Tướng mắt: đọc đôi mắt trong nhân tướng họcEye reading: the eyes in Chinese physiognomy

Bài này đi sâu từng lớp của đôi mắt trên một mặt nam và một mặt nữ: dáng mắt, thần mắt, lòng trắng, mí, đuôi mắt, khoảng cách hai mắt, hai bên khác nhau, ba cung quanh mắt, sáu tuổi lưu niên, rồi đặt cạnh điều khoa học đã đo.The classics call the eyes the Official of Inspection and give them more pages than any other feature. This piece goes layer by layer through the eyes on a male and a female face: type, spirit, whites, lids, outer corners, spacing, differences between the two sides, the three palaces around them and their six yearly ages, then sets all of it beside what science has measured.

Eye reading is the part of Chinese physiognomy that reads the eyes: their type, spirit, iris and white, lids, outer corners, spacing and balance, the three palaces around them and the six yearly ages from 35 to 40. The classics call the eyes the Official of Inspection and describe more than thirty eye types, many named after animals, such as the phoenix and dragon eye. It is a tradition for reference, not a method science accepts for judging character or health.

Tướng mắt là gìWhat eye reading is

Among the five features, the eyes are the Official of Inspection, which the face map on the main page glosses as the official who observes. Among the four rivers, the eyes are the Yellow River. Eye reading is the part of physiognomy devoted to the eyes alone: their type, spirit, iris and white, lids, outer corners, spacing, and the palaces and years of life that sit around them.

Old Chinese texts repeatedly tie the eyes to the heart. Mencius, in the first part of the Li Lou chapter, says that of all that is in a person nothing is better than the pupils, which cannot hide what is bad: when the heart is upright the pupils are bright, when it is not they are dim, so listen to the words, watch the pupils, and how can anyone hide. The last volume of the Complete Book of Spirit Physiognomy echoes this and puts it briefly: the eyes are the outer door of the heart.

The scholar Livia Kohn notes that the Yuebodong zhongji, one source of the Complete Book, ties the eyes to Wood and the heart to Fire: Wood produces Fire, so the eyes reveal the heart. The five features covered all five briefly. This article is about the eyes alone, and goes much deeper.

To be clear from the start: modern science classes physiognomy as a pseudoscience. The tradition here is cultural heritage, cited for reference and self understanding. The old books' harsh verdicts on character, fate or illness are softened or left out, and the article says where.

Vì sao ai cũng nhìn vào mắt trướcWhy everyone looks at the eyes first

Before the classics, consider what science says about the eyes themselves. Kobayashi and Kohshima (1997) compared eye shape in nearly half of all primate species and reported in Nature that a widely exposed white around the iris is uniquely human. Humans have the largest ratio of exposed white in the eye outline, and the outline itself is stretched horizontally. This makes it easy for others to see where we are looking.

Figure 2. The same three gaze directions: with a wide white, the direction is plain. With a dark sclera, as in most other primates, it is harder to read. An illustration, not any particular species.

The cooperative eye hypothesis holds that this trait evolved so humans could follow each other's gaze while working together. A 2007 experiment by Tomasello's group found that great apes mostly followed an experimenter's head turns, while infants followed more when only the eyes moved. The hypothesis is still debated.

When recognising a face, people also look to the eye region. Peterson and Eckstein (2012) showed that where people fixate to judge identity, gender or emotion is where those tasks are done best, and their title places that point just below the eyes. Sadr, Jarudi and Sinha (2003) even found that removing the eyebrows hurt recognition of famous faces more than removing the eyes, so the eye region is best understood as eyes and brows together. Brow reading covers the brows.

These results explain why the eyes draw attention, and why the classics devote so many pages to them. They do not show that reading the eyes reveals character or fate.

Các dáng mắt trong sách tướngEye types in the classics

According to Livia Kohn, from its third volume the Complete Book of Spirit Physiognomy analyses each feature: thirty kinds of eyebrows, twenty four noses, fourteen ears, and more than thirty kinds of eyes. It also contains a text attributed to Bodhidharma on seven ways to analyse the eyes, though Kohn notes such attributions cannot be verified.

