Set amid the green coconut groves and tidal creeks of Tiên Thủy Commune, Vĩnh Long Province (formerly Châu Thành District, Bến Tre Province, and earlier the Sóc Sải area of Hàm Long District, Kiến Hòa Province), the Châu Minh Holy See stands as the central seat of the Cao Đài Tiên Thiên church. Growing out of the Châu Minh Đàn sanctuary established in the 1930s, this site was chosen in 1955 for the construction of the central Mother Temple, completed between 1956 and 1958, and celebrated the inauguration of its newly rebuilt Three Palaces sanctuary in 2016, closely tied to the Vô Vi contemplative tradition and the legacy of founding elders Phan Văn Tòng and Nguyễn Bửu Tài in the history of Caodaism.

ISite and orientation

Terrain and orientation

The place names Tiên Thủy (Immortal Water) and former Hàm Long (Dragon Holding a Pearl) are celebrated in a four-line verse cherished by Tiên Thiên adherents describing immortal waters sprinkling sweet dew and a dragon holding a pearl in its mouth. On the ground of Bảo Island, Tiên Thủy lies on a fertile alluvial strip nourished year-round by the Hàm Luông River and a network of inland canals. Freshwater channels branching into small creeks around Sóc Sải create a gentle encircling water formation, keeping the energy of the land moist and tranquil.

Unlike the Bến Tre Holy See situated in the middle of a busy provincial town, the Châu Minh Holy See sits in a spacious rural orchard setting with an initial master-planned area of roughly 113,000 square meters. The surrounding canopy of coconut palms and fruit gardens on all four sides preserves the quiet seclusion needed for inner contemplative cultivation, which lies at the heart of the Tiên Thiên lineage.

Stepping through the Main Gate (Chánh Môn) across Châu Môn Bridge and Nam Phương Avenue, the approach axis toward the Great Temple unfolds through layered landscape features including the Triangular Pond (Tam Giác Hồ) with Three-Peak Rock (Hòn Tam Sơn), the Sun Pond (Nhựt Hồ) and Moon Pond (Nguyệt Hồ) on either side, and a 28-meter Banner Pole (Trụ Phướn) before reaching the porch of Hiệp Thiên Đài. Guiding the flow of qi across a bridge and water ponds settles the mind of arriving pilgrims while forming a water-gathering bright hall (minh đường) directly in front of the Three Palaces facade.

IIHistory across periods

  • 1927Formation of the Tiên Thiên branch
The Cao Đài Tiên Thiên church originated in 1927 at Thiên Thai Tịnh (Mỹ Phước Tây Commune, Cai Lậy District, former Tiền Giang Province) through the spirit-writing séances and meditative practice of founding elders Phan Văn Tòng (Chánh Công Minh Tiên) and Nguyễn Bửu Tài (Pope Thiện Pháp).
  • 1936 - 1937Châu Minh Đàn among the Seventy-Two Sanctuaries
In Sóc Sải, Tiên Thủy Commune (former Hàm Long District, Kiến Hòa Province), Châu Minh Đàn was recorded among the seventy-two representative sanctuaries (Thất Thập Nhị Tịnh) of the Tiên Thiên lineage named in the Bính Tý year (1936), where spirit-writing séances transmitted the scriptures Đạo Đức Lược Luận (seventh lunar month of 1936) and Cửa Phật Nhà Tiên (first lunar month of 1937).
  • 1939 - 1955Relocation and commencement of the Châu Minh Holy See
In 1939, when Elder Brother Phan Văn Tòng ascended the papal throne, the Holy See moved temporarily to Cửu Khúc Tòa Sanctuary in Vĩnh Long before French colonial authorities arrested Phan Văn Tòng and senior dignitaries in 1940 and exiled them to Côn Đảo. On the 13th day of the eighth lunar month of the Ất Mùi year (September 28, 1955), the church used the grounds of Châu Minh Đàn in Tiên Thủy to begin building Diêu Trì Bửu Điện and the Châu Minh Holy See Mother Temple across a 113,000-square-meter estate.
  • 1956 - 1958Inauguration of the Mother Temple and First Vạn Linh Assembly
According to the historical chronicle of Thiên Thai Sanctuary and several general surveys of Caodai Holy Sees, the Châu Minh Holy See was completed and inaugurated in the Bính Thân year (1956). Meanwhile, the Mother Temple chronicle on the Tuổi Trẻ Đại Đạo forum records the inauguration ceremony on the 9th day of the first lunar month of the Mậu Tuất year (1958), coinciding with the First Vạn Linh Assembly and the enthronement of Pope Thiện Pháp (Nguyễn Bửu Tài) and Hộ Pháp Huệ Đức.
  • 2016Inauguration of the newly rebuilt Three Palaces sanctuary
Following a major reconstruction campaign, on the 19th day of the second lunar month of the Bính Thân year (March 27, 2016), the Cao Đài Tiên Thiên church solemnly celebrated the Grand Inauguration of the Three Palaces (Tam Đài) Great Temple of the Châu Minh Holy See.
According to the historical record

