IOverview
Cham Ahier is the name of the Cham community whose religion continues the Shaivism of the kingdom of Champa. In official Vietnamese documents the religion is called Brahmanism, Ba La Mon giao, and its followers the Brahmanist Cham.
It is the only branch of Hinduism with deep historical roots in what is now Vietnam, yet over the centuries it has become a religion of its own: deified Cham kings and local deities are worshipped within a Shaiva frame, the Cham calendar is used, and it has its own priesthood. Cham Ahier always forms a pair with Cham Awal, or Cham Bani, whose religion is a localised Islam.
IIHistory
Shaivism reached Champa by sea in the early centuries of the Common Era and became its state religion, as UNESCO's file on My Son notes. As Champa shifted south, the region of Panduranga, former Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan, became the last place the religion was kept. In the same period Islam entered Cham society, and the two traditions settled into the Ahier and Awal pairing.

IIITeachings and Distinctives
The frame is still Shaiva: the Cham towers are temples, and the objects of worship are the linga and yoni or the mukhalinga. But most of those honoured are Cham: Po Inu Nagar, Mother of the Land, deified kings such as Po Klaung Garai and Po Rome, and lineage ancestors. By a common explanation, Ahier and Awal come from two Arabic words meaning later and earlier, suggesting the pair took shape in relation to each other.
Cham Ahier differs greatly from Hinduism in India. The varna and jati system did not carry over. The pantheon is tied to Cham kings and local deities unknown in India. The library describes these differences without saying which side is purer.
IVThe Priesthood
| Office | Role |
|---|---|
| Po Adhia, the chief priest | Heads the Basaih and presides over the greatest rites, including entry into the Kut |
| Po Tapah, deputy chief priest | Second rank after the Po Adhia |
| Basaih, also written Paseh | Priests who officiate at temples, towers and funerals. Ranked as Basaih Tahwak, Basaih Liah and Basaih Ndung Akaok. Literate in Cham script and keepers of handwritten ritual manuscripts |
| Kadhar | Leads rites for folk deities |
| Muk Pajau | Female officiant for village deity rites |
| Muk Rija | Lineage medium who performs the Rija rites for ancestors |
VPractice, Liturgy and Life
Kate is the greatest festival, honouring deities, kings and ancestors. The Po Klong Garai heritage file places it on the 30th day of the 6th month and the 1st to 10th days of the 7th month of the Cham calendar, which in 2024 fell in early October. It is held at the Po Klong Garai and Po Rome towers and the Po Inu Nagar shrine, then continues in villages and homes. It opens with a procession carrying the deity's garments from the village to the tower, followed by the opening of the tower, the bathing of the statue, the dressing and the main ceremony.
Besides Kate there is Chabun in the 9th Cham month, honouring the Mother deities, and Rija Nagar at the start of the year to send away misfortune.
The dead are cremated, sometimes after a period of temporary burial. Nine fragments of frontal bone are kept in a box called a klaong. When conditions allow, the family holds the rite of entry into the Kut, placing them in the lineage cemetery of the mother's side, with the Po Adhia presiding at midnight. According to VnExpress, the Cham believe the soul joins the ancestors only once the bones enter the Kut.
VIOrganisation and Figures
Brahmanism is on the list of sixteen religions recognised or registered by the state. The Council of Cham Brahmanist Dignitaries of Ninh Thuan was recognised by Decision 1192/QD-UBND of 18 June 2012. The council for Binh Thuan was recognised by Decision 2605/QD-UBND of 19 December 2012. Both appear on the list attached to Ministry of Home Affairs Official Letter 6955/BNV-TGCP of 28 December 2020.

VIIToday
The Cham Ahier live mainly in Cham villages of former Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan. After the administrative reorganisation of 1 July 2025, Ninh Thuan became part of Khanh Hoa province and Binh Thuan part of Lam Dong.
Kate is now both a religious rite and a community festival that draws many visitors. The Po Nagar towers became a special national monument in 2025. The priests keep handwritten manuscripts in Cham script, and passing on the script and ritual knowledge to the young is a concern researchers often raise. Ties with the Cham Awal remain close, and some rites, such as prayers for rain, are performed by priests of both communities together.