Many eye types are named after animals. The five features section of the last volume already praises eyes long like a phoenix's, with a clear, bright and refined spirit. Editions of the Hemp Robed Divine Physiognomy in circulation today list thirty nine eye types. The drawing below simplifies eight of them, following the shape descriptions only.

The phoenix eye is familiar from literature. The first chapter of Romance of the Three Kingdoms gives Guan Yu red phoenix eyes and silkworm brows. As commonly understood, the red phoenix eye is long and narrow, with the outer corners lifting and the upper lid usually covering the lower.

The books also list types they disfavour: large bulging round eyes, triangular eyes, sidelong wolf eyes, eyes likened to those of a chicken, snake or rat. These come with very harsh verdicts on character. The article names the types only and leaves every verdict out. An eye type in a photo also depends on the angle, the light and the expression of the moment, so no one should assign themselves a type and worry.

Thần mắt: phần sách coi trọng nhấtSpirit in the eyes: what the books value most

The classics do not stop at shape. The section on spirit and energy in the middle volume of the Complete Book wants the gaze clear and bright, looking round without slant. The list of noble types in the last volume praises steady pupils, black as dots of lacquer. Spirit here means the brightness and steadiness of the gaze, not whether the eye is large or small.

The same section also notes ways of looking: often looking up, stealing glances, looking askance. These are living habits, not the shape of the eye. The verdicts attached to them are harsh and are left out here.

Spirit is the hardest thing to read from a photo. Todorov and Porter (2014) showed that different photos of the same person leave different impressions, sometimes differing as much as or more than different people do. A short night, warm light or an underexposed shot all make eyes look duller.

Lòng đen, lòng trắng, tam bạch và tứ bạchIris and white, three whites and four whites

The Complete Book calls the two eyes the Great Yang and Great Yin, the sun and moon of the face, and wants the black and white clearly divided, the eyes long and fine, parting towards the temples. It praises eyes with more black than white, and a bright light.

Ngược lại, lòng trắng lộ ra ở ba phía quanh tròng gọi là tam bạch, lộ cả bốn phía gọi là tứ bạch. Chữ tam bạch, tiếng Nhật đọc là sanpaku, được George Ohsawa đưa tới người đọc tiếng Anh qua cuốn You Are All Sanpaku năm 1965.

Conversely, white showing on three sides of the iris is called three whites, and on all four sides four whites. The term three whites, sanpaku in Japanese, reached English readers through George Ohsawa's 1965 book You Are All Sanpaku. Like the rest of physiognomy, the idea that the amount of white says something about a person has no scientific basis.

Top: how much white shows around the iris, as the books name it. Bottom: the same eye, where a change of posture alone makes white appear below.

Vì vậy phần đo chỉ xét lòng trắng trên ảnh chụp thẳng, máy ngang tầm mắt, mắt nhìn thẳng vào máy. Cúi cằm rồi ngước mắt, hay ngửa đầu nhìn xuống, đều làm lòng trắng lộ khác đi mà mắt không hề đổi.

So the measurements consider the white only in a straight photo, camera at eye level, eyes looking into the lens. Chin down with eyes raised, or head back with eyes lowered, changes how much white shows while the eye itself has not changed.

Mí mắt: một mí, hai míEyelids: single and double

The classics describe lids through eye types, such as the elephant eye folded above and below, or the deer eye with long lids. Here science has much to say. A double eyelid has a fold on the upper lid, formed where the levator aponeurosis inserts into the underside of the lid skin. A single eyelid lacks that fold.

Top: single and double eyelids, simplified. Bottom: the share with double eyelids on both eyes among 103 Malays and 97 Chinese in Malaysia, from Lu and colleagues (2017).

Lu and colleagues (2017) took 3D photographs of 103 Malays and 97 Chinese living in Malaysia. Every Malay in the sample and 70.1% of the Chinese had double eyelids on both eyes, among the Chinese 81.3% of women and 59.2% of men. In this sample, eyelids differ clearly between the two ethnic groups, and between men and women within one group.

Eyelids are also partly inherited. Wang and colleagues (2021) studied 697 Han Chinese and found two genetic variants linked to the lid fold. One variant together with sex and age explained 10% of the variation in the fold, leaving the rest unexplained by those factors. Classical genetics once treated the single eyelid as a simple recessive trait, but it is now seen as a trait shaped by many genes, which is why two single lidded parents can have a double lidded child.

