Lịch sử vân tay: từ chín dạng của Purkyně tới công thức Henry và hệ VucetichHistory of fingerprints: from Purkyně's nine types to the Henry formula and the Vucetich system

People sealed contracts with their fingers long ago, but prints were first sorted into types only in 1823, and a way to file thousands of cards and find one person came only at the end of the nineteenth century. This piece walks through each classification system, with drawings and a source for every date.

The history of fingerprints has three stages. In China and elsewhere people pressed their fingers onto contracts to confirm them. From 1684 anatomists described the ridges, and in 1823 Purkyně sorted fingertip patterns into nine types. At the end of the nineteenth century Herschel, Faulds and Galton brought prints into personal identification, and two filing systems were born: the Henry system in British India and the Vucetich system in Argentina. From the 1980s, AFIS machines gradually replaced the card cabinets.

Vì sao vân tay cần được phân loạiWhy fingerprints had to be classified

Knowing that every print is different is only half the story. The other half is finding one person among thousands of cards. Without a classification you compare card after card. With one you open a single drawer. In British India, according to Wikipedia, Azizul Haque's filing method cut the time to trace a person from about an hour under the anthropometric method to about five minutes.

The article What is dermatoglyphics touched on a few milestones. This piece goes into the classification story itself: who sorted prints into how many types, by what rule, and why the world now uses the eight types this page uses.

Dấu tay trên văn khế cổFingerprints on ancient contracts

The Fingerprint Sourcebook of the US National Institute of Justice (NIJ) records that under the Qin dynasty, 221 to 206 BC, a text on investigating burglaries treated handprints as evidence. The same source says that from 221 BC to AD 220 the Chinese pressed fingerprints into clay seals next to the writer's name to authenticate documents.

Wikipedia adds that officials in ancient China authenticated state documents with their fingerprints. Before 851 the Arab merchant Abu Zayd Hasan saw Chinese merchants using fingerprints to authenticate loans. Wikipedia also says that around 200 BC written contracts in Babylon were signed with fingerprints, and prints are found on ancient clay tablets, seals and pottery.

These marks show that people used fingerprints to sign and to witness. Sorting ridges into types by a clear rule is something Wikipedia dates to 1823, with the work of Purkyně.

Các nhà giải phẫu nhìn gờ vânThe anatomists look at the ridges

Năm 1685, Govard Bidloo in sách giải phẫu có hình chi tiết gờ vân.

According to NIJ, in 1684 the English physician Nehemiah Grew gave the first detailed description of the skin ridges of the hand in a paper in the Royal Society's Philosophical Transactions. In 1685 Govard Bidloo published an anatomy book with detailed drawings of the ridges.

The Bologna anatomy professor Marcello Malpighi noted ridges, spirals and loops in fingerprints. Wikipedia gives 1686, NIJ dates his work to 1687. The two sources differ by a year, and both are given here.

In 1788 the German anatomist Johann Christoph Andreas Mayer wrote a line NIJ quotes: the arrangement of skin ridges is never duplicated in two persons, though some people are more alike than others. Wikipedia calls him the first European to conclude that fingerprints are unique.

Purkyně năm 1823: chín dạng đầu tiênPurkyně in 1823: the first nine types

Jan Evangelista Purkyně, in German usually Johannes Purkinje, lived from 1787 to 1869 and taught at the University of Breslau. In 1823, in a thesis NIJ renders as Commentary on the Physiological Examination of the Organs of Vision and the Cutaneous System, he sorted fingertip patterns into nine types and named each one. Wikipedia treats that year as the start of the scientific study of papillary ridges.

Purkyně's nine types in the order NIJ lists them: transverse curve, central longitudinal stria, oblique stripe, oblique loop, almond whorl, spiral whorl, ellipse, circle, double whorl. Simplified drawings based on the names, not copies of the original plates.

Purkyně only described and named the patterns, he did not use them to identify people. But the idea of sorting by the shape of the core, a transverse curve, a loop or a closed circuit, is the ground every later system was built on. Galton's 1892 book sets aside a chapter to discuss Purkyně's divisions.

