IOverview
Tien Thien is one of the most distinctive Cao Dai branches. Its places of worship are not called thánh thất but thánh tịnh, and its altars carry tablets that other churches do not place.
Its charter name is Tiên Thiên Đại Đạo Tam Kỳ Phổ Độ, the Cao Dai Tien Thien Church. Its seat is the Chau Minh Holy See in Tien Thuy commune, Chau Thanh district, former Ben Tre province, now part of Vinh Long. In 1995 Tien Thien became the first Cao Dai church to be granted legal status by the state.
IIHistory
According to a series on the history of Tien Thien published by Nhip Cau Tam Giao, its three main leaders were Phan Van Tong (1881 to 1945), Nguyen Huu Chinh (1890 to 1946) and Le Kim Ty (1893 to 1948).
Séance groups were already active across Cochinchina in the early 1920s. After Cao Dai was opened in 1926, more than ten of them had united under the Tien Thien name by 1928. An important early site was the Lu Bong Dao Duc shrine in My Phuoc Tay commune, Cai Lay, My Tho, founded by Nguyen Thi Tu. The leadership took shape in 1933, and by 1955 religious life had settled into its present form.
The Chau Minh Holy See was begun in 1937 and completed in 1956, according to Nhip Cau Giao Ly.

IIITeachings and Distinctive Features
The church's charter for 2020 to 2025, published on the Government Committee for Religious Affairs site, states its aim as returning the Three Teachings to their source and uniting the Five Branches: Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism, and the five stages of the human, spirit, saint, immortal and Buddha.
The first distinctive feature is the name of its temples. According to Nhip Cau Tam Giao, unlike other Cao Dai branches, Tien Thien took existing séance halls as its places of worship and called them thánh tịnh rather than thánh thất.
The second is the altar. Under the charter, the Bát Quái đài of a temple holds a cosmic globe 1.2 metres across bearing the Divine Eye. The church also honours eight tablets, covering the Three Teachings, the Three Guardians, Jesus Christ and Jiang Taigong.
The Divine Eye here is still the left eye, on the globe or in a circle, never in a triangle, as throughout Cao Dai.
IVPractice, Ritual and Daily Life
Tien Thien's ritual year is tied closely to its governance. Under the charter:
- Lunar New Year on the first day of the first month.
- The first seasonal festival on the 14th and 15th of the first month, with the meeting of the Upper Council.
- The middle seasonal festival on the 14th and 15th of the seventh month, with the assembly of believers.
- The last seasonal festival on the 14th and 15th of the tenth month, with the annual church conference.
Vestments come in formal and everyday forms. An overview on Nghien cuu lich su notes that the branch is known for white dress. The Cao Dai Tien Thien Institute runs basic, intermediate and advanced courses, compiles scriptures and holds monthly teaching sessions.
VOrganization and Distribution
The church has two levels. The central level includes the Upper Council, the Church Council, the Hiệp Thiên đài and two groups of departments. Local congregations form the base. The charter sets the men's ranks at one Pope, three Chưởng pháp, three Đầu sư and 36 Phối sư, and the women's at one Đầu sư and 12 Phối sư.
The seventh assembly of representatives met on 5 September 2025 at the Chau Minh Holy See with more than 490 delegates from 133 congregations. The new head is Chánh Phối Sư Thượng Phong Thanh, lay name Huynh Thanh Phong. The church reported spending over 97 billion dong on charity in the previous term.

A 2024 study in the Vietnam Social Sciences journal lists the founding of the Cao Dai Tien Thien Institute among the joint achievements of the liaison.
Its centre remains the Chau Minh Holy See, now in Vinh Long province. Followers are concentrated in former Ben Tre, former Tien Giang and the Mekong Delta.
