Năm 1747 một nông dân tên Alejandro Colindres nhặt được trên cánh đồng một tượng Đức Mẹ bằng gỗ tuyết tùng chỉ cao chừng 6 cm, về sau được tôn làm Đức Mẹ Suyapa, bổn mạng Honduras. Tượng được giữ trong nhà nguyện nhỏ thời thuộc địa, còn bên cạnh là vương cung thánh đường tân Gothic lớn đặt đá năm 1954, dài 93 m, được nâng hàng basilica minor năm 2015. Mỗi dịp lễ 3 tháng 2, hàng trăm nghìn tới hơn một triệu khách hành hương đổ về làng Suyapa bên rìa Tegucigalpa.
