Tứ độc là gìWhat the four rivers are
A du is a great river running to the sea, and the four du are four great rivers. In face reading the four rivers are the four openings of the face, each named after a river: the ears are the Yangtze channel, the eyes the Yellow River channel, the mouth the Huai channel, the nose the Ji channel. The face map on the main page puts it plainly: the ears are the Yangtze, the eyes the Yellow River, the mouth the Huai, the nose the Ji.

The four rivers are the third of the seven layers introduced in face reading for beginners, after the three zones and the five mountains. That piece only names them. This one goes into each river: where the names come from, what the old books want of them, how rivers pair with mountains, and how the four rivers differ from the five features.
Ears and eyes come in pairs, so the two ears form one river and the two eyes another. The mouth and nose sit on the centre line. In every drawing here, left and right belong to the subject, and a male face always sits beside a female face. The four rivers are in the same places on both.
Bốn con sông mà sách tướng lấy tênThe four rivers the books borrowed
The name was not coined by the physiognomists. The ancient dictionary Erya, in its section on waters, already groups the Jiang, He, Huai and Ji as the four du. Jiang is the old name of the Yangtze, He the old name of the Yellow River. In ancient times all four ran to the sea on their own. Later the Huai was taken over by the Grand Canal and the Ji by the Yellow River.

| Tế ThủyJi | mũinose | không cònno longer exists | khô cạn thời Ngụy Tấn, thế kỷ 3 tới 4went dry in the Wei and Jin period, 3rd to 4th century |
The Ji is the strangest of the four. It rose near Jiyuan in today's Henan and ran through Shandong to the Bohai Sea, parallel to the Yellow River under the Zhou, Qin and Han. The city name Jiyuan means source of the Ji. The river went dry in the Wei and Jin period. In 1852, during a great flood, the Yellow River shifted from south to north of the Shandong Peninsula.
The Huai lies about midway between the Yellow River and the Yangtze. The Qinling and Huai line, formed by the river and the Qin Mountains, is sometimes regarded as the geographical divide between north and south China. From 1194 the Yellow River repeatedly shifted south to run into the Huai.
The books borrowed the names of the four greatest rivers the ancients knew for the four openings of the face, just as they borrowed the five sacred peaks for the five high points. The face is thus read as a miniature map of the land.
Sông phải sâu, rộng, thông, có bờRivers should be deep, wide, flowing and banked
The face map on the main page sums up the books' view of the four rivers in one line: rivers should be deep, wide, clear flowing and well banked. Those four ideas come from two places in the Complete Book of Spirit Physiognomy.
- Sâu. Quyển trung dẫn sách Hỗn Nghi Kinh: bốn dòng nước chớ để cạn. Quyển hạ viết tứ độc cần sâu xa.
- Rộng. Quyển hạ muốn miệng vuông và rộng.
- Thông. Quyển trung chép một câu bí quyết: năm núi chầu về, bốn sông lưu thông.
- Có bờ. Quyển hạ viết tứ độc cần trọn vẹn, bờ bãi không xô lệch.
- Deep. The middle volume quotes the Hun Yi Jing: never let the four waters be shallow. The last volume says the rivers should be deep and far reaching.
- Wide. The last volume wants the mouth square and wide.
- Flowing. The middle volume records a saying: five mountains attending, four rivers flowing through.
- Banked. The last volume says the rivers should be complete, their banks not shifting.
The description of each river below paraphrases the Four Rivers passage in the last volume of the Complete Book of Spirit Physiognomy. The wording is softened, and every clause linking shape to wealth, lifespan, intelligence or household is left out. This is tradition for reference.
Tai, Giang độcEars, the Yangtze
The book says the ear opening should be deep, with the rims around it like a double city wall. In practice one looks at whether the inner and outer rims are clear and whether both ears sit at the same height. A 90 degree profile shows the ear best.
