Câu trả lời ba tầngA three layer answer
The question "are fingerprints inherited" sounds like a yes or no. But a fingerprint has three layers, and each is inherited to a different degree. The first is the total ridge count, the number of ridges counted across ten fingers. The second is each finger's pattern type: arch, loop or whorl. The third is the fine detail: where a ridge forks, where one stops, the features police use to identify people.

Sách The Fingerprint Sourcebook của Viện Tư pháp Quốc gia Hoa Kỳ (NIJ) tóm lại gọn: gen tác động lên vân tay một cách gián tiếp, và tổng số vân di truyền rõ hơn dạng vân. Phần dưới đi qua từng tầng, bắt đầu từ lúc vân thành hình trong bụng mẹ.
The US National Institute of Justice (NIJ) Fingerprint Sourcebook puts it briefly: genetics influences fingerprints indirectly, and ridge count is more heritable than pattern type. The sections below take each layer in turn, starting from when the print forms in the womb.
Vân tay thành hình trong bụng mẹFingerprints form in the womb
To see where genes come in, one has to know how a print forms. Chapter 3 of the NIJ book, by Kasey Wertheim, gives the milestones in estimated gestational age. Around weeks 7 to 8 a volar pad begins to rise on each fingertip. Primary ridges begin to form at about 10.5 weeks. Between weeks 15 and 17 secondary ridges appear between the primary ones, and the minutiae become permanently set. By week 16 the volar pads have fully merged with the contours of the fingers.
MedlinePlus, from the US National Library of Medicine, puts it in months: ridges begin to develop in the third month of pregnancy, are fully formed by the sixth, and stay the same for life. The two accounts differ by a few weeks because one follows biological milestones and the other speaks plainly for the general reader. Both agree the print is finished long before birth.
Đệm gan tay cao hay thấpA high pad or a low one
The shape of the pad when ridges begin matters a great deal. The NIJ book says ridges forming on high, pronounced volar pads conform to the surface as high count whorls. Ridges forming on a finger with a low or absent pad create low count or arch patterns. If the pad starts to regress early, it is already well regressed when primary ridges begin, and a low count pattern or an arch is likely.
Chính ở đây gen chen vào: không phải gen vẽ sẵn dạng vân, mà gen góp phần định lúc nào đệm nhô, lúc nào đệm xẹp, lúc nào gờ vân bắt đầu.
This is where genes come in: not by drawing the pattern in advance, but by helping set when the pad rises, when it subsides, and when ridges begin.
Gen tác động gián tiếp, bụng mẹ góp phần chi tiếtGenes act indirectly, the womb shapes the detail
The NIJ book says that, like many traits, genetics influences pattern formation indirectly, by contributing to the timing of the onset of ridge skin, the timing of volar pad regression, fetal growth and other factors. It adds that the stresses across small areas of skin are not inherited. Since dermatoglyphic formation cannot be derived solely from genetic or environmental factors, it must result from an interaction of the two.
MedlinePlus says the same in other words. The basic size, shape and spacing of dermatoglyphs appear to be influenced by genetic factors. The finer details are influenced by other factors during fetal development, including substances taken during pregnancy and the environment inside the womb. Multiple genes are involved, so the inheritance pattern is not straightforward: genes that control the layers of skin, and the muscles, fat and blood vessels beneath it, may all play a role.
Cơ chế Turing: ba chỗ sóng gờ vân bắt đầuA Turing mechanism: three places ridge waves begin
In 2023 Denis Headon's group at the University of Edinburgh published in Cell (Glover et al.) an account of how ridges form. According to the paper's abstract, the spacing of the ridges is set by a Turing reaction diffusion system, based on signalling between EDAR, WNT and antagonistic BMP. Science News explains it plainly: WNT tells cells to multiply, forming ridges, and to produce EDAR, which further boosts WNT, while BMP thwarts these actions.
The abstract continues: ridges form as waves spreading from variable initiation sites, and the propagation and meeting of these waves determine the type of pattern. Science News names the three known initiation sites: the centre of the finger pad, under the nail, and the joint crease nearest the fingertip. Per Science News, by altering the relative timing, location and angle of those starting points, the team could create the three most common patterns, arches, loops and whorls, and even rarer ones. The authors conclude that a dynamic patterning system triggered at distinct sites produces the familiar pattern types and the unending variation of human fingerprints.
