Xem chỉ tay tay nào: nam tả nữ hữu, tay thuận và lối xem hai tayWhich hand to read: man left, woman right, the dominant hand, and reading both

The first question any beginner asks is whether to read the left hand or the right. Folk custom answers by sex, Western palm books answer by the working hand, and Master Ung Khiem reads both. This piece goes from the origin of the saying man left, woman right, through Cheiro and Benham, to what science sees when two hands are compared.

Which hand do you read in palmistry? Folk custom says man left, woman right, from the old idea that the left is yang and the right yin. Western palm books by Cheiro and Benham read both hands: the non dominant hand for what one is born with, the dominant hand for what one has made, reversed for left handers. Master Ung Khiem asks which hand you write with, then sets both hands side by side before reading.

Ba lối trả lời cho câu hỏi xem tay nàoThree answers to the question of which hand

Ask ten palm readers and you may hear three different answers. East Asian folk custom picks the hand by sex: man left, woman right. Western palm books pick by the working hand and read both hands as two layers of one person. Master Ung Khiem follows the two hand approach, asks which hand you write with first, then sets both hands beside each other and beside the fingerprints and the face.

Nam tả nữ hữu: từ đâu ra, hiểu thế nàoMan left, woman right: origin and meaning

Nam tả nữ hữu is a four word Sino Vietnamese phrase meaning man on the left, woman on the right. In Vietnam the idea runs through many everyday customs, such as worship, arranging the family altar, weddings and palm reading. For palms, folk custom puts it simply: read a boy's left hand and a girl's right.

Many Vietnamese articles trace the saying to the myth of Pangu. Wikipedia names Xu Zheng of the Three Kingdoms period, in the Sanwu Liji, as the earliest known writer to record the Pangu story. When Pangu died, his body became the world: his left eye became the sun, his right eye the moon. The sun is yang and the moon yin, so the left belongs to yang and the right to yin.

Yin yang theory in turn places men with yang and women with yin. Put together, left is yang and right is yin, men are yang and women are yin, so men go with the left and women with the right. One explanatory article on an altar supplies site adds that left and right are counted from the inside looking out, that is, from the person's own side, not the side of someone facing them.

Ngay trong sách Trung Hoa, câu ấy cũng không phải luật cứngEven in Chinese sources the saying is no fixed rule

A 2016 article on Sohu, titled with the question of whether palm reading must always be man left, woman right, says the standard took shape among physiognomists under the old notion of nam tôn nữ ti, men above women. The same article says the hand to read depends on the person, with no fixed rule by sex, and that both hands must be read together and combined.

That article also records another Chinese division: the left hand for the inborn part, tiên thiên, tied to the years before forty, the right hand for the acquired part, hậu thiên, tied to the years after forty. So even within the East Asian tradition there is more than one way to divide the work between the hands.

Thầy đọc câu nam tả nữ hữu thế nàoHow the Master regards the saying

The Master keeps the saying as part of the culture and understands why the ancients said it, but does not use it to choose a hand. As our palm reading guide notes, he marks both hands in every book, whether the person is a man or a woman.

Lối phương Tây: tay bẩm sinh và tay làm nênThe Western approach: the inborn hand and the made hand

Western palm books do not choose by sex. Cheiro, born William John Warner in Ireland, 1866 to 1936, writes in the head line chapter of Palmistry for All (1916) that the two hands must be carefully compared, the left showing the inherited tendencies, the right the developed or cultivated qualities. The slightest change from left to right, he says, should be noted.

William G. Benham, in The Laws of Scientific Hand Reading, gives a whole section to which hand to use. He writes that the left hand is the infallible index to the natural being, the right hand records unmistakably what has been done with the talents. The left is the passive hand, the right the active. Many failures in palm reading, Benham says, come from using one hand only, because people change as they grow older and those changes are recorded in the right hand.

Benham also explains how to read the comparison: if the passive hand shows one condition and the active hand an improved state, the course has been upward, and vice versa. Cheiro gives a worked example on the head line, the three cases below.