Mắt, Hà độcEyes, the Yellow River
The book wants the eyes deep, long and fine, bright, neither too large nor too small. Of the four rivers the eyes change most in a photo: light, glasses, make up and one short night all alter them, so a reading photo needs even light.
Miệng, Hoài độcMouth, the Huai
The book wants the mouth square and wide, the upper and lower lips covering and holding each other, the upper covering, the lower holding. In practice one looks at mouth width against the nose, the fullness of both lips, and whether the lips close when the face is relaxed.
Mũi, Tế độcNose, the Ji
The book wants the nose full, high, bright, round, unbroken and not exposed. The nose is also the central Mount Song, the master peak of the five mountains, so it is the only place on the face that is both mountain and river. In practice one looks at nose length against the middle zone and the width of the wings.
The last volume's Four Rivers passage pins a verdict on each river: deep rivers bring stored wealth, deep eyes a long life, thin lips a short one, a full nose a rich house. The Hun Yi Jing quotation in the middle volume also carries a clause of ill omen. By the rules of this site, those clauses are omitted and no new verdicts are written in their place.
Núi và sông: ngũ nhạc cùng tứ độcMountains and rivers: the five peaks with the four rivers
The books never read rivers apart from mountains. In the middle volume of the Complete Book of Spirit Physiognomy, the passage on subtle distinctions opens this topic with: the five mountains and four rivers fix height and depth. Mountains show what is high, rivers what is deep. The book then lists the five peaks, then the four rivers, and records the saying: five mountains attending, four rivers flowing through.
Ngay sau câu năm núi chầu về, bốn sông lưu thông, sách viết thêm: đức hạnh phải trọn, phúc tự đến. Câu ấy nói điều Thầy Ưng Khiêm vẫn nhắc khi luận tướng: hình dáng là để hiểu mình, còn cách sống mới là điều mình làm chủ.
Right after the saying about mountains and rivers, the book adds: let virtue be complete, and blessing comes of itself. It says what Master Ung Khiem repeats in every reading: the shape of a face is for understanding oneself, while how one lives is what one controls.
Beginners look at each peak or river alone. The books read them as a set: do the mountains attend each other, do the rivers suit the mountains. A wide mouth under a small nose, or large eyes under a narrow forehead, is what a reader notices, rather than grading each river alone. The article on the five mountains goes into the peaks in depth.
One textual variant is worth knowing: in the digitised middle volume cited here, the line listing the rivers gives the nose as the Han River. The last volume and the Erya list both have the Ji. The main page and this article follow the last volume.
Tứ độc và ngũ quan: cùng bộ phận, khác cách đọcFour rivers and five features: same parts, different readings
Ears, eyes, nose and mouth belong to both the four rivers and the five features. The difference is how they are read. The five features give each part an office and read it by its work: the ears are the Official of Hearing, the eyes of Inspection, the nose of Judgement, the mouth of Intake. The four rivers read the same parts as waterways: are they deep, wide, flowing and banked.
Setting the three layers side by side shows a few things. The brows are among the five features but are neither river nor mountain. The forehead, chin and cheekbones are mountains but neither features nor rivers. Only the nose appears in all three: Official of Judgement, Mount Song and the Ji River. That is why seasoned readers look at the nose closely, yet always in relation to the whole face.
Bài ngũ quan đi qua năm vị quan, cách nhìn từng quan và cách đo tương xứng giữa mắt, mũi, miệng.
The article on the five features covers the five officials, what to look at in each, and how to measure the proportions of eyes, nose and mouth.
Bốn lỗ mở của đầu mặt: điều giải phẫu học nóiThe openings of the head: what anatomy says
First, to be clear: modern science classes physiognomy as a pseudoscience because its claims are unsupported. The shape of ears, eyes, nose and mouth does not reveal character or fate. But the books did notice something real: the four rivers are exactly where the head opens to the outside world.
