From the seafront square of Cidade Velha, a walk north along Rua Banana leads to a small whitewashed church with a tiled roof, a semicircular arched doorway, and a low bell tower to one side. Only by stepping into the side chapel and looking up does the feature that made the building famous come into view: stone ribs meeting at a boss that still retains its painted colors.

This is Our Lady of the Rosary Church (Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário), built in 1495 and recognized as the oldest church in Cape Verde. The vast majority of Cape Verdeans are Roman Catholic, and the faith first took root on the archipelago here in Cidade Velha, meaning the Old Town. The library chose this modest church as the sole representative entry for Cape Verde because it marks the beginning of Catholic life on the islands, and because more than five centuries later it remains an active parish church celebrating Sunday Mass.

IName, the Rosary Title, and Its Place in the Diocese

Belonging to the Roman Catholic Church, this is a parish church in the Diocese of Santiago de Cabo Verde, dedicated to the Virgin Mary under the title of Our Lady of the Rosary (Nossa Senhora do Rosário). In Portuguese, rosário refers to the prayer beads on which Catholics count prayers while meditating on key events in the lives of Jesus and Mary. Because the word derives from a garland of roses, the title is also connected to the image of the rose.

Its ecclesiastical rank should also be kept clear. This building is not a cathedral. The seat of the Bishop of Cape Verde today is in the nearby capital city of Praia. Our Lady of the Rosary is a local parish church serving the townspeople, and that modest role has kept it in continuous use. According to observador.pt, following its recent restoration, the keys of the church were handed back to the diocese on July 11, 2020, the day the works concluded, and wondermondo.com notes that Sunday Mass continues to be celebrated here.

According to the tradition

In Catholic practice, the Rosary is a form of prayer accessible to everyone, requiring neither books nor literacy, only a string of beads. Those praying repeat the Hail Mary in sets of ten, called decades, each paired with a mystery from the life of Jesus. In the General Roman Calendar, the Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary falls on October 7, and the entire month of October is observed as the Month of the Rosary. Venerating Mary does not mean worshipping a separate deity, but asking her intercession before God.

According to the historical record

Regarding its claim as the oldest, sources state the distinction at different scales. The Government of Cape Verde website and the newspaper observador.pt describe it simply as the oldest church in Cape Verde, built roughly thirty years after the islands were discovered, and the oldest intact historical building in Cidade Velha. The site wondermondo.com goes further, calling it the oldest surviving colonial church in the world. The library follows the phrasing of the official Cape Verdean sources while noting the broader claim so readers are aware of both.

A common misunderstanding

Readers who learn that Cidade Velha was once an episcopal see sometimes assume that Our Lady of the Rosary was the old cathedral. It was not. The UNESCO dossier notes that the heritage property contains two churches. The former cathedral is a separate, much larger structure built later and now standing in ruins. Our Lady of the Rosary is smaller, older, and the one that kept its roof, its bell, and its congregation.

For another of the earliest Portuguese churches in Africa built in the Manueline style, readers can turn to Chapel of Nossa Senhora de Baluarte, Island of Mozambique on the opposite coast of the continent. About a century later, and now a major pilgrimage center in Angola, is Our Lady of Muxima Church. For the Rosary title itself and twentieth-century Marian devotion, see Sanctuary of Fátima.

IIOver Five Centuries in the Ribeira Grande Valley

Published historical documentation on the church itself is concise. The best-documented points are its founding date, its architectural features, and its recent restoration. For the intervening centuries from the 1600s to the 1900s, available sources say very little, and the library does not fill that gap with conjecture. This article also leaves aside the commercial and military history of the town, tracing only the life of the place of worship.