Herschel và Faulds: ai là người đầu tiênHerschel and Faulds: who came first

In 1858 William Herschel, a British official at Jangipur in Bengal, had Rajyadhar Konai put his handprint on a contract. NIJ calls it the first official use of friction ridge skin by a European. In 1877, in what is called the Hooghly letter, Herschel proposed wider use of fingerprints.

Henry Faulds was a Scottish medical missionary who ran the Tsukiji hospital in Tokyo. According to Wikipedia, he became interested in prints after seeing potters' fingermarks on ancient shards at a dig. On 16 February 1880 he wrote to Charles Darwin that prints were unique and classifiable. In October that year he sent a paper to Nature with two examples of tracing people by prints: greasy marks on a glass and sooty marks on a wall.

The following month Herschel wrote to Nature saying he had long used fingerprints in India. That set off a dispute over who came first. The table below sets the two sides next to each other.

Wikipedia adds two notable details. First, Faulds offered the idea to Scotland Yard in 1886 but was turned away, largely because he lacked evidence that prints are durable, unique and classifiable. Second, Faulds's idea reached Galton through Darwin, and Galton did not credit him. In his 1892 book Galton stresses Herschel's regular and official use of prints in Bengal for more than a quarter of a century.

The fairest reading separates two things: Herschel used prints in practice earlier, Faulds published first on using prints to trace whoever left a mark. Neither is wrong, they answer two different questions.

Galton năm 1892: ba lớp và điểm chi tiếtGalton in 1892: three classes and minutiae

Francis Galton, the English scientist, lectured on fingerprints at the Royal Institution in 1888, then published three books: Finger Prints in 1892, Decipherment of Blurred Finger Prints in 1893 and Fingerprint Directories in 1895. NIJ credits him with establishing that ridges are unique and persistent.

Galton put every print into three classes. In his words, arches have no pattern space, the ridges simply broaden as they cross the bulb of the finger. Loops have a system of ridges that bends back on itself, with no ridge turning a complete circle. Whorls cover every case where at least one ridge turns a complete circle. He wrote the classes as A, L and W and, according to NIJ, filed cards by the letters of the right index, middle and ring fingers, then the same three on the left.

Galton's most lasting contribution sits in the smallest detail. He called them minutiae, the peculiarities of each ridge: where it divides in two, where it joins another, where it divides and reunites to enclose a small space, where it begins or ends, and ridges so short they form islands. Forensic science later called them Galton details. Almost a century later, these same points became what AFIS machines compare.

Hệ Henry: Henry, Haque và BoseThe Henry system: Henry, Haque and Bose

Edward Henry became Inspector General of Police of Bengal on 2 April 1891. According to NIJ, in 1894 he worked with Galton on a way to classify prints, and with the help of two Indian police officers, Azizul Haque and Hem Chandra Bose, the Henry system was developed. In March 1897 the government of British India made it the official method of criminal identification. In 1900 fingerprints fully replaced anthropometry there.

In 1901 Henry moved to Scotland Yard as Assistant Commissioner for crime, and on 1 July that year set up the Metropolitan Police Fingerprint Bureau. From there the Henry system followed British policing across the English speaking world.

Công thức phân loại chínhThe primary classification formula

Mười ngón được đánh số từ 1 tới 10, bắt đầu từ ngón cái tay phải, kết thúc ở ngón út tay trái. Ngón nào mang vân xoáy thì được một số điểm: số 1 và số 2 được 16, số 3 và số 4 được 8, số 5 và số 6 được 4, số 7 và số 8 được 2, số 9 và số 10 được 1. Ngón không xoáy được 0. Cộng điểm các ngón số chẵn rồi thêm 1, đặt làm tử số. Cộng điểm các ngón số lẻ rồi thêm 1, đặt làm mẫu số. Kết quả đi từ 1 trên 1 tới 32 trên 32, tức 1024 nhóm, ứng với 1024 ô tủ phiếu xếp thành 32 hàng và 32 cột.

The ten fingers are numbered 1 to 10, starting at the right thumb and ending at the left little finger. A finger with a whorl scores points: numbers 1 and 2 score 16, 3 and 4 score 8, 5 and 6 score 4, 7 and 8 score 2, 9 and 10 score 1. A non whorl scores 0. Add the even fingers and 1 for the top of the fraction, the odd fingers and 1 for the bottom. Results run from 1 over 1 to 32 over 32, which is 1,024 groups, matching 1,024 pigeonholes in 32 rows and 32 columns.