Anatomy describes the head as housing the sense organs: two eyes, two ears, a nose, and the tongue inside the mouth. The ear enables hearing and, in mammals, body balance. The nose is the first organ of the respiratory system and the principal organ of smell, and its lining warms and moistens the air breathed in. The mouth and jaw handle chewing, speech and the first stage of digestion.
The ancients also saw these openings as what makes a person. The story of Hundun in the Zhuangzi says all men have seven openings to see, hear, eat and breathe. Hundun had none, so two emperors bored him one hole a day, and on the seventh day Hundun died. The four rivers of physiognomy are exactly those openings: ears, eyes, nose and mouth.
The books' word for flowing through has an interesting echo in anatomy. The tear duct carries tears from the lacrimal sac into the nasal cavity, which is why the nose runs when a person cries or has watery eyes from an allergy. The pharynx sits behind the nasal cavity and mouth, sending food to the oesophagus and air to the larynx. The Eustachian tube links the middle ear to the part of the throat behind the nose, about 35 mm long in adults, and opens when swallowing so the middle ear pressure matches the air outside.
To be precise: the ear is not open straight through like the other three. The eardrum is a thin cone shaped membrane separating the outer ear from the middle ear, taking sound vibrations from the air and passing them inward. The part joined to the throat is the middle ear, behind the eardrum.
This is set side by side by the Master for reference. The old books say nothing about tear ducts or Eustachian tubes, and the fact that the openings connect inside proves nothing about physiognomy. It only suggests why the ancients could picture the four openings as rivers of one water system.
Thầy Ưng Khiêm đọc tứ độc thế nàoHow Master Ung Khiem reads the four rivers
In the Three Readings book, the measurements of the four rivers are written apart: ear height against the brows, eye length and the gap between the eyes, nose length and width, mouth width and lip fullness, and left right balance. The traditional reading is written separately, naming its source.
The four rivers are read with the five mountains, five features and three zones, then set beside fingerprints and palm lines. The Master stresses a point only where all three arts agree.
The Master never pronounces on wealth, lifespan or illness from the four rivers. The rivers of the face are a mirror for understanding oneself, not a source of fear.

Hỏi đápQuestions
Tứ độc là gì?What are the four rivers?
They are four waterways on the face in Chinese physiognomy: the ears are the Yangtze, the eyes the Yellow River, the mouth the Huai, the nose the Ji. Each is named after a great Chinese river. It is a tradition for reference.
Bốn con sông ấy là sông nào?Which four rivers are they?
The Yangtze, the Yellow River, the Huai and the Ji, which the ancient dictionary Erya groups as the four du. All four once ran to the sea on their own. Today most of the Huai flows into the Yangtze, and the Ji went dry in the Wei and Jin period.
Sông trên mặt "sâu, rộng, thông" nghĩa là gì?What does "deep, wide, flowing" mean for the face?
It is the ideal the books set for the rivers: never shallow, a wide mouth, flowing through, firm banks. In the Complete Book of Spirit Physiognomy, the ear wants a deep opening and clear rims, the eyes depth, length and brightness, the mouth squareness and width, the nose fullness. Clauses on wealth and lifespan are left out.
Tứ độc khác ngũ quan thế nào?How do the four rivers differ from the five features?
Both cover the ears, eyes, nose and mouth, but the five features read each part by its office and add the brows, while the four rivers read them as waterways: deep, wide, flowing, banked. The nose is the only part in the four rivers, five features and five mountains alike.
Tứ độc liên quan gì tới ngũ nhạc?How are the four rivers linked to the five mountains?
The books read mountains and rivers together. The Complete Book of Spirit Physiognomy says the five mountains and four rivers fix height and depth, and records the saying: five mountains attending, four rivers flowing through. Readers ask whether the rivers suit the mountains, not how each river scores alone.
Can the four rivers reveal wealth or health?
No. Science classes physiognomy as a pseudoscience. Anatomy only tells us the ears, eyes, nose and mouth are openings tied to the senses and linked inside. Health needs a doctor. The Master uses the four rivers for reference and self understanding.
