Nhân tướng học khuôn mặt nhập môn: đọc một gương mặt qua bảy lớp bản đồFace reading for beginners: a face read through seven map layers

Tướng pháp phương Đông không đọc từng nét rời rạc. Người xem tướng lâu năm nhìn ba đình, năm núi, bốn sông, năm giác quan, mười hai cung, rồi mới tới khí sắc và tuổi trên mặt. Bài này đi đủ bảy lớp ấy trên một mặt nam và một mặt nữ, rồi đặt tướng pháp cạnh điều khoa học đã đo.Eastern physiognomy never reads one feature on its own. Seasoned readers look at the three zones, five mountains, four rivers, five features and twelve palaces before complexion and the age points. This piece walks through all seven layers on a male and a female face, then sets the tradition beside what science has measured.

Face reading, Chinese physiognomy, reads a person through face shape, features, zones and complexion. It is discussed in Chinese texts since the Xunzi and was systematised in the Complete Book of Spirit Physiognomy. Learners read in order: three zones, five mountains, four rivers, five features, twelve palaces, complexion, yearly points. It is a cultural heritage for reflection. Science shows face impressions form very fast but predict character poorly.

Nhân tướng học khuôn mặt là gìWhat face reading is

Face reading, which old Chinese texts call reading the face, interprets a person through face shape, features, zones and complexion. The Western word is physiognomy, from the Greek physis, nature, and gnomon, judge or interpreter.

Eastern physiognomy never judges from a single feature. It divides the face into stacked map layers: three vertical zones, five mountains, four rivers, five features, twelve palaces, complexion, and a hundred years of life spread over the face. The face map on the Three Readings page has every layer, point by point. This piece goes through them in order.

It must be said at the outset: modern science classes physiognomy as a pseudoscience, because its claims are not supported by evidence. The tradition in this piece is cultural heritage, cited for reflection and self understanding. A later section is devoted to what science has actually measured about impressions from faces.

Every drawing here sets a male face beside a female face. Left and right always belong to the subject: their left side sits on the right of the picture.

The convention comes from the classics themselves. The Complete Book of Spirit Physiognomy calls the left cheekbone Mount Tai and the right cheekbone Mount Hua. Tai is the eastern mountain, Hua the western one, so the book faces the subject south, with left as east and right as west. Someone looking at a photo sees it reversed.

The Three Readings page cross checks three works above all: the Complete Book of Spirit Physiognomy, Liuzhuang Physiognomy and Hemp Robed Divine Physiognomy. Where the books disagree, Master Ung Khiem states which version he follows.

Nhìn một khuôn mặt theo thứ tự nàoIn what order to read a face

Beginners point at a mole or a nose and ask whether it is good or bad. Seasoned readers do the opposite: the whole first, the details after, and no interpretation until every layer has been seen. The order below follows the layers of the face map on the main page.

Lớp 1: tam đình, ba tầng của khuôn mặtLayer 1: the three zones

The Complete Book of Spirit Physiognomy divides the face vertically: from the hairline to between the brows is the upper zone, from between the brows to the nose the middle zone, from the nose tip through the philtrum to the chin the lower zone. The book says three balanced zones mark a superior face.

  • Thượng đình. Từ chân tóc tới ngang mày. Chủ tiền vận, theo bảng lưu niên ứng khoảng 15 tới 30 tuổi: gốc gác, cha mẹ, học hành.
  • Trung đình. Từ ngang mày, sơn căn xuống tới chóp mũi. Chủ trung vận, khoảng 31 tới 50 tuổi: sự nghiệp, tiền của, sức lực.
  • Hạ đình. Từ nhân trung tới cằm. Chủ hậu vận, từ khoảng 51 tuổi trở đi: nhà cửa, con cháu, tuổi già.
  • Upper zone. Hairline to the brows. Early life, roughly ages 15 to 30 on the age chart: origins, parents, schooling.
  • Middle zone. Brows and nose bridge down to the nose tip. Middle life, roughly 31 to 50: career, money, strength.
  • Lower zone. Philtrum to the chin. Later life, from about 51 on: home, descendants, old age.

Muốn tự xem, đặt ảnh chính diện thẳng đứng, kẻ bốn đường ngang ở chân tóc, ngang mày, chóp mũi và chân cằm, rồi so ba đoạn.

To try it yourself, set a frontal photo upright, draw four horizontal lines at the hairline, the brows, the nose tip and the bottom of the chin, and compare the three segments. Fringes and shots from above or below distort the ratios, so the photo must be taken at eye level.

Lớp 2: ngũ nhạc, năm ngọn núiLayer 2: the five mountains

The five mountains borrow the names of China's five sacred peaks for the five high points of the face. The Complete Book of Spirit Physiognomy reads: left cheekbone Mount Tai, right cheekbone Mount Hua, forehead Mount Heng of the south, chin Mount Heng of the north, nose Mount Song. The nose is the master peak in the centre, which the texts want high and straight, attended by the other four.

