The most revered pilgrimage shrine and Islamic architectural masterpiece in northern Afghanistan at the center of Mazar-i-Sharif, first built in 1136 under Seljuk Sultan Ahmed Sanjar and magnificently reconstructed in 1481 under Timurid Sultan Husayn Bayqarah and vizier Ali-Shir Nava'i. It is celebrated for its turquoise double domes, polychrome tiled Iwan portals, thousands of pure white doves and the Janda Bala banner-raising rite at Nowruz.
