Tướng mặt nam và nữ khác nhau ở đâuHow male and female faces differ in face reading

On the face map, male and female faces carry the same points. The real difference in the tradition is the direction of the yearly chart, while the sayings reserved for women in the old books reflect the society of their time. This piece separates the three, then sets them beside what science measures in the facial bones of both sexes.

Male and female faces share one map in face reading: the three zones, five mountains and twelve palaces sit in the same places. The traditional difference is the yearly chart, which runs men left, women right, so a woman's face is mirrored. The old books also hold sayings reserved for women, such as high cheekbones harming a husband, which reflect the society of their time and which the Master does not use. Science finds average differences in the brow ridge, jaw, chin and nose, with large overlap between the sexes.

Tướng mặt nam nữ: giống ở đâu, khác ở đâuWhere male and female faces are alike and where they differ

The question of how male and female faces differ in face reading has three layers of answer, and they are best kept apart. The first is the map of points: on the face map of the main page, male and female faces share the same three zones, five mountains and twelve palaces, in exactly the same places. The second is the men left, women right rule of the hundred year chart: a woman's face runs the other way. The third is the sayings reserved for women in the old books, which carry the stamp of the society that produced them.

Beside those three layers sits a quite different question: how the bones and features of the two sexes really differ. That belongs to anthropometry and anatomy, with measurements, and has its own section later. The drawing below previews the average differences the studies report, on the page's male and female portraits.

Read this drawing with the word "average" in mind. Each mark is where the two groups differ when many people are averaged, not something true of everyone. The science section below shows how widely the sexes overlap.

Cùng một bản đồ bộ vịOne map of points for both

In the data behind the face map of the Three Readings page, each point has one set of coordinates, used for both faces. The Seal Hall is the Life palace, the nose tip the Wealth palace, the left cheekbone the Eastern Mount Tai, the right cheekbone the Western Mount Hua, the outer eye corners the Spouse palace. No point exists only on a male face or only on a female face.

The three zones (dashed frames), five mountains (rings in element colours) and twelve palaces (dark dots) on the male and female faces. The lines joining the zone boundaries of both faces show that every point sits in the same place.

The meanings on the main page are shared as well. The Spouse palace reads "Fish tail at the outer eye corners. Marriage.", with no split into husband or wife. The three zones follow three stages of life, the upper zone "Early life, roughly ages 15 to 30 on the age chart: origins, parents, schooling", applied the same way to everyone.

Nam tả nữ hữu trên khuôn mặtMen left, women right on the face

The one real difference between male and female faces in the tradition lies in the hundred year chart. The Complete Book of Spirit Physiognomy, middle volume, records the Verse of Yearly Fortune Points, which opens: Duc thuc luu nien van khi hanh, nam ta nu huu cac phan hinh. To know where each year's fortune travels, men count on the left, women on the right, each with its own form. The next line puts ages one and two at the Heavenly Wheel, the upper rim of the ear.

Left and right here are the subject's own. The main page builds the female chart by mirroring every point that is off the midline, for ages under 76. Midline points such as the Seal Hall, Mountain Root, Nose Tip and Philtrum do not move. The twelve branch ring for ages 76 to 99 also stays the same for both sexes.

Age 46 is on the man's left cheekbone and the woman's right. Age 28, the Seal Hall, and 48, the Nose Tip, sit on the midline and do not move.

Counting on the main page chart: of 99 years, 60 fall on paired points and swap sides for women, 15 sit on the midline and 24 belong to the twelve branch ring, which stays put. So for more than half of the years on the chart, a woman's face is read on the opposite side from a man's.

Ages 1 to 99 on the main page chart. Red: 60 years that swap sides for women. Bronze: 15 years on the midline. Grey: 24 years on the twelve branch ring.

Not every book follows this rule. An article on the yearly points on Vocus (2021) notes that some schools in the books do not split by sex and start everyone at the left ear. The main page and the book follow the verse: the female face is mirrored. The article The hundred year chart has a full lookup for every age on both faces. The men left, women right rule also appears in palm reading, discussed in Which hand to read.

Beyond the direction of the yearly chart, the old books also read women's faces in a way of their own. Below are only the points for which an open source was found. Heavy verdicts in these sayings have been softened, and marked as softened, and anything touching wealth or health has been left out.