The tradition reads the five mountains as a set rather than one by one. When forehead, chin and both cheekbones are full and in proportion with the nose, the mountains are said to attend each other. What the texts notice is one peak far higher or lower than the rest.

Lớp 3: tứ độc, bốn dòng sôngLayer 3: the four rivers

Mountains need rivers. The four rivers are the great waterways given to the four openings of the face: the ears are the Yangtze, the eyes the Yellow River, the mouth the Huai, the nose the Ji. The texts want the rivers deep, wide, clear flowing and well banked.

Lớp 4: ngũ quan, năm vị quanLayer 4: the five features

The five features are the five sense organs, each given an official title. They overlap with the four rivers, but this layer adds the brows and reads each organ by its office rather than its flow.

Lớp 5: mười hai cung trên mặtLayer 5: the twelve palaces

The twelve palaces divide the face by the affairs of life: self, money, siblings, home, children, helpers, marriage, health, travel, career, blessings, parents. The names echo the twelve palaces of a Zi Wei chart, but here each palace is a real area of the face.

The Complete Book of Spirit Physiognomy lists the twelfth palace as Appearance, read from the face as a whole. The map on the main page and the table above place the Parents palace at the sun and moon corners of the forehead. With any book, it helps to know which version it follows.

Lớp 6: khí sắc, phần đổi nhanh nhấtLayer 6: complexion, the fastest changing layer

The five layers above are bone and form, which change very slowly. Complexion is the colour and brightness of the skin at each point, and it shifts from phase to phase. The scholar Livia Kohn notes that the tradition of the Complete Book of Spirit Physiognomy analyses complexion by five phase theory, and the book gives complexion its own part.

Figure 8. Three tiers of the face, from lasting to fast changing.

Because it changes fast, complexion is also the easiest layer to misread from a photo. Todorov and Porter (2014) showed that different photos of the same person produce different impressions, with the variation between photos of one person sometimes equal to or greater than the variation between different people. Warm light, skin smoothing filters or one sleepless night all change the complexion in a photo.

Lớp 7: bách tuế lưu niên, tuổi trên mặtLayer 7: the hundred year chart

The hundred year chart spreads a lifetime over the face. Each year of life passes through one point. Ages are counted the traditional way, one at birth. On the main page chart, ages 1 to 14 sit on the ears, 15 on the middle of the hairline, then the path moves down: 28 at the Seal Hall, 41 at the nose root, 48 at the nose tip, 51 at the philtrum, 60 at the mouth, 71 at the chin. From 76 on it circles the face through the twelve earthly branches.

This is only an introduction. The article The hundred year chart covers all seventy five points and the twelve branches, with a box for your birth year to see where this year sits on your face.

Tướng mặt ngũ hành: nhìn cả khuônFive element faces: the whole shape

Besides the seven layers, the tradition assigns the whole face and body to one of the five elements. The five shapes section of the Complete Book of Spirit Physiognomy describes: the Metal form square and upright, pale, neither fleshy nor thin boned. The Wood form lean and straight, hard jointed, faintly green. The Water form round, thick and heavy, dark. The Fire form pointed, red. The Earth form solid and generous, bright yellow.

The face shape is the paper and the zones are the writing on it, just like the five element hand shapes in palm reading. The same nose on a Wood face and on an Earth face is read differently.

Nam và nữ khác nhau thế nàoHow men and women differ

The zones are the same on male and female faces: the three zones, five mountains and twelve palaces sit in the same places. The clearest difference is the direction of the yearly chart. The classical Verse of Yearly Fortune Points opens by saying men start on the left, women on the right. So a man's childhood years sit on his left ear, a woman's on her right ear, and every paired yearly point on a woman's face is mirrored.

Livia Kohn notes that the Complete Book of Spirit Physiognomy has a volume devoted to women. Old physiognomy, East and West, carries the prejudices of its time. The 2017 essay by Agüera y Arcas, Mitchell and Todorov recalls that Victorian physiognomy was used to claim women were incapable of abstract mathematical thought. Master Ung Khiem reads a woman's face by the same points and with the same respect as a man's, and never uses old verdicts on virtue.

Khoa học nói gì về đoán tính cách qua khuôn mặtWhat science says about reading character from faces

Psychology has studied impressions from faces seriously. The results fall into two clear halves: people judge very fast and with great confidence, but not very accurately.