  • 1493First chapel on the site
According to wondermondo.com, a small chapel was erected on this spot. The Government of Cape Verde website and observador.pt likewise confirm that the 1495 church was built on the site where a small Gothic chapel already stood, which now forms part of the present structure.
  • 1495Church built
The church was constructed, or according to wondermondo.com enlarged into its present form. Both the Government of Cape Verde website and observador.pt give 1495 as the founding year.
  • 16th centuryGothic chapel and burials
The government page notes that the church displays 16th-century architectural features, including a Gothic chapel with Manueline influence. Wondermondo.com records that prominent local figures were buried here and that learned, musically gifted native African priests served the parish.
  • 17th centurySermons of Father António Vieira
Both observador.pt and expressodasilhas.cv record that the Jesuit priest António Vieira, the renowned preacher of Portuguese literature, preached in this church during his stay on Santiago Island.
  • 2009UNESCO World Heritage inscription
Cidade Velha, Historic Centre of Ribeira Grande, was inscribed on the World Heritage List under reference number 1310. On June 26 of the same year, Cidade Velha was elected one of the Seven Wonders of Portuguese Origin in the World, according to observador.pt and expressodasilhas.cv.
  • 2018Restoration begins
In December 2018, restoration works began under Cape Verde's National Plan for the Rehabilitation of Historic and Religious Buildings, funded by the Cape Verde Tourism Fund with Portuguese support.
  • 2020Discovery of saint statues and reopening
In late May 2020, excavations inside the Gothic chapel uncovered images of saints, prompting an emergency archaeological excavation by the Cultural Heritage Institute of Cape Verde (IPC). The project concluded on July 11, and the keys were returned to the diocese the same day after twenty months of work.
According to the historical record

Two points where the sources differ slightly are recorded here in full. First is the starting date: wondermondo.com separates two dates, a chapel in 1493 and the church in 1495, whereas official sources such as governo.cv and observador.pt cite 1495 while explicitly stating that the church was built on the site of an earlier small Gothic chapel that is now integrated into the current building. The two accounts therefore complement each other.

Second is the cross on the vault boss. The Government of Cape Verde website describes it as the cross of the Portuguese Crown, while wondermondo.com identifies it as the emblem of the Order of Christ (Ordem de Cristo), the military-religious order that sponsored Portuguese maritime voyages of that era. Both descriptions refer to the same cross emblem associated with the Portuguese monarchy and the Order of Christ.

Regarding UNESCO inscription, the library records the year 2009 as listed on the UNESCO website.

IIIA Single-Nave Church and a Rib-Vaulted Chapel

Seen from the outside, the building is as plain as a village church in southern Portugal: a rectangular floor plan, a single nave, whitewashed walls reinforced by exterior buttresses, and a main facade portal formed by a semicircular arch resting on projecting stone imposts and topped by a cornice. According to the Government of Cape Verde website, the high altar is raised on a platform of five steps. The rarest feature lies to the side: a Gothic chapel with Manueline influence that formed the original core of the church, opening into the nave through a pointed arch flanked by two zoomorphic gargoyles and covered by a ribbed vault with polychrome painted bosses.

The Manueline style (Manuelino) is the late Portuguese Gothic idiom of around 1500, named after the reigning monarch of the time. The government website calls the church one of the rare examples of Gothic architecture in sub-Saharan Africa. The word rare here has a precise technical meaning: stone rib vaulting belonged to medieval European masons' workshops, and very few buildings using that technique were erected south of the Sahara before Gothic gave way to later styles.

Semicircular arched portal

The main doorway on the facade is a simple round arch resting on projecting stone imposts with a cornice above, unadorned and in keeping with a small parish church.

Gothic side chapel

The oldest and most prized section, showing Manueline traits and opening into the nave through a pointed arch. Its restoration was funded by Portuguese Cooperation through the Camões Institute, according to governo.cv and observador.pt.

Two zoomorphic gargoyles

Two animal-shaped stone spouts flank the pointed arch of the side chapel, a familiar detail of European Gothic churches seldom seen in this region.

Ribbed vault ceiling

Stone ribs converge on polychrome painted keystones. One boss bears a cross described by sources as the emblem of the Portuguese Crown or of the Order of Christ.

Altar raised on five steps

The main altar stands five steps above the floor of the nave, as described on the Government of Cape Verde website.