Mặt nữ được đọc qua người chồngA woman's face read through her husband

The Spouse palace passage in the middle volume of the Complete Book of Spirit Physiognomy shows that way of reading clearly. It is the same point at the outer eye corner, the fish tail and the side gate, yet for a woman the book reads straight through to her husband: bright and moist means a good husband, hollow was called bad for the husband. The original wording is harsher, and has been softened here. The main page records the same palace as "Fish tail at the outer eye corners. Marriage.", shared by both people in a marriage.

The scholar Livia Kohn (1986) notes that the Complete Book of Spirit Physiognomy has a chapter on women, children and body types in general, and among the physiognomy headings she lists are Nine Good Points in Women and Nine Bad Points in Women.

Gò má cao và giọng nói toHigh cheekbones and a loud voice

The best known saying is that a woman with high cheekbones harms her husband. A 2019 article on Sina explains that it grew out of inspecting faces when choosing a bride: people linked high cheekbones to a firm, controlling nature, and feared it would sap a husband's drive. The same article concludes that the saying had its reasons in the farming society of the past, but that women now work and share the household load, so it no longer holds.

On the voice, the On the Five Tones passage in the final volume of the Complete Book faults a man with a woman's voice and a woman with a man's. The verdict attached touches on wealth and is left out here. A 2018 ELLE Hong Kong article discusses the idea of masculine women and feminine men, and its author calls many of those sayings sexist and no longer applicable today.

Vì sao sách cũ nói như vậyWhy the old books spoke this way

The books were written in a society where a woman's lot was bound to marriage, so her face was read through her husband. Kohn points to another trace of custom in the books: reading the lines on the soles of the feet slowly lost weight, which she suggests may be linked to foot binding, dated to the first half of the tenth century. Western physiognomy was no different. The article Face reading for beginners recalls that Victorian physiognomy was used to claim women could not think in abstract mathematics.

Master Ung Khiem reads a woman's face by the same points and with the same respect as a man's, and never uses old verdicts on virtue. He does not read harm to a spouse from any face, and does not rate looks.

If anyone ever told you that high cheekbones, a strong voice or firm features bode ill for a husband, please understand it as the worry of a society long gone, not something written on your face.

Khoa học: dị hình giới tính của khuôn mặtThe science: sexual dimorphism of the face

Sexual dimorphism means average physical differences between males and females. Kleisner and colleagues (2021) analysed 1,317 facial photos from eight countries: Brazil, Cameroon, Colombia, the Czech Republic, Namibia, Romania, Turkey and the United Kingdom. They describe female faces as more gracile, with a smaller nose, fuller lips, and bigger eyes with thinner brows. Male faces are generally more robust, with a larger lower face, a bigger lower jaw, smaller eyes set closer to pronounced brows, and a bigger nose with a broader root.

The size of the difference is not the same across populations. The same study found lower facial shape dimorphism in the African populations of its sample, and more variation among male faces than female ones. Skomina and colleagues (2020) compared young adults of about 23 with older adults of about 75 to 78 and found every sex related difference more pronounced in the older group.

Trên xương mặtOn the facial skeleton

Wikipedia notes that the brow ridge is typically more prominent in men, varying between populations, and that male mandibles are generally squarer, stronger and larger, with a more pronounced chin. Forensic science uses exactly these places to estimate sex from a skull. Walker (2008) scored five traits on a scale of 1 to 5: the nuchal crest, mastoid process, supraorbital margin, glabella and mental eminence. A supraorbital margin scoring 1 is as sharp as the edge of a dull knife, one scoring 5 is thick and rounded like a pencil. Low scores are more typical of women, high scores of men.

Hai giới chồng lấn nhiều hơn người ta nghĩThe sexes overlap more than people think

Taken one trait at a time, the sexes overlap a great deal. On 304 skulls of known sex, Walker (2008) found that a single trait classified about 69 to 83 percent correctly depending on the trait, and all five together 88 percent. Even for a forensic expert holding the skull, about one person in eight is still placed in the wrong sex.

The facial surface tells the same story. Tanikawa and colleagues (2016) made 3D scans of 200 Japanese adults aged 18 to 35 and took 185 measurements from each face. Only 67 of the 185 differed significantly between the groups. Combining the 11 best gave 96.5 percent correct classification. The same study found the nose more protuberant in the male group and the cheeks more protuberant in the female group.