Three ways the head line can differ between the hands of a right handed person, after Cheiro. The left hand is mirrored on the left of each pair. A bold blue line is clear, a pale one faint.
  • Alike on both hands: Cheiro writes that when the head line sits in the same place, or nearly so, on both hands, there was little or no strain in the early years.
  • Faint on the left, clear on the right: the person did not inherit a strong mental bent from either parent, but has cultivated and developed their own mind.
  • Clear on the left, faint on the right: Cheiro writes that the person has not made the most of their mental opportunities. We have softened this to a gift not yet fully used, something still within reach.

Our articles on individual lines follow the same principle when comparing hands, such as the head line, the heart line and the single crease.

Người thuận tay trái xem tay nàoWhich hand for a left handed person

Cheiro and Benham both write for the right handed majority. Benham spells out the other case: some subjects are left handed, and then one should reverse the order and consider the right as passive, the left as active. For a left handed person, the right hand keeps what one was born with and the left records what one has made.

For a left handed person the hands swap roles: the left is the working hand, recording what one has made, the right keeps what one was born with. The left hand is mirrored, thumb on the left.

Man left, woman right ignores handedness, since it chooses by sex. This is where the two approaches differ most. For a left handed man, folk custom still reads the left as the main hand, while for Benham that same left hand is the active one, recording what he has done.

Người dùng mỗi việc một tayPeople who use different hands for different tasks

Not everyone leans clearly to one side. According to Neuroscience News, reporting on the 2020 meta-analysis, about 9% of people use different hands for different tasks, and Dr Silvia Paracchini, one of the authors, noted that this share is almost as large as the share of left handers. Benham does not discuss ambidextrous people. If you write with one hand but do most things with the other, or were trained as a child to switch your writing hand, please say so in the notes for the Master when you send your photos.

Khoa học nói gì về hai bàn tayWhat science says about the two hands

Bao nhiêu người thuận tay tráiHow many people are left handed

The meta-analysis science news called the world's biggest study of left handedness, by Papadatou-Pastou and colleagues in Psychological Bulletin (2020), pooled five meta-analyses covering nearly 2.4 million people. Left handedness lies between 9.3% under the strictest criterion and 18.1% under the most lenient one, non right handedness, with a best overall estimate of 10.6%. Roughly one person in ten is left handed.

Handedness is usually measured by the writing hand. The researcher Sebastian Ocklenburg, writing about the study in Psychology Today, notes that some societies have taboos on using the left hand for writing or eating. So the writing hand is not always the natural working hand, which is why the Master asks further when needed.

In 2005 Hepper, Wells and Lynch reported in Neuropsychologia on 75 individuals who had been observed sucking their thumb as fetuses, with handedness assessed at age 10 to 12. All 60 fetuses who sucked the right thumb were right handed. Of the 15 who sucked the left thumb, 10 were left handed and 5 right handed.

This is worth keeping in mind when reading the Western approach. The working hand, which palm books treat as the hand of what one makes, already shows before birth. And the palm creases, according to Popich and Smith in Pediatric Research (1970), form between weeks 7 and 14 of fetal life, following the early flexion planes of the hand. Both hands have their lines long before we hold our first pen.

Hai bàn tay khác nhau trong nghiên cứuHow the two hands differ in research

Park, Shin, Jung and Chung, in Anatomy & Cell Biology (2010), examined both palms of 3,216 Koreans in Suwon. They found normal crease patterns more often in the left palm than the right, and the single crease more often in the right palm than the left. The paper compares anatomical sides, not handedness, so it cannot say whether the difference has anything to do with the working hand.

Fingerprints of the two hands are not identical either. In 2005 Singh, Chattopadhyay and Garg, in Forensic Science International, examined 400 rolled prints of both hands and showed that from a single whorl, using the flow of the apex ridges, the rotation of the central circles, the angles between core and delta, an examiner can tell the hand and the finger in most cases. Comparing left and right handers, a 2018 study of 390 Bulgarians by Petrova and colleagues found the same order of pattern types on both hands in both groups, differing only in the shares on individual fingers, with statistically significant differences only in women.

