bên trên ảnh thật.

Human faces are not perfectly symmetric, and morphology research finds a systematic left right difference in most people. Some apps join mirrored half faces to show "the true face". Perrett and colleagues (1999) showed this creates features that do not exist: a nose bent slightly to one side becomes too large or too small depending on which half is mirrored. So the Master compares the sides only on a real photo.

Khoa học nói gì về mắt, mày và ấn tượngWhat science says about eyes, brows and impressions

First, to be clear: modern science classes physiognomy as a pseudoscience because its claims are unsupported. The tradition in this article is cultural heritage for reference. Psychology, however, has serious research on how people look at faces, and some results touch the five features directly.

Mắt nhìn vào vùng mắt trướcWe look to the eyes first

Peterson and Eckstein (2012) note that people viewing a face often look towards the eyes. They showed that where people fixate when judging identity, gender or emotion is where those tasks are done best, and the paper's title places the optimal point just below the eyes.

Lông mày quan trọng hơn ta tưởngBrows matter more than we think

Sadr, Jarudi and Sinha (2003) showed 18 people 50 celebrity faces in three versions: original, eyebrows removed, eyes removed. Relative to the faces recognised in the originals, viewers identified 55.8% without eyes but only 46.3% without eyebrows. The authors concluded that eyebrows play an important role in face recognition.

Right: data from Sadr, Jarudi and Sinha (2003).

These results concern recognising who someone is, and say nothing about character or fate. They do not prove physiognomy right. On impressions, Willis and Todorov (2006) showed that after just 100 milliseconds of seeing an unfamiliar face, people already judge likeability, trustworthiness and competence, and longer viewing mainly raises their confidence. Fast is not accurate: face reading for beginners cites the studies showing character judgments from faces are poor.

Thầy Ưng Khiêm đọc ngũ quan thế nàoHow Master Ung Khiem reads the five features

Đo trước, luận sau, không đọc một quan riêng lẻMeasure first, interpret after, never one feature alone

In the Three Readings book, the measurements of the five features are written apart: size and position, balance of the two sides, proportion to the face, the zone each sits in, whether the photo was retouched. The traditional reading is written separately, naming its source.

The features are read with the three zones, twelve palaces and yearly points, then set beside fingerprints and palm lines. The Master stresses a point only where all three arts agree.

The Master never pronounces on lifespan, illness or wealth from the features. The face is a mirror for understanding oneself, not a source of fear.

Hỏi đápQuestions

Ngũ quan là gì?What are the five features?

They are five parts of the face that physiognomy calls five officials: ears, eyebrows, eyes, nose and mouth. The Complete Book of Spirit Physiognomy has a section describing the complete shape of each. It is a tradition for reference.

Tên năm vị quan là gì?What are the five official titles?

The ears are the Official of Hearing, the brows of Longevity, the eyes of Inspection, the nose of Judgement, and the mouth of Intake, the official of speech.

Ngũ quan ứng với ngũ hành thế nào?How do the features relate to the five elements?

The Lingshu pairs the eyes with the liver, tongue with the heart, lips and mouth with the spleen, nose with the lung, ears with the kidney, and traditional medicine pairs those organs with Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. The medical list has the tongue instead of the brows. These are old correspondences, not a way to infer illness.

Ngũ quan nằm ở đâu trong tam đình?Where do the features sit among the three zones?

The brows lie on the border of the upper and middle zones. The ears, eyes and nose sit in the middle zone, the mouth in the lower zone. The brows, eyes and nose also host the most of the twelve palaces.

Is there an ideal proportion for the features?

Measuring 103 faces precisely, Jayaratne and colleagues (2012) found the classical canons rarely fit: an eye gap equal to nose width held for 19.4% of people, three equal face thirds for no one. Balance is relative.

Can the features reveal character or health?

No. Science classes physiognomy as a pseudoscience. Research shows the eyes and brows matter for recognising who someone is, not for reading character, and health needs a doctor. The Master uses the features for reference and self understanding.