For face reading this has two consequences. First, single or double lids are above all an inherited and ethnic trait, not something to pass verdicts on. Second, the lids are the easiest part to alter in a photo, with lid tape, make up or surgery, so the measurements always note whether the lids are natural.

Đuôi mắt và cung Thê ThiếpThe outer corners and the Spouse palace

The five features drew three outer corner shapes: tilting up, level, tilting down. Here is how to measure. On a frontal photo, draw a line from the inner corner to the outer corner, then a horizontal line through the inner corner. The angle between them shows how far the outer corner sits above or below the inner. Measure each eye separately, since the two sides rarely match.

Measuring the tilt of the outer corner on the subject's right eye, male and female faces, with the Spouse palace at the outer corner. The flick at the corner of the female eye is make up and is ignored when measuring.

The Complete Book wants the eyes long and fine, parting towards the temples. On the face map of the main page, the outer corner is the fish tail area, home of the Spouse palace, the palace of marriage. This is tradition for reference. Lines at the outer corner come with age and with smiling, and are nothing to worry about.

Khoảng cách hai mắt: đo thế nàoSpacing of the eyes: how to measure

The three distances easiest to take on a frontal photo are the length of one eye, the gap between the inner corners, and the distance between the pupils. The gap between the inner corners is the nose root, where the yearly path passes from the eyes to the nose at 41. The five features showed that "ideal" canons such as a gap equal to one eye hardly fit real faces.

Three measurements on a male and a female face. Below: the distance between pupils in adults from the 2012 US Army anthropometric survey, the dot is the mean, the bar runs from minimum to maximum.

The distance between pupils is the familiar measurement for glasses. In the 2012 US Army anthropometric survey, the mean was 61.7 mm for women, ranging from 51 to 74.5 mm, and 64 mm for men, from 53 to 77 mm. It varies with age, sex and ancestry. Very different spacings are all normal human eyes.

Trên ảnh không có thước, nên phần đo không tính ra milimét mà so các khoảng với nhau: khoảng giữa hai khóe trong so với chiều dài một mắt, rồi so hai mắt với nhau.

A photo has no ruler, so the measurements do not convert to millimetres but compare distances with each other: the gap between the inner corners against the length of one eye, then one eye against the other.

Hai mắt khác nhauWhen the two eyes differ

The compilation of the thirty nine eye types after the Hemp Robe calls two eyes that differ in shape or size yin yang eyes. Human faces are not perfectly symmetric. Morphology research finds that in most people the eyes, nose and mouth sit slightly to the same side of the axis through the ears, with the offset on average slightly larger for the eyes than for the nose. So the two eyes can differ a little: one a little smaller, a little higher, or one single lidded and the other double.

To compare, first draw a line through both irises and check it is level. A slight head tilt already skews it and makes one eye and brow look higher. A slightly turned face makes the far eye look narrower. So the Master compares the eyes only on a straight photo and records each side separately.

Eyes of different colours, or one eye changing colour, are a matter for an eye doctor, not for physiognomy.

The middle volume of the Complete Book wants the under eye ridge evenly raised. Its verdict on descendants, and the last volume's verdicts on moles or scars below the eyes, are harsh and left out. The area below the eyes changes with sleep, age and make up, so the measurements record it without verdicts. The meaning of all twelve palaces is in the twelve palaces of the face.

Tuổi 35 tới 40: sáu năm ở đôi mắtAges 35 to 40: six years in the eyes

The Complete Book says the two eyes hold six years. On the hundred year chart of the main page these are ages 35 to 40, counted the traditional way. The six points form three yin yang pairs: Great Yang, Great Yin, Middle Yang, Middle Yin, Lesser Yang, Lesser Yin. On a man's face Yang sits on the left eye and Yin on the right, moving from the inner corner to the outer. A woman's face has the same names on swapped sides, like every paired yearly point.

The hundred year chart has a box for your birth year to see where this year sits on your face. An age that falls on the eyes does not make the year good or bad. In the Master's readings it is simply a place to look more closely, then set beside the fingerprints and palms.