Ấn tượng thành hình trong một phần mười giâyImpressions form in a tenth of a second

Willis and Todorov (2006) showed unfamiliar faces for different lengths of time and asked for five judgments: attractiveness, likeability, trustworthiness, competence and aggressiveness. Ratings after 100 milliseconds already correlated highly with ratings made without a time limit. Longer exposure changed the judgments little and mainly boosted confidence.

Todorov and colleagues (2005) showed pairs of unfamiliar US congressional candidates and asked which looked more competent. The candidate rated more competent won 68.8% of the 2004 Senate races, and 71.6% across all years. With only one second of viewing, the figure was still 67.6%.

This shows that faces sway votes, not that competent looking people are competent. Olivola and Todorov (2010) tested exactly that question on over a million judgments: people inferring others' traits from photos were less accurate than if they had ignored the face and used only population base rates.

Cẩn trọng với ứng dụng "AI xem tướng"Be wary of "AI face reading" apps

In 2016 a paper by Wu and Zhang posted on arXiv claimed machine learning could spot convicted criminals from portrait photos with nearly 90% accuracy. Agüera y Arcas, Mitchell and Todorov (2017) showed the model only relearned what people already see in a photo, such as frowning or smiling, clothing, the setting, and the bias built into the conviction data itself. They called it physiognomy in new clothes.

Since 2 February 2025, the European Union AI Act bans biometric categorisation systems that infer a person's race, political opinions, religion or sexual orientation, and bans predicting criminal risk solely from profiling or personality traits. An app that promises to read your intelligence, trustworthiness or character from a selfie deserves your doubt.

As early as the third century BC, Xunzi wrote in "Against Physiognomy" that examining the form is not as good as examining the mind, and examining the mind not as good as choosing the right method. Two thousand years later, psychology laboratories reached a conclusion not far from his.

Chụp khuôn mặt thế nào để đọc đượcHow to photograph a face for reading

Since different photos give different impressions, a photo for face reading should follow a fixed, neutral setup. The Three Readings page asks for two photos: one frontal and one in profile at 90 degrees.

  4. Tắt mọi bộ lọc làm đẹp, chế độ làm mịn da và chế độ chân dung xóa phông.
  5. Ảnh nghiêng quay hẳn 90 độ, thấy rõ trán, sống mũi, cằm và vành tai.
  1. Camera at eye level, about an arm's length away, face relaxed, not smiling.
  2. Even natural light on both sides of the face, no flash, not against the light.
  3. Pull the hair back to show the forehead and both ears, glasses off, no heavy make up.
  4. Turn off beauty filters, skin smoothing and portrait blur.
  5. For the profile, turn a full 90 degrees so the forehead, nose, chin and ear show clearly.

Thầy Ưng Khiêm đọc tướng mặt thế nàoHow Master Ung Khiem reads a face

Tách phần đo, phần luận, rồi đặt cạnh hai phép kiaMeasure apart from interpretation, then set beside the other two arts

In the Three Readings book, the measurements from the photo are written apart: the zone proportions, the balance of the two sides, the face shape, the position and size of the features. The traditional reading is written separately, naming its source, so you always know which sentence is measured and which is interpreted.

The face is never read alone. Fingerprints are carried from the womb, palm lines change slowly over the years, and the complexion shifts from phase to phase. Only the three arts together make a portrait, and the Master stresses a point only where all three agree.

The Master never pronounces on lifespan, illness or wealth, and never infers intelligence or criminality from a face. Face reading is a mirror for understanding oneself, not a source of fear.

Hỏi đápQuestions

Nhân tướng học khuôn mặt là gì?What is face reading?

It reads a person through face shape, features, zones and complexion. It is discussed in Chinese texts since the Xunzi and systematised in the Complete Book of Spirit Physiognomy. It is cultural heritage for reflection, not a method science accepts for judging character.

Xem tướng mặt bắt đầu từ đâu?Where does face reading begin?

From the whole: the three zones, then the five mountains, four rivers, five features, twelve palaces, complexion and finally the yearly points. Interpretation comes only after every layer, never from one feature.

Bên trái khuôn mặt là bên nào?Which side is the left of the face?

The subject's own left, which is on the right when you look at their photo. The classics face the subject south, so the left cheekbone is Mount Tai in the east.

What are the three zones and which ages do they cover?

The upper zone runs from the hairline to the brows, the middle from the brows to the nose tip, the lower from the philtrum to the chin. On the yearly chart they cover roughly ages 15 to 30, 31 to 50, and 51 onward.

Does science accept reading character from faces?

No. Face impressions form within 100 milliseconds and even sway votes, but Olivola and Todorov (2010) found that judging by faces is less accurate than going by base rates.

Can AI apps read my character from a selfie?

Be sceptical. Researchers have shown such models relearn expressions, photo setup and bias in the data. Since 2 February 2025 the EU bans systems that infer race, political opinions, religion or sexual orientation from biometric data.