Tóm lại cho rõTo be clear

The two hands really do differ, measurably: creases and fingerprints both vary between left and right. But assigning one hand to the inborn and the other to the made is a palm book convention, not a scientific finding. Wikipedia sums up that palmistry is widely viewed as a pseudoscience because interpretations contradict each other and its predictions lack evidence. The question of which hand to read, answered differently by folk custom and Western books, is itself an example.

Cách Thầy Ưng Khiêm xem: cả hai tay, đặt cạnh nhauHow Master Ung Khiem reads: both hands, side by side

The Sinh Trac Tam Tuong hub answers why both hands must be photographed in the Master's words: The left and right hands usually tell two stories: one keeps what you were born with, the other records what you have made of it. Only side by side can the Master see where you have changed. So the Master does not choose a hand by sex. He records both hands before reading and asks which hand you favour. The capture app on the page has a Dominant hand field for exactly this. For a left handed person the two hands swap roles.

When comparing, the Master follows the last step of our palm reading guide: a line clear on the dominant hand but faint on the other is something one has built, a line clear on the non dominant hand but faint on the dominant one is an inborn gift not yet used. Only with both hands in view does he interpret.

Fingerprints are read on both hands too. Prints are the layer that never changes, palm lines change slowly over the years, and the complexion of the face shifts year by year. In the book the fingerprint reading weighs the left hand against the right, and the palm reading covers both palms, so differences between the hands show at both layers.

Thầy tách hai phần. Phần đo gồm năm điều: tay nào là tay thuận, ảnh rõ cả hai tay, ghi từng đường trên mỗi tay, chỗ hai tay giống nhau, và chỗ hai tay khác nhau. Phần luận chỉ bắt đầu khi phần đo xong, và luôn đặt cạnh vân tay, dáng tay, tướng mặt, và nếu có thì lá số song hệ Tử Vi và Bát Tự.

The Master separates two parts. Measuring covers five things: which hand is dominant, clear photos of both hands, each line noted on each hand, where the hands agree, and where they differ. Reading begins only once measuring is done, and always beside the fingerprints, the hand shape, the face, and where available the twin Tu Vi and Bazi charts.

Hands that differ are nothing to worry about. They simply show that a person has lived, learned and changed. Knowing what one brought from the start and what one has built helps in seeing what to keep and what to grow.

To compare two hands, both photos must meet the same standard, or one hand will look clearer simply because the light was better. The hub asks for the whole hand, fingers slightly apart, palm flat, evenly lit.

Hỏi đápQuestions

Xem chỉ tay tay nào, trái hay phải?Which hand should be read, left or right?

Folk custom says man left, woman right. Western books by Cheiro and Benham read both: the non dominant hand for the inborn, the dominant for what one has made. Master Ung Khiem reads both, side by side.

Nam tả nữ hữu nghĩa là gì?What does man left, woman right mean?

Man on the left, woman on the right, from the ideas that the left is yang and the right yin, and that men are yang and women yin. Many articles trace it to Pangu, whose left eye became the sun and right eye the moon.

Người thuận tay trái xem tay nào?Which hand for a left handed person?

Benham says reverse the order: the right is the passive hand, keeping the inborn, the left the active hand, recording what one has made. The Master swaps the roles the same way.

Is it a problem if my two palms differ?

No. The two hands are rarely identical, and research finds creases and fingerprints differ between left and right. Palm books read the difference as a sign of how a person has changed over the years.

Bao nhiêu người thuận tay trái?How many people are left handed?

A 2020 meta-analysis of nearly 2.4 million people puts it at about 10.6%, ranging from 9.3% to 18.1% depending on the criterion. About 9% of people use different hands for different tasks.

Có cần chụp cả hai tay không?Do I need to photograph both hands?

Yes. The Master marks both hands in every book. Photograph both in the same place and light, and set your dominant hand in the app so the comparison is fair.

The saying man left, woman right and the Pangu myth are recorded to understand the culture, not as readings. Cheiro's and Benham's readings are rendered in Vietnamese with harsh old wording softened, adding no new meaning. The Master's two hand convention is consistent with the Sinh Trac Tam Tuong hub and our published palm articles. Scientific figures follow the sources above. Illustrations drawn by UK MASTER ACADEMY for this article, the hand drawn as a right palm seen face on, the left hand mirrored. Updated as new research appears.