Mắt đổi theo tuổi, và khi nào cần đi khámHow eyes change with age, and when to see a doctor

The eyes do not stay the same for life. According to the MSD Manual, the muscles that close the lids weaken with age, the upper lid can droop, the fat around the eye socket can shrink so the eye sinks back or bulge forward so the lids look puffy, the pupils become smaller and slower to react to light, and the white may take on a bluish hue as it becomes more transparent. These are common changes of ageing.

So when comparing old and new photos, changed eyes are natural. The measurements always note the age at the time of the photo, and never treat drooping lids or bags of age as a bad sign.

Màu mắt là việc của bác sĩEye colour is a matter for a doctor

The old books have lines reading the colour of the eyes and their whites. This article does not cite them and the Master does not use them. Red eyes lasting more than a few days or with pain, sudden blurred sight, whites turning yellow, or an eye changing colour call for a doctor soon. According to the Mayo Clinic, red eyes with pain, a bad headache or a sudden change in sight need immediate care. According to Australia's healthdirect, skin and whites of the eyes turning yellow call for a doctor as soon as possible.

Thầy Ưng Khiêm đọc tướng mắt thế nàoHow Master Ung Khiem reads the eyes

Đo trước, luận sau, không phán từ một đôi mắtMeasure first, interpret after, no verdicts from a pair of eyes

In the Three Readings book, the measurements of the eyes are written apart: length and height of each eye, the inner corner gap against one eye, the tilt of the outer corners, single or double lids, the two eyes compared, with notes on make up, lid tape or coloured contact lenses. The traditional reading is written separately, naming its source.

The Master records the spirit of the eyes as a cautious remark, since a photo holds only one moment. Eye type, the three palaces and ages 35 to 40 are read with the three zones and the whole face, then set beside fingerprints and palms. The Master stresses a point only where all three arts agree.

The Master never pronounces on character, lifespan, illness or wealth from the eyes, and never reads illness from eye colour. Eye reading is a mirror for understanding oneself, not a source of fear.

Hỏi đápQuestions

Tướng mắt là gì?What is eye reading?

It is the part of Chinese physiognomy that reads the eyes: type, spirit, iris and white, lids, outer corners, spacing, the three palaces around them and the yearly ages 35 to 40. The classics call the eyes the Official of Inspection. It is a tradition for reference, not science.

Mắt phượng là mắt thế nào?What is a phoenix eye?

In the classics the phoenix eye is long and refined. The red phoenix eye, as commonly understood, is long and narrow with the outer corners lifting. Romance of the Three Kingdoms gives Guan Yu red phoenix eyes and silkworm brows.

What are three white eyes, and should I worry?

Three whites means white showing on three sides of the iris, above or below as well as both sides. Like the rest of physiognomy it has no scientific basis, and simply lowering the chin and raising the eyes in a photo makes the white below appear.

Mắt một mí hay hai mí do đâu?What makes a single or double eyelid?

A double eyelid has a fold where the lifting muscle's tendon attaches to the lid skin. The fold is partly inherited through many genes, and differs between ethnic groups and between men and women. A study in Malaysia found every Malay in its sample and 70.1% of the Chinese had double lids on both eyes.

Which yearly ages fall on the eyes?

Theo bảng bách tuế lưu niên của trang tổng, hai mắt giữ sáu tuổi từ 35 tới 40: Thái Dương, Thái Âm, Trung Dương, Trung Âm, Thiếu Dương, Thiếu Âm. Mặt nam Dương ở mắt trái, mặt nữ đổi bên. Tuổi 41 sang sơn căn giữa hai mắt.

On the main page's hundred year chart, the eyes hold six ages from 35 to 40: Great Yang, Great Yin, Middle Yang, Middle Yin, Lesser Yang, Lesser Yin. On a man Yang is on the left eye, on a woman the sides swap. At 41 the path moves to the nose root between the eyes.

Are red eyes or yellow whites a bad sign?

Đó không phải chuyện tướng pháp. Mắt đỏ kéo dài hay kèm đau, lòng trắng ngả vàng, nhìn mờ đột ngột, mắt tự đổi màu thì quý vị hãy đi khám sớm. Thầy không đọc bệnh qua màu mắt.

That is not a matter for physiognomy. Red eyes that last or hurt, whites turning yellow, sudden blurred sight or an eye changing colour call for a doctor soon. The Master does not read illness from eye colour.