The primary classification is only the first step. Inside each pigeonhole the Henry system subdivides by pattern letter, which NIJ lists as A for arch, T for tented arch, R for radial loop, U for ulnar loop and W for whorl, then by ridge counts. Wikipedia notes that Bose also improved the subclassification and devised a code for sending prints by telegraph.

Công của ai: Henry hay Haque và BoseWhose credit: Henry, or Haque and Bose

The system bears Henry's name, but Wikipedia credits Azizul Haque with the mathematical formula for sorting cards into 1,024 pigeonholes, and by 1897 he had gathered 7,000 sets of prints. Henry later said the idea came to him in a sudden flash on a train. The scholars Sodhi and Kaur propose calling it the Henry, Haque and Bose system, since the two Indians' share is still under acknowledged.

On the other side, Wikipedia also records that it was Henry who recommended both men to the British government for recognition. Haque was made Khan Bahadur in 1924 and received an honorarium of 5,000 rupees in 1926. The UK Fingerprint Society later set up a research award in the names of Haque and Bose.

Hệ Vucetich và vụ Rojas năm 1892The Vucetich system and the 1892 Rojas case

Năm 1904 ông in sách Dactiloscopía Comparada. Ông mất năm 1925.

Juan Vucetich was born on 20 July 1858 on the island of Hvar in Dalmatia, emigrated to Argentina in 1882 and worked for the La Plata police. In 1891, building on Galton's ideas, he began the first fingerprint files. According to NIJ he first called his system icnofalangométrica, finger track measurement, and in 1896 renamed it dactiloscopía, finger description. In 1904 he published Dactiloscopía Comparada. He died in 1925.

Ngón cái ghi bằng chữ A, I, E, V, bốn ngón còn lại ghi bằng số 1, 2, 3, 4.

The Vucetich system uses only four types: arch, internal loop, external loop and whorl. Thumbs are written A, I, E, V, the other fingers 1, 2, 3, 4. The right hand goes on top, the left hand below. An internal loop has its delta on the viewer's right of the print, an external loop on the left.

Vụ Rojas: vụ án mạng đầu tiên phá bằng vân tayThe Rojas case: the first murder solved by fingerprints

On 29 June 1892, in Necochea, Buenos Aires province, the two young children of Francisca Rojas were killed. She blamed a neighbour, who had an alibi. Inspector Eduardo Álvarez came from La Plata, trained by Vucetich in reading prints, found a brown mark on a bedroom door and identified it as a bloody fingerprint. He cut out the piece of wood, took Rojas's prints to compare, and they matched. Faced with the evidence, Rojas confessed and was convicted.

NIJ gọi đây là vụ án mạng đầu tiên được phá nhờ chứng cứ vân tay. Theo Wikipedia, sau vụ này Argentina thành nước đầu tiên bỏ phép đo nhân trắc, lấy vân tay làm hồ sơ tội phạm theo hệ Vucetich, hệ vẫn còn dùng ở Nam Mỹ.

NIJ calls it the first homicide solved by fingerprint evidence. According to Wikipedia, Argentina then became the first nation to replace anthropometry with fingerprint records under the Vucetich system, which is still used in South America.

Mốc năm có chỗ lệch nhẹ giữa các nguồn: Wikipedia trang Vucetich ghi ông bắt đầu lập phiếu năm 1891, trang Fingerprint ghi năm 1892. NIJ ghi vụ Rojas ở Buenos Aires, Wikipedia ghi rõ thị trấn Necochea thuộc tỉnh Buenos Aires, hai cách ghi không mâu thuẫn.

The sources differ slightly on dates: Wikipedia's Vucetich page says he began his files in 1891, the Fingerprint page says 1892. NIJ places the Rojas case in Buenos Aires, Wikipedia names the town of Necochea in Buenos Aires province, which is consistent.

The most confusing difference is how loops are named. Henry names them by the hand itself, so an ulnar loop is ulnar on either hand. Vucetich names them by the side of the delta on the print, so the same ulnar loop gets a different number on each hand. The figure below follows directly from the two definitions.