There is clear evidence that genes play a part. MedlinePlus describes a very rare condition, adermatoglyphia, in which people have no ridges on their fingertips, palms or soles. It is caused by changes in the SMARCAD1 gene, inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern, one altered copy being enough, and only a few affected families are known worldwide. It has been nicknamed "immigration delay disease" because of the trouble at borders that require fingerprints.
Tổng số vân: phần di truyền rõ nhấtRidge count: the most heritable part
The groundwork was laid by the geneticist Sarah B. Holt at the Galton Laboratory, University College London, in the 1950s and 1960s. According to the historian Daniel Asen, in her 1968 book she computed correlations of total finger ridge count between parents and children, identical twins, fraternal twins, other siblings and unrelated people. She concluded that the count is governed by the additive effect of many genes.
The Multifactorial Traits chapter of Human Genes and Genomes (Rosenberg and Rosenberg, 2012) gives the figures: identical twins, sharing 100% of their genes, correlate at 0.95. Fraternal twins, siblings and parent child pairs, sharing 50%, correlate at 0.49, 0.50 and 0.48. Spouses, sharing none, only 0.05. The book notes that the correlation matches the share of genes almost perfectly.
The numbers need careful reading. A parent child correlation of 0.48 describes a large group of families: children of people with many ridges tend to have many as well. It does not mean a child has 48% of the father's ridges, nor does it give the exact count of any one child. The figure for spouses, near zero though they share a home, shows that life after birth barely touches the count.
Later studies confirm it. Medland and colleagues, in PLoS Genetics in 2007, write that genetic effects account for 90 to 95% of the variation in ridge counts, and that ridge count has been considered a model polygenic trait in quantitative genetics. The study used 2,114 offspring from 922 families and found linkage to a region on chromosome 5, at 5q14.1. The NIJ book explains why the count is more heritable than the pattern type: genetically timed events are less susceptible to environmental variation.
Cách đếm số vân từ tam giác điểm tới tâm vân được vẽ kỹ trong bài cách đếm vân tay, còn chỉ số tổng số vân mười ngón có bài riêng ở bài chỉ số TFRC.
How ridges are counted from delta to core is drawn step by step in the ridge counting article, and total finger ridge count has its own piece, the TFRC index.
Pattern type is also partly inherited, but less than the count. Karmakar, Malkin and Kobyliansky, in HOMO in 2011, compared the patterns of twin pairs and found identical twins more alike in pattern type than fraternal twins, a sign of genetic factors. Wikipedia's Fingerprint article sums it up: identical twins' prints are very similar though not identical, fraternal twins' considerably less so.
Within a family it usually looks like this: a child may match the father on one finger, the mother on another, and carry a type no one else in the house has. There is no rule like "whorl father, whorl child". The 2022 genome study also found that the patterns of a person's three middle fingers tend to go together as a block, with a genetic basis for that link. The figure below is an example family to show the mix, not real data.
Which types are common and which rare is covered in the fingerprint types article. To compare prints with parents or siblings, the safest way is to photograph each fingertip up close as shown in how to photograph fingerprints, then set the same finger of each person side by side.
Song sinh cùng trứng: cùng ADN, khác vânIdentical twins: same DNA, different prints
MedlinePlus says it plainly: each person's fingerprints are unique, and even identical twins, who have the same DNA, have different fingerprints. The NIJ book calls identical twins the ultimate example of the environment's role: they share identical genetic information and very similar intrauterine environments, but on many occasions have very different patterns.
They differ at two levels. When both have the same type on a finger, the fine details still sit in different places. The NIJ book says each individual section of every ridge is unique, so any ridge arrangement, whatever its size, cannot be replicated. And when timing and stresses differ enough, the two differ in pattern type as well.
Here fingerprints do something ordinary DNA testing cannot. Weber-Lehmann and colleagues, in Forensic Science International: Genetics in 2014, write that identical twins are considered genetically identical and so cannot be told apart by standard forensic DNA testing. The team needed ultra deep sequencing to find five tiny DNA differences to separate two brothers in a paternity case. With fingerprints, the two were already different before birth.
In 2022 the groups of Sijia Wang and Denis Headon, with many others, published Li et al. in Cell. According to the abstract, genome wide scans in Han Chinese cohorts found 18 loci associated with fingerprint type across the digits, including a genetic basis for the long known correlation among the middle three fingers. A trans ethnic meta analysis found 43 loci, with nearby genes strongly enriched for general limb development pathways. A ScienceDaily report says the study analysed DNA from more than 23,000 people.
