Baptists: Believer's Baptism, Autonomous Congregations and Two Recognised Bodies in Vietnam

IOverview

The second marker is church order. For Baptists each local congregation is fully self-governing. It calls its own pastor and decides its own finances and discipline. Conventions and unions are voluntary associations. As a result the Baptist family contains hundreds of unrelated bodies, some very conservative, some quite liberal.

IIHistory

The first Baptists were English Separatists who had fled to the Netherlands. In Amsterdam in 1609 John Smyth baptised himself and then his group, convinced that infant baptism was invalid. In 1612 Thomas Helwys led part of the group back to London, founded the first Baptist church on English soil and wrote one of the earliest pleas for religious liberty in English.

Immersion only became the common standard around 1640. In America Roger Williams founded the first Baptist church in Providence in 1638. In the 19th century Baptist missionaries spread worldwide, Adoniram Judson in Burma being the best known.

IIIBeliefs and Distinctives

On the Trinity, the authority of Scripture and salvation by grace through faith, Baptists stand with the rest of Protestantism. Their distinctives are usually gathered under the heading of Baptist principles.

Baptists see baptism and the Lord's Supper as ordinances to obey and remember, not as channels of grace. Two old theological streams run through the family: General Baptists, who hold that Christ died for all, and Particular Baptists, who are closer to Calvinism.

IVWorship, Rites and Daily Life

Baptist churches usually have a baptistery behind the pulpit. Baptism takes place before the congregation: the believer gives a testimony and the pastor lowers them into the water. Many churches also baptise in rivers, lakes or the sea.

Sunday worship centres on an expository sermon, with hymns and prayer. Major decisions, such as calling a pastor, buying land or receiving members, go to a vote at a members' meeting.

VOrganisation and Distribution

According to the Baptist World Alliance, its member bodies had 53,871,526 baptised members in 2025. The Alliance estimates this is about half of all Baptists, since several large conventions stay outside. The Southern Baptist Convention in the United States, the biggest of all, withdrew from the Alliance in 2004.

Because Baptists count only baptised believers, their figures run lower than those of churches that count children.

VIIn Vietnam

According to the history published by the Vietnam Baptist Church, missionary Herman Hayes and his wife, sent by the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board, arrived in 1959, ran English classes, distributed literature and opened a theological school. Grace Baptist Church was founded in Saigon in 1962. After 1975 most facilities ceased operating. Today two Baptist bodies are recognised by the state, working side by side and independent of each other.

Both bodies trace their roots to the Southern Baptist mission of 1959. According to VietnamPlus on 27 December 2023, the Vietnam Baptist Convention, then with over 7,000 members, was approved to open the Vietnam Baptist Theological Institute, the third Protestant training institution operating in the country.
