Broad Street is the main thoroughfare running along the spine of the Monrovia peninsula. Where it meets Centre Street and Ashmun Street, on a rise of high ground known locally as Providence Hill, two church buildings stand side by side. One is small and built of stone, with the plain lines of a North American town chapel from two centuries ago. The other is much larger and newer, ringing with hymns on Sunday mornings.

This is Providence Baptist Church, the oldest congregation in Liberia, belonging to the Baptist denomination of Protestantism. Liberia is a predominantly Christian nation where Protestant churches make up the majority alongside Muslim and indigenous religious communities. The library selected this site as the sole representative of Liberia because it is the root of the country's Baptist community: out of this congregation grew the national Baptist convention of Liberia and a theological seminary. The old stone church now holds the title of National Shrine.

IThe Name Providence and the Mother Church of Liberian Baptists

The English word Providence refers to divine guidance and care over human life. The founding believers gave this name to their congregation, and the same name was given to the small island in the Mesurado River where they landed at the start of 1822, Providence Island. The high ground where the church stands today is called Providence Hill.

The founder remembered first of all is the Reverend Lott Carey, an African American Baptist minister from Richmond, Virginia. Joining him were Collin Teague, Joseph Langford, and their families, making seven original members sent out under the Richmond African Baptist Missionary Society. The church's history page records that the congregation was organized in 1821 in Richmond, meaning it was formed before boarding ship and carried across the Atlantic as a living church. The same page notes that the congregation gave birth to the Liberia Baptist Missionary and Educational Convention, the national body of Liberian Baptists, and founded the Liberia Baptist Theological Seminary to train pastors.

According to the tradition

Baptists form a Protestant tradition that took shape in the 17th century. The name comes from the rite of baptism. Baptists hold that only those who personally profess their faith should receive baptism, and that it should be administered by full immersion in water, so they do not baptize infants. Scripture is the highest authority. Each local congregation governs its own affairs and calls its own pastor, with no bishop above it.

A Baptist church therefore has no veneration of saints, no statues, and no altar in the Catholic sense. The focal point of the sanctuary is the pulpit, where the Bible is read and preached, accompanied by a baptismal pool. The two ordinances observed are baptism and the Lord's Supper (Holy Communion), the breaking of bread in remembrance of Jesus's Last Supper.

According to the historical record

The standing of the congregation is confirmed by external sources. The newspaper frontpageafricaonline.com calls it the oldest church in Liberia. The site religionnews.com describes it as the oldest Baptist church in the country and the second oldest in Africa. Lott Carey's name was later given to an African American Baptist foreign mission convention, and religionnews.com reported on a pilgrimage bearing his name that visited the church during its bicentennial.

A common misunderstanding

Some sources write that the church sits on Providence Island. The site madisonchurchgr.org states this. In reality, Providence Island is only where the founding group came ashore in 1822. The church stands on the mainland peninsula at the corner of Broad Street, Centre Street, and Ashmun Street, just as the church's own contact page states.

A second point of confusion concerns the two buildings. The building designated a National Shrine is the old stone church completed in 1839, not the large sanctuary beside it. The large sanctuary is the newer church named The Ark, dedicated in 1976, where the congregation gathers for weekly worship today.

Further along the West African coast stands another Protestant church from the same era, built in the early 19th century in a coastal settlement city: St. George's Cathedral, Freetown in Sierra Leone. Freetown belongs to the Anglican Communion, with a bishop and a liturgical calendar. Providence is Baptist, congregational in governance, and serves as the mother church of Liberian Baptists.

IIFrom Richmond to Providence Hill: Two Centuries of a Congregation

The history of Providence is the history of a congregation first and a building second. The congregation existed before the city itself: it was organized on the far side of the ocean, then traveled with its founders to a coast that had no church at all. The milestones below are drawn primarily from the church's own history page, with differing dates from other sources noted in the historical notes box.