Within the diverse landscape of Caodai churches in the Mekong Delta, the Cao Đài Tiên Thiên church holds a distinctive identity through its emphasis on esoteric contemplative cultivation (vô vi tâm pháp) alongside public missionary work. The two founding elders who laid the cornerstone of the lineage were Phan Văn Tòng (1881 - 1945, a native of Tam Bình, Vĩnh Long) and Nguyễn Bửu Tài (1881 - 1958, a native of Tân Hào, Giồng Trôm, former Bến Tre, who graduated from the Gia Định Normal School and served as an educator before resigning to pursue the Way).

During the 1930s, the Tiên Thiên branch developed a network of seventy-two sanctuaries across southern Vietnam, taking Thiên Thai Tịnh in Láng Biển as its early center before relocating temporarily to Cửu Khúc Tòa in 1939. In early 1940, French colonial authorities suppressed the movement and exiled Elder Brother Phan Văn Tòng and numerous dignitaries to Côn Đảo Prison, where he passed away in 1945. In 1955, under the leadership of Pope Thiện Pháp Nguyễn Bửu Tài, the Châu Minh Đàn sanctuary in Sóc Sải, Tiên Thủy was chosen as the foundation for constructing the central Châu Minh Holy See.

Through decades of tropical weather in the Mekong riverlands, the Three Palaces sanctuary and surrounding halls of the Mother Temple, including Diêu Trì Bửu Điện, Tòa Nội Chính, Hộ Pháp Đường, Giáo Tông Đường, and Báo Ân Từ, have been continually cared for and restored by successive generations of Tiên Thiên dignitaries and adherents, culminating in the March 2016 inauguration of the rebuilt Three Palaces sanctuary.

IIIArchitecture and layout

According to the tradition

The Great Temple of the Châu Minh Holy See (covering a floor area of roughly 481.8 square meters) is built on the Three Palaces (Tam Đài) plan comprising Hiệp Thiên Đài at the front, Cửu Trùng Đài in the middle, and Bát Quái Đài at the rear. At the front facade, Hiệp Thiên Đài rises in three peaks, with two pointed side towers reaching 18 meters high, named Kiểng Dương Đài on the east (representing the Sun and the principle of Law) and Lôi Âm Đài on the west (representing the Moon and the principle of Dharma), while the lower central roof is named Thông Thiên Đài (representing Teaching) and bears the emblems of the Three Teachings, namely the Alms Bowl, the Fly-Whisk, and the Spring and Autumn Annals.

The most distinctive visual emblem on the Hiệp Thiên Đài facade of the Châu Minh Holy See is a raised relief of a green dragon curving in the S-shape of Vietnam, its mouth projecting five pearls painted yellow, blue, red, white, and black. This green dragon projecting five pearls expresses the Tiên Thiên lineage's aspiration for world peace and universal brotherhood radiating from Vietnam across the five continents.