Cummins đặt tên ngành, vân tay rời đồn cảnh sátCummins names the field, prints leave the police station

By the early twentieth century, classifying prints was almost entirely police work. In 1926 Harold Cummins, an anatomist at Tulane University, coined the word dermatoglyphics for the study of skin ridges. In 1943 he and Charles Midlo published Finger Prints, Palms and Soles, which describes how the volar pads form in the fetus. From then on ridges were a subject for anatomy, genetics and medicine, not only identification.

Genetics, medicine and why prints cannot measure intelligence are covered in What is dermatoglyphics. This piece follows the classification branch.

Từ tủ phiếu tới máy AFISFrom card cabinets to AFIS

According to chapter 5 of NIJ, from 1965 the US NCIC system coded the ten fingers as a 20 character string, two characters per finger, for computer searches. By the early 1980s the last phase of automation began: AFIS, the Automated Fingerprint Identification System, no longer filed by pattern type but relied solely on minutiae extracted by computer. Wikipedia notes that the Henry system remained the basis of automated systems until the 1990s, then gave way to ridge flow classification.

The FBI states that from July 1999 it operated IAFIS. In February 2011 the IAFIS fingerprint matching segment was replaced by new technology in NGI, raising matching accuracy from 92 percent to over 99.6 percent.

The history comes full circle: today's machines do not need to know whether a finger is an arch or a whorl, they compare the forks, endings and islands Galton described in 1892.

Từ phân loại tới tám dạng trang này dùngFrom classification to the eight types used here

Machines do not need pattern types, but people still do: to read, to teach, to talk about a hand. The eight types used on the Three Readings page come straight from the Galton and Henry line: Galton's three classes, Henry's five secondary letters, then the whorl class split into plain whorl, central pocket loop, double loop and accidental as in the FBI forensic manual.

Thầy Ưng Khiêm đọc lịch sử này thế nàoHow Master Ung Khiem reads this history

Two centuries of classification leave one clear lesson: fingerprints were chosen to identify people because they are carried from the womb and never change. Galton proved it with data, and the Henry and Vucetich systems built a whole profession on it.

Vân tay là tầng tiên thiênFingerprints are the inborn layer

In Eastern physiognomy, fingerprints are carried from the womb and never change, so the Master reads them as the inborn layer of temperament. Palm lines change slowly over the years, the acquired layer. The complexion of the face shifts year by year. Only the three layers side by side make a portrait.

The counting in the book is real data, recorded in the classification line described above: each finger's pattern, ridge counts, the indices, the atd angle. The reading of character is classical physiognomy, for reflection and self understanding. The two are written apart so you always know which sentence is measured and which is interpreted.

Who first classified fingerprints?

Jan Evangelista Purkyně, in 1823, sorted fingertip patterns into nine types in his thesis at the University of Breslau. He described and named them but did not use them to identify people.

Was Herschel or Faulds first with fingerprints?

It depends on the question. Herschel used handprints on contracts in Bengal from 1858. Faulds was first to publish, in Nature in 1880, the use of prints to trace whoever left a mark.

Hệ phân loại Henry là gì?What is the Henry classification system?

A filing system for fingerprint cards built by Edward Henry, Azizul Haque and Hem Chandra Bose in British India, official from 1897. The primary classification is a fraction based on which fingers carry whorls, giving 1,024 groups.

Vụ án đầu tiên phá bằng vân tay là vụ nào?What was the first case solved by fingerprints?

The Francisca Rojas case in Necochea, Argentina, in 1892. Inspector Eduardo Álvarez, trained by Vucetich, matched a bloody print on a bedroom door to Rojas. NIJ calls it the first homicide solved by fingerprint evidence.

Hệ Vucetich khác hệ Henry thế nào?How does the Vucetich system differ from Henry?

Vucetich uses only four types, arch, internal loop, external loop and whorl, written A, I, E, V for thumbs and 1 to 4 for other fingers, right hand over left. Loops are named by the delta side on the print, while Henry names them by the hand.

Are fingerprints still classified by hand today?

Police searching is now largely done by machine. Since the early 1980s AFIS has matched prints by minutiae. Pattern types are still taught and used when people read prints, like the eight types on this page.
