IIIFive Classical Principles of Altar Arrangement and Prayer
Classical manuals emphasize inner reverence (tam thanh) and clean, fresh offerings over ostentatious feasts or burning oversized paper effigies.
In Vietnamese household liturgy, the Earth Deity and Tutelary Spirits govern the residence, so they are always invoked first to grant passage before inviting departed ancestors.
Viewed from the ancestral seat looking outward: East is on the petitioner’s right (Flower Vase) and West is on the petitioner’s left (Five-Fruit Tray).
Incense sticks (1, 3 or 5), flower stems and retained incense roots after year-end trimming follow odd Yang numbers symbolizing living continuity.
Outdoor New Year’s Eve prayers honor the rotating 12 Year Commissioners (Quan Hanh Khien). Our calendar engine matches the outgoing and incoming lords automatically for any year.
?Quick Questions
Is personal household information entered into the scroll sent to any server?
No. Every name, birth year, family member and address you type is saved exclusively in your own browser’s localStorage on your phone or computer. Nothing is transmitted over the network.
Can I print a clean blank ritual scroll with dotted lines to handwrite later?
Yes. Leave the name and address fields empty (or click Clear fields), choose your ceremony date, and click Print A4 Scroll. Empty fields automatically format into neat dotted lines for handwriting.
Why does the 2027 Tet calendar show New Year’s Eve on the 29th of the Twelfth Month instead of the 30th?
By astronomical calculation for UTC+7 (Vietnam Standard Time), the Twelfth Lunar Month of the Binh Ngo Year has 29 days. Friday, February 5, 2027 (29th of the 12th Month) is therefore the final day of the lunar year.
What does Altar Mode do when standing before the altar with a phone?
Altar Mode expands the personalized scroll to full screen, hides menus, lets you enlarge serif text (A+) or switch to a warm dark background, and activates the Screen WakeLock API so your phone screen never dims mid-prayer.
Should Buddhist invocations be read by families of other traditions?
Traditional folk scrolls open and close with three recitations of Nam mo A Di Da Phat due to centuries of Three-Teachings harmony. Non-Buddhist households venerating ancestors may simply bow three times and begin directly with the salutation to Heaven, Earth and Ancestors.
How do I print both the prayer scroll and the altar layout diagram?
Keep the checkbox "Include Page 2 when printing" ticked on the toolbar before clicking Print A4 Scroll. Page 1 prints the bordered ritual scroll, and Page 2 prints the SVG altar diagram alongside your offering checklist.