The two 18-meter pointed side towers are Kiểng Dương Đài (east, upholding Law) and Lôi Âm Đài (west, upholding Dharma), flanking the central Thông Thiên Đài crowned with the emblems of the Three Teachings and the Divine Eye.

Triangular Pond and Banner Pole

Beyond the Main Gate and Châu Môn Bridge stand the Tablet of Universal Love (Bảng Sự Thương Yêu), the Triangular Pond (Tam Giác Hồ) with Three-Peak Rock, the Sun and Moon Ponds on either side, and a 28-meter Banner Pole flying a 24-meter banner.

Diêu Trì Bửu Điện and Kim Thủy Trì

Built first in 1955 (20 meters wide by 24 meters long) with the twin towers of Châu Nhựt Lầu and Minh Nguyệt Lầu, fronted by the Kim Thủy Trì pond where 15 mythical Ngao Trụ creatures support the six peaks of Mount Sumeru (Tu Di Sơn). Inside, Đức Diêu Trì Kim Mẫu is venerated in non-anthropomorphic (vô vi) form through a circular mirror glass with a radius of 72 centimeters.

IVContemplative practice and ritual life

At the Châu Minh Holy See, daily liturgical worship follows the four canonical hours of Tý, Ngọ, Mẹo, and Dậu, with solemn chanting echoing alongside bells and drums across the quiet countryside of Tiên Thủy. The ceremonial attire and ritual deportment of Tiên Thiên dignitaries and adherents preserve a simple, dignified order governed by the rules of the Holy See.

Alongside public exoteric services in the Great Temple and Diêu Trì Bửu Điện, the Châu Minh Holy See maintains a strong tradition of esoteric meditative retreats for initiates entering contemplative ranks. Balancing ethical duties in family and civic life with quiet inward cultivation during retreat terms remains a cherished hallmark across generations of adherents here.

?Quick Questions

Which Caodai church has its central headquarters at the Châu Minh Holy See

The Châu Minh Holy See is the Mother Temple and Central Ecclesiastical Headquarters of the Cao Đài Tiên Thiên church, one of the major Caodai branches in southern Vietnam, formed in 1927 and closely associated with founding elders Phan Văn Tòng and Nguyễn Bửu Tài.

When was the Châu Minh Holy See built

Its predecessor was the Châu Minh Đàn sanctuary, active since the 1930s (where canonical scriptures were received in 1936 and 1937). On the 13th day of the eighth lunar month of the Ất Mùi year (September 28, 1955), the church began building the Châu Minh Holy See Mother Temple on the Châu Minh Đàn site, completing its inauguration in 1956 (or on the 9th day of the first lunar month of the Mậu Tuất year, 1958, according to internal chronicles), and on March 27, 2016 it inaugurated the newly rebuilt Three Palaces (Tam Đài) Great Temple.

What is special about the green dragon on the front facade of the Châu Minh Holy See

At the center of the lower frieze on the Hiệp Thiên Đài front facade is a raised relief of a green dragon curving in the S-shape of the map of Vietnam, projecting five pearls painted yellow, blue, red, white, and black, symbolizing the Five Elements and the aspiration for peace across all five continents.

How is the Mother Goddess venerated inside Diêu Trì Bửu Điện at the Châu Minh Holy See

Unlike temples that enshrine anthropomorphic statues, Diêu Trì Bửu Điện at the Châu Minh Holy See venerates Đức Diêu Trì Kim Mẫu in non-figurative (vô vi) form through a circular mirror glass with a radius of 72 centimeters set atop a central throne above nine stepped tiers displaying only flowers, fruit, and pure water, symbolizing the principle of the Boundless (Vô Cực) giving rise to the Supreme Ultimate (Thái Cực).

What is the current administrative address of the Châu Minh Holy See

Following the 2025 administrative reorganization, the Châu Minh Holy See is located in Ấp Chánh Hamlet, Tiên Thủy Commune, Vĩnh Long Province (prior to 2025 it belonged to Tiên Thủy Town, Châu Thành District, Bến Tre Province, and before 1975 it was known as the Sóc Sải area of Hàm Long District, Kiến Hòa Province).