  • 1821Congregation formed in Richmond
Rev. Lott Carey, together with Collin Teague, Joseph Langford, and their families, organized the congregation in Richmond, Virginia before sailing for West Africa.
  • January 1822Arrival at Providence Island
The founding group landed on Providence Island in the Mesurado River. The congregation began gathering for worship on West African soil from this point.
  • October 1825First sanctuary dedicated
According to the church's website. The site madisonchurchgr.org records that the first church building was erected in 1828.
  • 1839Completion of the stone church
The stone church still standing on Broad Street was completed, regarded as the oldest standing permanent building in Liberia and the oldest standing Baptist church building in Africa, bearing the epithet The Cornerstone of the Nation. Onlybyland.com describes its design as early American architecture rarely seen outside the United States.
  • 1847A page in the nation's history
According to the church's website, Liberia's founding declaration was signed inside this stone sanctuary on July 26, 1847 (one travel site mistakenly writes 1848).
  • 1968Construction of the Lott Carey Annex
Under Pastor Dr. John B. Falconer, after membership passed 300, an annex named for the founding pastor was built on the grounds for Sunday School classes and church fellowships. Deaconesses were instituted for the first time, and the church launched Liberia's first church public radio ministry.
  • 1975 and 1976National Shrine and the new sanctuary
In 1975 the old stone building was declared a National Shrine according to the church's website. On July 18, 1976, under Pastor Dr. E. Toimu A. Reeves, the new sanctuary named The Ark was dedicated right beside it.
  • 2021Bicentennial celebration
The congregation celebrated its 200th anniversary under the theme Bridge to Providence. The newspaper frontpageafricaonline.com reports that the first quarter of the anniversary year ran from February 14 to March 28, 2021.
According to the historical record

Sources differ on several points. Founding year: the church's website gives 1821, counting from when the congregation was formed in Richmond. Religionnews.com gives 1822, counting from when the founders arrived on the coast. Both dates are accurate under their respective reckonings, and this article follows the congregation's own reckoning, which is built into the address of its official website.

First sanctuary: dedicated in October 1825 according to the church, or built in 1828 according to madisonchurchgr.org. The library follows the church's record.

The newspaper thenewdawnliberia.com reported during the bicentennial that the church intended to submit a nomination for UNESCO World Heritage listing for the old building. That was a stated plan, and the library has found no source indicating that a dossier has been submitted.

IIIThe Old Stone Church and the New Sanctuary The Ark

The Providence compound holds two generations of buildings standing side by side, separated by more than a hundred and thirty years. The older layer is the 1839 stone church. The site onlybyland.com describes it as early American architecture, a style rarely encountered outside the United States. The reason is straightforward: its builders carried in memory the meetinghouses they had known in Virginia, plain, thick-walled, without a tall steeple or ornament.

The newer layer is The Ark, dedicated in 1976. In the Bible, the word Ark refers both to Noah's vessel and to the Ark of the Covenant. The church's website uses this name for the new sanctuary without further commentary. This is where the congregation gathers every Sunday.

The library must state a gap plainly. None of the sources accessible to the library describe the old stone building in architectural detail: there are no measurements, floor counts, or clear notes on a bell tower, nor is there a seating capacity for The Ark. This article leaves those fields blank rather than guessing.

IVLandform and Orientation

For Baptists, believers can gather on any piece of ground so long as they have the Bible and one another. Protestantism does not teach geomancy, and Baptists are simpler still in spatial rules than many other denominations: they do not require a chancel to face east as in ancient Western liturgical custom. Inside a Baptist sanctuary, every row of pews faces the pulpit and the baptismal pool, while the building's alignment follows the street grid and lot. The sources consulted by the library do not record which compass direction the two buildings at Providence face, so this article makes no claim. What follows below has nothing to do with the doctrine of the church. It is how a Vietnamese reader schooled in traditional landform reading would look at the Monrovia peninsula, offered by the library as a side comparison and absent from any church document.

Terrain and orientation

Monrovia occupies a long, narrow peninsula. To the south lies the Atlantic Ocean, to the north lie the Mesurado River and the calm lagoon behind the river mouth, and at the western tip Cape Mesurado rises boldly into the sea. Vietnamese landform readers call a strip of land flanked by two waters twin waters escorting a ridge (luong thuy giap). Traditional manuals say that in such a formation vital breath travels along the spine of the ridge, and the most favorable spot is where the spine swells upward. Broad Street runs right along the spine of the peninsula, and Providence Hill is one of its rises.