Published sources do not provide exact dimensions for the church. Decorative tiles and gravestones inside mentioned in some travel guides are likewise not detailed in the verified sources and are omitted here. IVLandform and Orientation

The late-fifteenth-century Portuguese builders who raised this church knew nothing of a feng shui compass, and the Catholic Church does not teach geomancy. The only directional preference in Christian tradition is liturgical orientation, placing the sanctuary toward the east, the direction of the rising sun, as a sign of the Risen Christ. For Our Lady of the Rosary, available sources do not state which direction the sanctuary faces, so the library makes no guess. The paragraphs below look at the Ribeira Grande valley through traditional Vietnamese landform reading so readers familiar with that tradition have a point of comparison. None of it comes from diocesan or UNESCO documents.

Terrain and orientation

The clearest feature is a valley opening to the sea. Ribeira Grande means big stream. It is a ravine about 100 meters deep according to wondermondo.com, cut into the southern slope of Santiago Island, bordered by high, dry rock walls on either side while groundwater on the valley floor sustains bananas, coconut palms, and sugarcane. The town sits where the ravine meets the ocean, and the church stands set back along Rua Banana northwest of the center. A reader trained in the Vietnamese tradition would immediately see the two canyon walls as the Azure Dragon and White Tiger arms embracing the middle ground, and the green valley floor as a place that shelters from wind. On an island where trade winds blow almost year-round, a spot sheltered from wind and supplied with water is where people can live, which is the practical reason the settlement grew here.

Second is water. The stream runs from the interior hills down to the sea, passing in front of the rows of houses. Traditional geomancy favors slow, winding water in front of a shrine and dislikes a straight torrent. Because the stream here is seasonal and remains a dry stone bed for much of the year, the water element of the valley lies more in the underground water table feeding the gardens than in surface flow. We note this to show that applying a reading born in monsoon lands to an arid island requires caution.

Third is its setback position. Rather than standing right at the surf line, the church retreats into the ravine with the island's mountain mass behind it and the valley opening southward toward the sea. Vietnamese tradition calls this backing onto mountain and facing water, and considers a shrine tucked further inland to be better protected and longer-lasting. History matches that observation on one count: according to observador.pt, this is the oldest building in the town to have survived intact, though the correspondence is purely physical.

Finally, there is scale. A single nave, thick walls, and a low roof fit a narrow ravine. Traditional rules hold that a building should match its terrain, since an oversized hall in a narrow valley overwhelms the site. Fifteenth-century masons built on a small scale because the population was small and materials were scarce, resulting in a proportion that feels immediately familiar to a Vietnamese eye.

VFeast of Our Lady of the Rosary and the Liturgical Year

As a Roman Catholic parish church, the building follows the General Roman Calendar, reckoned by the solar calendar. Its patronal day is the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, the title to which it is dedicated. To be candid, available sources do not describe how the patronal feast is celebrated locally in Cidade Velha or whether a procession takes place, so the table below lists only the dates from the universal calendar and what the sources explicitly confirm.

Only the Rosary dedication and Sunday Mass are specifically tied to this church in the cited sources. The remaining entries are universal Catholic observances. Source: General Roman Calendar of the Catholic Church, wondermondo.com..

Getting there
The church stands on Rua Banana, northwest of the center of Cidade Velha in the municipality of Ribeira Grande de Santiago on the south coast of Santiago Island. From the capital city of Praia, a coastal road runs west to the town, and from the seafront square a short walk up the valley leads to the church.

When you arrive

Because this is an active parish church where townspeople gather for Sunday morning Mass, standard church etiquette applies: dress modestly, remove hats, keep quiet, and do not step onto the five altar steps. When Mass is underway, visitors who have come to see the architecture should stand at the back and wait until the service concludes before entering the Gothic side chapel. The rib vault and painted bosses were recently restored, so visitors should not touch the stone or whitewashed walls. The entire town is a heritage site paved with historic cobblestones, best explored on foot.