The standout gene is EVI1. The abstract says its dynamic expression during development supports a role in shaping the limbs and digits, rather than influencing skin patterning directly. Mice with reduced EVI1 developed abnormal skin patterns on their digits. The team also found fingerprint patterns genetically correlated with hand proportions: per ScienceDaily, people with whorls on both little fingers tend to have longer little fingers. For more on finger proportions, see the finger ratio article.

Because fingerprints are partly inherited, throughout the twentieth century people tried to use them to settle paternity. The historian Daniel Asen, in Law, Probability and Risk in 2019, describes forensic researchers in many places, from Austria to Japan to China, from the early twentieth century to the 1990s, pursuing the idea. In Austria, Margarete Weninger presented her approach at the Eleventh International Congress of Genetics in The Hague in 1963. In Japan, Matsukura Toyoji built his theory from the 1950s and handled at least 23 paternity cases.
But the limits showed early. As far back as 1943, Harold Cummins and Charles Midlo wrote that dermatoglyphics could claim a place only as a minor accessory in questioned paternity, as there were no laws of inheritance firm enough for rule of thumb practice. Asen writes that the considerable limits of using fingerprint patterning for genetic analysis became apparent, and by the early 1990s Chinese medico legal experts were starting to offer DNA profiling in paternity cases.
Fingerprints do not tell who a person's parents, siblings or relatives are the way a DNA test does. Two people with similar prints need not be related, since every pattern type is common, loops alone making up about 60 to 65% per the hub. Two blood relatives can have different prints, identical twins included.
Establishing kinship requires a DNA test at an accredited facility. A fingerprint is only decisive when comparing a person's prints with that same person.
Thầy Ưng Khiêm đọc phần di truyền thế nàoHow Master Ung Khiem reads the inherited part
The hub says fingertip ridges form in the womb and keep their shape for life, so the ancients read them as the signature of what you were born with: temperament, disposition, your root. Innate here means what is shaped before birth, with a share from the parents, a share from the womb and a share of chance, as the innate and acquired article explains.
So the Master reads each person as a set of prints of their own. If two siblings' prints are alike, that is noted, but it is never taken to mean they share one path in life, and prints are never used to guess who is whose parent.
The measured part is data: each finger's type, total ridge count, hand flowers, five indices. The reading is innate nature by the dou ji method, left hand weighed against right, classical physiognomy for reflection, then set beside the palm and the face. Read to understand yourself, not to be afraid.
The hub also answers a question many parents ask: this is not an IQ or talent test for children, since science does not accept that fingerprints predict intelligence or talent. The heredity of fingerprints is real and measurable, but it does not turn prints into a map of ability. Do fingerprint talent tests work covers this in depth.

Hỏi đápQuestions
Vân tay có di truyền không?Are fingerprints inherited?
Yes, partly and indirectly. Total ridge count is the most heritable, with genes explaining 90 to 95% of the variation between people. Pattern type is partly inherited. Fine details also depend on the womb environment, so no two people match.
Do children have their parents' fingerprints?
Partly. Parent and child ridge counts correlate at 0.48, about the same as siblings. For pattern type, a child may match the father on one finger, the mother on another, or have a type no one else in the family has. There is no rule like whorl father, whorl child.
Do identical twins have the same fingerprints?
No. They share DNA but not fingerprints. Their ridge counts are very close, correlating at 0.95, and their types are often alike, but the fine details always differ, and per the NIJ book the patterns are often very different too.
Can fingerprints establish paternity?
No. Some tried in the twentieth century, in Austria, Japan and China, but as early as 1943 Cummins and Midlo called dermatoglyphics only a minor aid. Today kinship is settled by DNA testing.
Gen nào quyết định vân tay?Which genes decide fingerprints?
There is no single gene. A 2022 study in Cell found 43 gene regions linked to pattern type, mostly in limb development pathways, EVI1 foremost. A 2023 study showed WNT, EDAR and BMP signals building the ridges. Genes act through timing, they do not draw the print.
If prints are inherited, can they predict a child's talent?
No. The heredity of fingerprints is real and measurable, but science does not accept that prints predict intelligence or talent. Master Ung Khiem does not sell that, the reading is classical physiognomy for reflection and self understanding.