Second is the contrast between two waters of different temper. The southern face is open ocean where heavy surf strikes directly, which traditional Vietnamese reading regards as restless water that tires whatever faces it head-on. The northern face is river and sheltered lagoon where water settles and small craft can moor. In 1822 the founding group came ashore on the calm side, on Providence Island in the river. Geomancy would say they chose the side where vital breath gathers. A seafarer's reason is simpler: boats need shelter from the swell.

Third is the move from island to hill. The congregation began on a low island in the river and then moved up onto high ground on the peninsula. Old Vietnamese villages often followed the same sequence, landing first and mound second: stepping off boats at the wharf, then raising the communal hall or temple on a mound above flood level where it could be seen from afar. Two places half a world apart arrived at the same habit because both lived beside great waters.

Finally, old and new standing side by side. When erecting The Ark, the congregation did not tear down the 1839 stone church, leaving it standing right next door. Vietnamese families preserve an ancestral hall beside a newer house with the same thought: so long as the root remains, the breath of the lineage is unbroken. Here the kinship lies in human sentiment rather than geomantic rules.

VSunday Worship and Protestant Observances

Baptists do not keep a calendar of saints or a patronal feast day. The congregation's year revolves around Sunday worship with preaching and choir hymns, along with the major Christian observances kept across Protestant churches on the Gregorian calendar, with Easter moving annually. Because the library could not access a published annual schedule specific to Providence, the table below lists general Protestant observances together with two congregation-specific dates mentioned in the sources. Only dates are listed.

The first three rows follow the general Protestant calendar. The last two rows are milestones specific to Providence, recorded strictly to the extent reported in the sources. Source: providencebaptistchurch1821.wordpress.com, frontpageafricaonline.com, general Protestant liturgical calendar..

Baptism and the Lord's Supper are not tied to a single annual date. Each Baptist congregation sets its own schedule, and consulted sources do not record Providence's specific custom. Since July 2003, the 23rd senior pastor of the congregation has been the Reverend Dr. Samuel B. Reeves Jr., according to the church's website.

The library found no sources regarding Vietnamese community activities at this church and therefore omits a diaspora section.

Providence is an active worshipping congregation, not a museum. On Sunday mornings worshippers dress formally, and visitors should also dress modestly and neatly. During worship services, please sit in the rear pews, avoid walking around, and do not step onto the pulpit platform. If you wish to view the old 1839 stone church, ask church staff beforehand, as that building is a designated National Shrine. Always ask permission before taking photographs inside or photographing people in prayer.

?Quick Questions

What denomination does Providence Baptist Church in Monrovia belong to

It belongs to the Baptist denomination of Protestantism. Baptists administer baptism only to believers who personally profess faith, by full immersion in water, and each local congregation is self-governing. The church has no veneration of saints and no statues. This congregation gave birth to the national convention of Liberian Baptists.

When was Providence Baptist Church founded

The church's website records that the congregation was organized in 1821 in Richmond, Virginia, and arrived at Providence Island on the Mesurado River in January 1822. Consequently, some sources give 1821 and others give 1822, depending on whether they count from its formation or its arrival. The surviving stone church was completed in 1839.

Who founded Providence Baptist Church

The Reverend Lott Carey, an African American Baptist minister from Richmond, together with Collin Teague, Joseph Langford, and their families. The spelling of their names varies across sources, with some writing Lot Cary or Teage. Lott Carey's name is also borne by the 1968 annex on the church grounds.

What is The Ark in Monrovia

The Ark is the name of the newer sanctuary of Providence Baptist Church, dedicated on July 18, 1976 and standing right beside the 1839 stone church. It serves as the congregation's Sunday worship space today. In the Bible, the word Ark refers to Noah's vessel and to the Ark of the Covenant.

Is Providence Baptist Church located on Providence Island

No. Providence Island in the Mesurado River is where the founding group landed in 1822, whereas the church stands on the mainland peninsula at the corner of Broad Street, Centre Street, and Ashmun Street, on the rise called Providence Hill. Some websites confuse the two places because both carry the name Providence.