Bottom: correct sex classification in Walker (2008) on skulls and Tanikawa and colleagues (2016) on 3D faces. A single trait does far worse than many combined.

So a woman with a square jaw and a visible brow ridge, or a man with a fine face and large eyes, is entirely ordinary. They simply fall in the overlap on one or two traits, while the face as a whole carries many others.

Nam tính, nữ tính là cảm nhận, không phải tính cáchMasculine and feminine are impressions, not character

People are very good at telling sex from a face. Bruce and colleagues (1993) write that people are remarkably accurate, approaching ceiling, at deciding whether a face is male or female, even when cues from hairstyle, make up and facial hair are minimised. The eye combines many cues at once: brows, skin, nose projection, jawline.

Yet seeing a face as "masculine" or "feminine" is an impression, and that impression does not fully match the real differences between the sexes. Mitteroecker and colleagues (2015) found that the shape features rated as masculine were wide faces with widely spaced eyes, a wide nose, thin lips and a large, massive lower face, and that these only partly resembled the average difference between male and female faces.

Nor does the impression reveal character. A measure often tied to a masculine look is the facial width to height ratio. Kosinski (2017) tested it on 137,163 people against 55 psychological scales, including the five personality domains, impulsiveness and sense of fairness, and found it was not substantially linked to any of them. A firm looking face does not make a firm person, let alone one who harms anyone.

Điều này chạm tới tướng pháp ở đâuWhere this touches the tradition

The old sayings about high cheekbones, a man's voice or masculine features in women all leap from an appearance to a temperament, then from temperament to fate. The studies above show the first step does not hold: a masculine or feminine look is the viewer's impression, and character cannot be read from it.

Thầy Ưng Khiêm đọc mặt nam, mặt nữ thế nàoHow Master Ung Khiem reads male and female faces

Tách phần đo, phần luận, và chỉ giữ chỗ khác có cơ sởMeasure apart from interpretation, keep only grounded differences

The measurements record the subject's sex, because the one place the tradition changes by sex is the direction of the yearly chart. Zone proportions, jaw width, natural or groomed brows and the brow ridge in profile are measured the same way for everyone.

The interpretation follows the tradition for reflection and names its source. Points are read the same for men and women. The Master does not use old verdicts on virtue or on harming a spouse, does not read character from how masculine or feminine a face looks, and never pronounces on lifespan, illness or wealth.

The face is never read alone. Fingerprints are carried from the womb, palm lines change slowly over the years, and complexion shifts from phase to phase. The Master stresses a point only where all three arts agree.

Hỏi đápQuestions

Tướng mặt nam nữ khác nhau ở đâu?How do male and female faces differ in face reading?

The points are the same: the three zones, five mountains and twelve palaces sit in the same places. The traditional difference is the yearly chart, men left, women right, so a woman's face is mirrored. Sayings reserved for women in the old books reflect the society of their time.

Nam tả nữ hữu trong tướng mặt là gì?What does men left, women right mean on the face?

It is the opening line of the yearly verse in the Complete Book of Spirit Physiognomy: men count on the left, women on the right. Age 1 is on a man's left ear and a woman's right, and every paired point swaps. On the main page chart, 60 of 99 years swap sides.

Do high cheekbones in a woman harm her husband?

No. It is a saying born of inspecting faces when choosing a bride in the old society. In the main page's tradition the cheekbones are the Eastern and Western Mounts, read the same for men and women. The Master does not read harm to a spouse.

Does a masculine looking woman have a strong character?

It cannot be inferred. A masculine look is the viewer's impression and only partly matches real sex differences. Kosinski (2017) found facial width to height ratio was not substantially linked to 55 psychological scales in over 137,000 people.

Khoa học nói mặt nam và mặt nữ khác nhau thế nào?What does science say about male and female faces?

On average, male faces have a more prominent brow ridge, a larger and squarer jaw, a more pronounced chin and a bigger nose. Female faces have larger eyes, fuller lips and thinner brows. The size of the difference varies by population and grows with age.

Can the facial bones tell sex for certain?

Not for certain. Walker (2008) found one skull trait classified about 69 to 83 percent correctly and five traits together 88 percent. The sexes overlap a lot on each trait, so a square jawed woman or a fine featured man is entirely ordinary.
